American University in Cairo admission at a glance

The American University in Cairo takes undergraduate applications online only, with an early round that closes on 1 Feb and a regular round that closes on 1 Jun for Fall 2027, and must provide evidence of academic English proficiency applies to every new undergraduate. Your certificate sets the minimum grade that gets you into the selection process, and having the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee you a place.

This report covers entry in autumn 2027, which AUC calls the Fall 2027 term, for applicants who hold certificates from outside Egypt: the IB diploma, GCE A-levels with IGCSE or GCSE, the American high school diploma with AP and SAT or ACT, the French Baccalaureate, the German Abitur and Canadian provincial diplomas. The Egyptian Thanawiya Amma and the national certificates of other Arab countries are included because AUC sets them out on the same pages. Everything below comes from AUC's own admissions pages, and each rule, number and date links to the sentence it comes from.

Two points shape the whole application. First, the published minimums are a gate, not the level of the students who get in: Acceptance is based on the availability of places, and the minimum cut-off scores for each certificate may change from one semester to another. Second, English is tested for everyone: The University does not exempt applicants from this requirement solely on the basis of citizenship or graduation from an English-medium secondary school.

The university describes its newest intake in public numbers. For the current academic year AUC reports that its acceptance rate for this academic year was 41% and that the yield, which measures the number of enrolled students compared to those who were admitted, is 67% (2026/27, the latest published). Treat the first figure as a sign of how selective the university has become, not as your personal chance: it mixes Egyptian and international applicants and every certificate.

The programme chapters cover five undergraduate majors for which AUC publishes certificate-by-certificate rules or a selection method: Computer Science, Computer Engineering (as the engineering group), Data Science, Economics and Business and Entrepreneurship. The choice follows the two admission-requirements pages that AUC builds for foreign and local certificates alike, one for sciences and engineering and one for business.

  • Deadlines: 1 Nov for Spring 2027, 1 Feb for Fall 2027 early admission, 1 Jun for Fall 2027 regular admission.
  • English: TOEFL, Academic IELTS or Duolingo, no more than two years before the semester starts.
  • Business majors: Effective Fall 2027, selection by grades, an aptitude test and an interview.
  • Cost: $735 per credit hour for undergraduate international students (2026/27, the latest published).

How AUC undergraduate admission works for applicants from abroad

You apply online and upload every document through the portal: Application is available online only, and Upload all required documents through the online portal, as they are not considered via email. Fall admission runs in two cycles (provisional/ early and final).

AUC offers undergraduate degree admission for the fall and spring semesters only. The fall intake is the one most readers from abroad use, and it has an early or provisional stage in the spring and a final stage once your school results are out. The page puts it this way: The admission for the fall takes place on two cycles (provisional/ early and final), while the admission for the spring takes place on one cycle.

Application steps and documents

An application that misses documents stays pending. The university says your application and final decision depend on all documents arriving by the set deadlines, so build the file from the checklist on the application portal before the early round.

Provisional and final admission

AUC considers the most academically qualified applicants for provisional admission during the spring for the following fall semester if they earned excellent grades or submitted documents of the below requirements prior to the set deadline. A provisional acceptance carries a payment duty: those admitted will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit, which the acceptance letter announces and which is deducted from tuition at the final stage.

The provisional offer depends on your final results. If your final academic results are not comparable to those on which the provisional acceptance was based, your admission offer will be withdrawn. IB, Abitur and French Baccalaureate applicants therefore send predicted grades first and the final results later.

Declaring a major at admission

Not every major is chosen at the gate. Upon fulfilling admission/major requirements and meeting the cut-off scores, only applicants for engineering and science programs can be declared at the admission stage (after submitting final grades). Non-science applicants declare after enrolling. From Fall 2027 the business majors join the declare-at-admission group with their own competitive selection, covered in the business chapter.

If your certificate is not on AUC's list, email the Office of Enrollment, Admissions and Student Service Center before submitting the admission application form. Transfer students are a separate route: The applicant's GPA should not be less than 2.0 on a scale of 4.0 for admission consideration, and this report does not cover it further.

