Linköping University admission at a glance
Linköping University (LiU) teaches one bachelor's programme in English, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine, and for autumn 2027 entry you apply to it through universityadmissions.se in the first admissions round, which opened on 16 October 2026 and closes on 15 January 2027. Every other LiU bachelor's programme is taught in Swedish.
Linköping University lists the Bachelor's Programme in Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine for Autumn 2027 in the international admissions round, with the application period 16 Oct - 15 Jan and the application code LIU-51300. University Admissions in Sweden describes the first admissions round as specifically for international students. The five facts below are the ones an applicant from abroad needs first.
The tuition figure of SEK 607,000 on the Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine page carries no per-year label, and the page says it applies only to students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. The fees chapter sets out what that figure covers and how Linköping University collects it.
Rules that catch applicants out
- Final-year school-leavers: University Admissions suggests that if you are in your final year, you don't apply for admission to the first round for autumn semester, because selection takes place before you have final grades.
- IB students: applicants who will be awarded an IB Diploma in May 2027 are told not to apply to the first admissions round. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens can apply for courses and programmes in the second round, where selection is in July.
- Swedish: every Linköping University bachelor's programme taught in Swedish requires skills in Swedish, both written and oral, at the pass level of Swedish upper secondary school.
- Fee and documents: on the University Admissions autumn-dates page (as of October 2026) the application fee, proof of fee exemption and supporting documents are all due by 1 February.
Does Linköping University name the autumn 2027 intake?
Yes, in part. The Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine page has a block headed Autumn 2027 / Full-time / Linköping, and the degree-studies page says the autumn semester starts in August 2027. The University Admissions IB page names Autumn semester 2027 (first admissions round). The University Admissions autumn-dates page gives its dates without naming a cycle, so they are the page as of October 2026. The Medical Programme page lists only Autumn 2026 and Spring 2027 intakes.

Linköping University rankings, history and key figures
Linköping University's figures page reports 46,200 students and 4,700 employees, figures that are generally based on Linköping University's Annual Report for 2024. The ranking positions below are Linköping University's own statements, not figures from the publishers.
Linköping University keeps a rankings page that lists its place in three global tables. That page says LiU's place in the QS World University Rankings 2027 is 308, in the THE World University Rankings 2026 it is 201-250, and in the Academic Ranking of World Universities 2025 it is 301-400. These are the university's figures; check each publisher's own table before you rely on a position.
For subjects, the same Linköping University page states a place of 84 for Materials Science in the QS subject rankings 2027. For ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects 2025, the page lists Sociology at 51-75 and Materials Science and Engineering, Nursing and Telecommunication Engineering each at 76-100. None of these subjects is the field of the English-taught bachelor, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine.
Teaching history: problem-based learning
Teaching style is part of the Linköping University story. Linköping University states that its Medical Programme was the first in Sweden to establish problem-based learning (PBL); the medicine chapter covers that programme.
Linköping University in figures
| Measure | Figure |
|---|---|
| Students | 46,200 (full-time equivalents 19,896) |
| International students | 2,075 |
| Study programmes | 147, of which 31 international programmes in English |
| Employees | 4,700 (full-time equivalents 4,088) |
| Professors | 349 |
| PhD students | 1,300 |
Linköping University's pages do not agree on the number of international programmes. The figures page counts 31 international programmes in English, while the degree-studies page says LiU offers 30 international programmes. Both counts are almost entirely master's programmes: at bachelor's level, Linköping University offers one international programme taught in English.
LiU campuses: Valla, Norrköping, University Hospital and Lidingö
Linköping University's three main campuses are in the cities of Linköping and Norrköping in Östergötland, East Sweden: Campus Valla, the University Hospital Campus and Campus Norrköping. The English-taught bachelor, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine, lists Linköping as its place of study.
Linköping University also runs Campus Lidingö, where instruction is in Swedish. For an applicant to the English-taught bachelor, life at Linköping University means Linköping, the programme's place of study.
Campus Valla, Linköping
Campus Valla is Linköping University's foundation campus, located in Linköping about three kilometres from the city centre. Campus Valla is also the largest campus by headcount: LiU in figures counts 19,100 students there.
University Hospital Campus, Linköping
The University Hospital Campus is also in Linköping, at Linköping University Hospital, and houses the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences. LiU in figures counts 2,800 students on the University Hospital Campus.
Campus Norrköping
LiU in figures counts 4,700 students on Campus Norrköping out of 46,200 students in total. Linköping University runs a free bus service for its students between Linköping and Norrköping.
Campus Lidingö (Malmstens)
At Campus Lidingö, Linköping University offers undergraduate programmes in Furniture Design, Cabinet-making and Furniture Upholstery, and the Campus Lidingö page notes that instruction is in Swedish. LiU in figures groups Lidingö with 25,000 distance students and students in other locations.
Where the English-taught bachelor is taught
The Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine programme page for autumn 2027 names Linköping as the place of study; the page does not name a single campus within the city. Plan your housing search around Linköping, not Norrköping.
The English-taught bachelor at LiU: Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine
Linköping University offers one international bachelor's programme taught in English: Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine, 180 credits, taught in Linköping and listed for autumn 2027 in the international admissions round under code LIU-51300.
The degree-studies page says Linköping University offers 30 international programmes and currently offers one international bachelor programme taught in English. Every other programme on that international list is a master's programme. If you want to study a bachelor's degree at Linköping University in English, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine is the only route.

What Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine contains
Linköping University describes Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine as the first international bachelor programme in Sweden that combines project management skills with practical experience of state-of-the-art biomedical research techniques. The programme page lists the fundamental fields as cell and molecular biology, medical biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology.