AUC application deadlines for Fall 2027 and Spring 2027

AUC lists three application dates on its undergraduate requirements page: 1 Nov for Spring 2027, 1 Feb for Fall 2027 early admission and 1 Jun for Fall 2027 regular admission. For entry in autumn 2027 the two dates that matter are the early and the regular round.

The page prints day and month beside each term name and no year, so read the Spring 2027 date as the cut-off for the spring term. The Fall 2027 rounds are named with their year, which is why the page counts as 2027/28 proof for the dates below.

The early round is the route to a provisional decision: AUC considers the most academically qualified applicants for provisional admission during the spring for the following fall semester, so a file that is complete by the early deadline has the best chance of an early answer.

Late files are not rejected outright: Applications submitted after the set deadlines will be considered according to the availability of places. For science and engineering this has a cost, because places in those programmes are limited and a late file lowers the chance of being declared into them at the admission stage.

Deadlines for improved English scores

An improved English placement score has its own cut-off. For the spring term it is The last working day before the semester start date, at 4 pm Cairo Local Time. For Fall 2027 the page says the score must arrive wo weeks before the start of the semester, and it points to the academic calendar for exact dates.

Plan the English test so that a retake still fits: with test results valid for no more than two years before the first day of the term, a score taken in spring 2026 is still usable for Fall 2027.

Which school certificates AUC accepts and the grade it asks for

AUC sets requirements by certificate: In addition to the general requirements, you need to fulfill the requirements of your secondary school certificate. The page names the American diploma, Canadian diplomas, the French Baccalaureate, IGCSE, GCSE and GCE, the German Abitur, the IB, Arab national certificates and the Thanawiya Amma.

The table gives the headline entry rule for each certificate as AUC states it on its secondary school certificates page. These are the minimums for admission consideration. Having the minimum academic requirements does not guarantee admission to the University but rather ensures entry to the selection process.

Headline rule by certificateFall 2027 entry
CertificateWhat AUC states
IB diplomaConsidered for admission provided that they have completed their diploma requirements and meet the semester's admission scores
GCE A-level, AS, IGCSE, GCSEEvaluated based on the best eight subjects
American high school diplomaCumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a scale of 4.0 plus SAT or ACT
French BaccalaureateAcademic average of at least 10
German AbiturAcademic average of four or better
Canadian Dogwood DiplomaAverage of at least 75 percent
Thanawiya Amma, EgyptScore of at least 70 percent
National certificate, Arab countriesScore of at least 75 percent
Source: AUC admissions pages

Read the table as an entry gate. The university states that The minimum cut-off scores for each certificate may change from one semester to another according to University requirements, so a grade that qualified in one cycle is not a promise for the next. The programme chapters add subject and grade rules for sciences, engineering and data science that are stricter than these headline numbers.

For a certificate outside the list, email the Office of Enrollment, Admissions and Student Service Center before submitting the admission application form. The next chapters take the certificates one by one, starting with the IB, then the British, American, Egyptian and Arab, French, German and Canadian routes.

International Baccalaureate at AUC: admission and credit

Holders of the International Baccalaureate (IB) diploma will be considered for admission provided that they have completed their diploma requirements and meet the admissions scores for the semester they are applying for. The IB numbers sit in the programme rules below.

The IB route has two features that differ from other certificates. First, your grades arrive after the early round, so the university asks for predicted grades. Predicted grades for the final year are mandatory for early admission and must be provided through the designated form, and the provisional route spells out that the form must be stamped by the school.

Second, the English proof must be in the file early. Since the IB grades are released during the summer, and in order to have a complete file for provisional admission consideration, applicants need to submit IELTS/TOEFL/Duolingo scores along with other required documents by the early admission deadline. Book the English test before the 1 Feb round, not after your final exams.

IB subject and grade rules by programme

Applicants whose IB profile does not fit a programme rule have a fallback in the general rule: Holders of IB certificates may be accepted, provided they successfully complete the AUC admissions requirements for the American high school diploma or British certificate.

IB credit after admission

AUC rewards a strong IB diploma with credit. The University grants up to a total of 30 transfer credits for the IB diploma for higher-level academic subjects with grades of 5 or more (out of 7). In addition, AUC also grants up to 15 credits general elective credits for the completion of the IB diploma with a minimum total point of 30. AUC does not grant transfer credits for subsidiary-level subjects.

The credit is a saving on the degree, not an admission condition. Check which of your higher-level subjects have an equivalent on the IB equivalency list that AUC links from its transfer-credit page, and ask the department before you count on a specific course.

GCE A-level, AS, IGCSE and GCSE at AUC

British-system applicants are scored on eight subjects: Applicants are evaluated based on the best eight subjects for admission consideration (including IGCSE/GCSE, GCE AS, and GCE A-level subjects). AUC accepts a minimum grade of C to satisfy the eight subject requirements at the IGCSE/GCSE or GCE advanced subsidiary level and a minimum grade of D at the GCE advanced level.

Submit every certificate you hold with your candidate number, because AUC computes eligibility from the eight highest scores. Two practical rules follow from the page. School transcripts and predicted grades are not recognized for admission consideration, and Only copies of the statement of results with an original stamp (from schools or the British Council) are considered for admission evaluation.

There is a preference in the selection: Preference is given to students who have completed GCE advanced or advanced subsidiary-level subjects and have excellent grades. The provisional-admission page repeats it and asks for a file with at least eight subjects.

Arabic and schooling-years proof

Native speakers of Arabic cannot use the language to fill the list: For Arab nationals (Native speakers of Arabic), AUC does not accept IGCSE/GCSE Arabic (as a second language) as one of the eight subjects. Applicants who studied in an international system also are required to submit a grade one final report in addition to year-by-year proof of enrollment (primary to secondary).

A-level rules for sciences, engineering and data

Credit for A-levels comes later: The University grants transfer credits for A-level subjects with grades of A or B.

American high school diploma, SAT, ACT and AP at AUC

The American diploma is judged on two things, your cumulative GPA and your SAT or ACT: AUC requires a minimum cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 (on a scale of 4.0) from an accredited school for admission consideration, and a combined total score of 950 for the SAT 1 or a composite score of 20 on the ACT.

Those are entry minimums. AUC adds that having the recommended SAT or ACT score does not guarantee acceptance, and that there is a preference for school length: Preference in admission will be given to students who have received an American high school diploma in 12 years of schooling.

If you spent a short time in an American school the test requirement grows: Students who spent less than one and a half years at an accredited American high school must submit ACT 2 in two different subjects of their choice, with a minimum score of 22 on each subject. The file for provisional admission needs the transcript and satisfactory SAT 1/ACT results.

SAT maths thresholds for science majors

Maths scores matter for the technical majors. The certificates page says Applicants interested in engineering programs, actuarial science, data science, and computer science majors are required to have a minimum SAT I-Math score of 560 or an ACT I-Math score of 22 to be considered for declaration at the admission stage. The Data Science page asks for more: A minimum SAT I-MATH score of 690 or ACT I-MATH score of 27, so a Data Science applicant should plan to the higher figure.

The engineering and Computer Science pages add a GPA floor: A minimum SAT I-MATH score of 560 or ACT I MATH score of 22 and a minimum overall GPA of 3.0 are also required. The SAT does not replace the English test: No English exemption will be granted based on the SAT1 English components.

AP exams

AP does not appear on these pages as an entry route. It appears as credit after admission: The University grants transfer credits for academic subjects with scores of 4 or 5 (out of 5). Take AP exams to shorten the degree, and keep the SAT or ACT in your plan for the admission decision.

Thanawiya Amma and Arab national certificates at AUC

Thanawiya Amma/STEM/Thanawiya Azhariya A score of at least 70 percent is required for admission consideration, and for Arab national certificates A score of at least 75 percent is required for admission consideration.

These two minimums come from AUC's secondary school certificates page and belong to the general admission gate, not to a major. The evaluation is based on the overall score/percentage stated on the official certificate. For the provisional round, Thanawiya Amma applicants from the arts, mathematics or science sections need a complete file including the English proficiency exam results.

Readers from the Gulf and North Africa should check how their certificate is named. AUC groups them under the national certificate or Tawjihi of Arab countries; if yours is not covered, the rule for unlisted certificates applies and you write to the admissions office before applying.

Programme rules for the Thanawiya Amma

The pattern is that the national certificate opens the door and the total average ranks the applicants for the engineering and computer science places, which is why the page speaks of ranking, not only of a minimum.

French Baccalaureate, German Abitur and Canadian diplomas at AUC

For the French Baccalaureate, Applicants with a minimum academic average of 10 (passable) will be considered for admission. For the German Abitur, Applicants with a minimum academic average of four will be considered for admission.

Both European certificates share a process rule with the IB: Predicted grades for the final year are mandatory for early admission and must be provided through the designated form, stamped by the school. The Abitur page carries the same condition.

Programme rules for Bac and Abitur

The Abitur appears with two different numbers on AUC's pages: the general gate is an average of four, while the subject rules and the credit rule use points out of 15. Check which one a rule means before you compare it with your own result. Credit works like this: The University grants up to 30 transfer credits for academic subjects with scores of 10 or more (out of 15), and The University grants up to 30 transfer credits for academic subjects with advanced-level scores of 14 or more (out of 20) for the Baccalaureate.

Canadian diplomas

Canadian provincial diplomas have a common average and a subject count. For the Dogwood Diploma, A minimum average of 75 percent is required for admission consideration, and Manitoba and Ontario use the same average. Ontario applicants need a total of four university-level subjects (U or M) completed in grade 12, calculated within the average at the early stage.

Computer Science asks Canadian applicants for a minimum score of 80% (overall and science subjects), a higher bar than the general average.

Other secondary certificates and how to apply with them

AUC names a further group of certificates, including the Australian, Nova Scotia, Greek, Lebanese and West and East African secondary certificates, and sends their holders to the admissions office: If you hold any of the above certificates or others, contact the University at enrolauc@aucegypt.edu for information.

The page lists these under other recognised secondary school certificates and gives no grade table for them. A Greek, Lebanese or Australian applicant should write to the admissions office with the certificate name, the year of graduation and the subjects before applying.

Applicants from countries that appear nowhere on the list face the same rule: email the Office of Enrollment, Admissions and Student Service Center before submitting the admission application form. The page names no national certificate from Italy, Poland, Romania, Spain, the Netherlands, Turkey, Brazil, Indonesia, Japan or Vietnam, so applicants with those certificates write first, unless they also hold an IB diploma or British qualifications.

The IB diploma is a practical alternative for such applicants, and the university leaves a way in: Holders of IB certificates may be accepted, provided they successfully complete the AUC admissions requirements for the American high school diploma or British certificate. Whatever certificate you use, the English test is separate and required.

Mathematics and science requirements by programme

The subject rules sit on AUC's sciences and engineering page: every major asks for mathematics, and the technical ones add physics, chemistry or a second science. The table shows the threshold for three majors and three certificates.

AUC introduces these as the page's own opening statement says: they are the minimum requirements to apply, and Acceptance is based on the availability of places. The numbers below are therefore the floor for being considered, not the profile of admitted students.

Data Science carries the highest maths bar in the table, in line with its pairing with Actuarial Science and Mathematics on the page, which share the same rules. The Data Science rows for the French Baccalaureate and the Egyptian certificate repeat the 70% average and the 80% maths-section score discussed earlier.

Biology and Chemistry have their own entry lines on the same page; this report does not cover them. For all of these majors the practical advice is the same: choose subjects in the final two school years with the programme rule in mind, because a missing physics or chemistry course cannot be added after the early round.

English language requirements at AUC

All new undergraduate students applying as degree and non-degree students must provide evidence of academic English proficiency with the admission application, and English placement depends on your International TOEFL, Academic IELTS or Duolingo test scores.

There is no exemption by passport or by school. The University does not exempt applicants from this requirement solely on the basis of citizenship or graduation from an English-medium secondary school, and for American-diploma holders No English exemption will be granted based on the SAT1 English components. AUC does not offer exemption exams of any kind.

Test rules

Placement into intensive English

Your score does not only pass or fail you, it places you. The Intensive English Courses for Undergraduates include ELIN 0101 (Intermediate English) and ELIN 0102 (Advanced English), and Students are placed in one of the two levels according to their scores on IELTS, TOEFL iBT or the Duolingo English Test. Students in those courses take five hours of classes a day.

The placement score table is a separate AUC document linked from the requirements page. Download it before choosing a test, because it shows which score avoids the intensive courses. If you think the placement is too low, you may retake the test and send the better score: for spring this is The last working day before the semester start date, at 4 pm Cairo Local Time, and for Fall 2027 wo weeks before the start of the semester.

Computer Science at AUC: admission rules by certificate

Computer Science asks for mathematics and physics plus a third science or computer course, with grade floors that differ by certificate: for the IB, A minimum grade of 4 in mathematics and an average of 4 in the three courses are also required.

Computer Science sits in the sciences and engineering group, so it is one of the majors that can be declared at the admission stage once the final grades are in and the cut-off scores are met. Places are limited, which is why the university stresses early documents.

Egyptian applicants need a science or mathematics section certificate, and the engineering and computer science places are ranked by the total average score: Ranking of those who qualify is done according to the total average score. For Arab-country certificates the rule is Completion of mathematics and physics courses, plus another science course, is required to qualify for admission.

After the programme rule, the general file still applies: the English proof, two recommendation letters and the application by the 1 Feb or 1 Jun deadline. A strong profile for Computer Science therefore combines high maths and physics marks with an early file.

Engineering at AUC: Computer Engineering and the engineering group

If an engineering program is your intended major, make sure to write it down in the appropriate field on your application form (intended major). The majors are Architecture, Computer Engineering, Construction Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Petroleum Engineering.

The six engineering majors share one set of entry rules, so Computer Engineering, the programme this report follows, is covered together with the others. The core is mathematics, physics and chemistry, with a grade floor in maths.

Egyptian applicants must come from the mathematics section: Students must be graduates of the thanawiya amma mathematics section to qualify for admission. Arab-country applicants need maths, physics and chemistry, and The ranking of those who qualify is done according to the total average score.

Architecture placement test

Architecture adds one step the other engineering majors lack: Students intending to major in Architecture have to sit a placement exam/workshop addressing their cognitive abilities. The page describes what is tested as spatial visualisation and abstract reasoning. Write Architecture as the intended major on the application form, as the page instructs for every engineering major.

Data Science at AUC: the strictest maths rules

Data Science carries the highest maths threshold of the three technical groups in this report. For the IB the rule reads high-level math with a minimum score of 4 OR standard-level math with a minimum score of 5, and for American-diploma holders A minimum SAT I-MATH score of 690 or ACT I-MATH score of 27.

AUC prints one rule block for Actuarial Science, Data Science and Mathematics, and the three majors share the thresholds. The IB route needs one other science course taken in grades 10, 11 or 12 and An average score of 4 across both subjects.

The American-diploma bar is the one that surprises candidates. The general certificates page asks for an SAT maths score of 560 to be considered for declaration in data science, while the Data Science rule block asks for 690 on the SAT or 27 on the ACT. Plan to the higher figure.

The rest of the file is the same as in every other major: English proof, two recommendation letters, the personal statement and the deadline of 1 Jun for the regular Fall 2027 round.

Economics and Business and Entrepreneurship at AUC

The Onsi Sawiris School of Business lists six undergraduate majors on its admission requirements page: Accounting (BAC) Economics (BA) Management of Information and Communication Technology (MICT) Business and Entrepreneurship (BBE) Business in Finance (BBF) Business in Marketing (BBM). Effective Fall 2027, qualified students who have fulfilled AUC's admission requirements may apply to declare their major at the time of admission.

This is a change for business applicants. Before, only science and engineering applicants were declared at the gate; from Fall 2027 a qualified business applicant can ask to enter the major on admission. The condition is a competitive selection: Selection is competitive and will be based on an evaluation of: High school grades Focus Aptitude Test score (ASSESS or ITB Business) Interview.

Economics and Business and Entrepreneurship follow the same selection method as the other four business majors. The page lists no certificate-by-certificate grade table for them. The university adds that business and science applicants may be considered for major declaration provided that they meet the general undergraduate admission requirements in addition to any program-specific criteria.

What to prepare

  • Grades: your certificate result, held to the minimum for your certificate.
  • An aptitude test: Focus Aptitude Test score (ASSESS or ITB Business).
  • An interview: the page lists Interview as the third part of the selection.
  • The general file: English proof, recommendation letters, personal statement and the deadline.

The page gives no cut-off for the aptitude test and no interview date, so ask the admissions office for the booking details when you apply.

Tests, interviews and portfolios at AUC

AUC has no single entrance exam for every applicant. The tests that appear are tied to your certificate or to the major: the SAT or ACT for the American diploma, a placement exam for Architecture and an aptitude test with an interview for the business majors.

For American-diploma holders: a combined total score of 950 for the SAT 1 or a composite score of 20 on the ACT is the minimum, and ACT 2 in two different subjects of their choice applies after a short stay at an American school.

For business majors the test is named in the selection: Focus Aptitude Test score (ASSESS or ITB Business), followed by Interview. Business and Entrepreneurship uses the same two parts, listed in the selection sentence of the business page.

For Architecture: The test examines spatial visualization and abstract reasoning. It is a placement exam or workshop, not an entrance exam for the whole university.

English tests, covered in their own chapter, are required for every applicant. For IB, A-level, Abitur and Baccalaureate holders the pages describe grades and subject courses as the evaluation, and the programme chapters give the thresholds.

AUC tuition and costs for international undergraduates

AUC charges undergraduate international students $735 per credit hour, against $700 for Egyptian students, and International students must pay tuition and fees in US dollars (2026/27, the latest published).

The tuition page is dated July 2026 and does not name an academic year, so treat the rate as the latest published and confirm it when you receive your offer. Tuition is charged per credit hour, so the annual bill depends on the number of credits you take.

Published costs for undergraduates
Tuition per credit hour, international undergraduates$735
Estimated cost of attendance, US students, 2025-2026 (the financial-aid budget)$36,558
Double room per person per semester, Fall 2026 and Spring 2027$1,000
Sources: AUC tuition page, cost of attendance page, residences rates page.

The cost-of-attendance page gives an estimate for a different purpose. It exists for US federal loans, and Undergraduate students are budgeted for 12 credit hours each fall and spring semester. Its 2025-2026 table lists tuition of $17,640, fees of $474 and a total budget of $36,558 for US students. The page says it is an estimate of the student's educational expenses for the academic year.

Do not add these numbers to the per-credit rate: the table is a federal-loan budget for US citizens, it includes living costs, and it is from the previous year. Use the per-credit rate for tuition and the budget as a rough guide to the total.

AUC scholarships and admission statistics

The Excellence Scholarship Program is the main merit route: may provide tuition coverage from 20% to 100% in total, for the very best students eligible in the various categories. There is a category for international applicants: Coverage up to 30% for outstanding students from across the globe (2026/27, the latest published).

AUC describes the international category as part of a wide student body: AUC is home to a diverse student population that hails from more than 60 countries. Certificate scores are a factor in selecting recipients.

The newest intake shows how competitive the scholarships are. was awarded to 362 incoming students. Of these, 130 students received 100% tuition coverage (2026/27, the latest published), and the university adds that it provides financial support to approximately 40% of students on campus.

Admission statistics

These are institution-wide numbers from the university's news release of September 2026. They do not split by certificate, so an IB or A-level applicant cannot read a certificate-specific chance from them. What they do show is direction: more applications, more selectivity and a growing international group.

Apply early, put the English test and the predicted grades in the first file, and ask the admissions office about the certificate if yours is not listed. Those three steps matter more than any single figure on the page.

AUC: frequently asked questions

What is the AUC application deadline for Fall 2027?

AUC lists 1 Feb for Fall 2027 early admission and 1 Jun for regular admission. The early round gives a provisional decision; Applications submitted after the set deadlines will be considered according to the availability of places.

1 Junregular Fall 2027 deadline