- Research semester: you can spend an entire semester performing research at Linköping University or at one of its industrial partners, in Sweden or abroad.
- Projects: during each semester you work on real projects from healthcare, industry or academia, with bioentrepreneurship as a strand of the project courses.
- Industry design: the programme page says the programme was designed in partnership with pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
LiU's other international programmes are master's programmes
Linköping University's international programme list is a master's list apart from Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine. Most of those master's programmes are two years long and count for 120 credits (ECTS). Examples close to biomedicine are Biomedical Engineering, Master's Programme, 120 credits and Protein Science, Master's Programme, 120 credits; another example is Computer Science, Master's Programme, 120 credits. These are master's programmes, so for a first degree taught in English at Linköping University, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine remains the route.
Linköping University acceptance rate: what is published
Linköping University does not publish an acceptance rate, applicant numbers or admit numbers for its English-taught bachelor, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine, or for international bachelor's applicants. University Admissions in Sweden says that it's impossible to say what merit rating is required for entry into specific courses and programmes, because the applicants change from semester to semester.
What Linköping University does publish is how selection works and how large the university is. The selection chapter explains the rule for Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine: places go by grades and the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test, ranked inside selection groups. The size figures give context, not odds.
| Question | What is published |
|---|---|
| Applicants and admits, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine | Not published by Linköping University or University Admissions |
| Admit rate, international bachelor's applicants | Not published |
| Merit rating needed for entry | University Admissions: impossible to say, because it changes each semester |
| Possible outcomes after selection | Accepted, placed on a waiting list, or deleted |
| Statistics from previous years | On the UHR website, as the Swedish Medical Programme page notes |
Where admission statistics are published
Linköping University points applicants to Universitets- och högskolerådet (UHR) for past results. The Swedish-language page of the Medical Programme (Läkarprogrammet) says that admission statistics for previous years are on the UHR website, with a search for the programme name. Those statistics describe earlier Swedish admission rounds; Linköping University does not present them as a forecast for autumn 2027.
For scale, LiU in figures reports 2,075 international students and 2,700 first cycle degrees in the figures based on the Annual Report for 2024. Those counts cover all programmes and levels of study, not admission to Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine.
Is there a merit rating that guarantees a place?
No. University Admissions states that the number of applicants for each programme, and the merit rating of those applicants, changes from semester to semester, so no merit rating is named in advance. After selection, University Admissions says you'll either be accepted, placed on a waiting list, or deleted from the programme.
The practical reading for Linköping University: meeting the entry requirements makes you eligible, and eligibility only puts you into the ranking. Your place then depends on how your grades compare with the other applicants in your selection group in that round.
How LiU selects bachelor students: grades and the merit rating
For autumn 2027, Linköping University selects applicants to Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine in the international admissions round on Grades 67%, Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test 33%. University Admissions turns your upper secondary grades into a merit rating on a scale from 10 - 22.5 and ranks eligible applicants against others with the same type of qualification.
The Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine page for autumn 2027 (international admissions round) names the selection basis as Grades 67%, Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test 33% and lists no letter of intent, interview or portfolio. Your grades and, if you have one, a result from the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (högskoleprovet) are what Linköping University ranks.
The Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test is sat at test sites in Sweden, and Linköping University explains it on a Swedish-language page, as the tests chapter shows. For most applicants from abroad, the grades share of 67% is the part of the Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine selection that their school results compete in.
How University Admissions ranks bachelor's applicants
University Admissions says that all applicants who meet the general and specific entry requirements for a programme compete with one another for the places that are available. Places are then offered based on eligible applicants' merit ratings.
- Merit rating: the University Admissions selection page (as of October 2026) says that for bachelor's programmes the merit rating is based on the upper secondary grades in your supporting documents, on a scale from 10 - 22.5.
- Selection groups: applicants with the same type of qualifications compete with each other inside one group, so an IB Diploma holder is ranked against other applicants in the same group, not against every applicant.
- Outcome: after selection you are accepted, placed on a waiting list, or deleted from the programme.
Linköping University's Swedish selection models
Linköping University's Swedish-language selection page (Urval) explains that there are often more eligible applicants than places, so a selection is made for example based on grades or the result of the högskoleprov. The page lists several models. The model matching the Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine split reads Betygsgrupper 67% Högskoleprov 33%, and the same page also lists Betygsgrupper 60% Högskoleprov 40% and Betygsgrupper 50% Högskoleprov 50% as other selection models.
Linköping University's Swedish selection page (as of October 2026) lists the model Betygsgrupper 67% Högskoleprov 33%: equal merits in the grade group are separated by the högskoleprov result, which the page calls the skiljekriterium (tie-breaker).
LiU admission tests: the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (högskoleprovet), SAT and ACT
The only admissions test in Linköping University's English-taught bachelor is the Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (högskoleprovet), which carries 33% of the selection for Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine in autumn 2027, next to grades at 67%. Linköping University does not name the SAT or the ACT in the selection or entry requirements for this programme.
No test is an entry requirement for Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine: the entry requirements are school subjects and English. The högskoleprov is a selection tool, so a result only adds a second way to compete for places. Linköping University's own page on the test says a weaker test result does not reduce your chances of admission on another basis.
SAT and ACT at Linköping University
Linköping University does not list SAT or ACT scores as a selection basis or as a way to meet entry requirements for Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine. For an applicant with a US high school diploma, University Admissions accepts AP courses for some subject requirements, which the entry requirements chapter covers; the SAT and ACT do not appear in those rules.
What the högskoleprov is and where you can take it
Linköping University explains the högskoleprov on a Swedish-language page. The test is the same across the country and given at the same time everywhere, on a Saturday or Sunday between 8.30 and 16.15.
| Item | What Linköping University states |
|---|---|
| Test day | A Saturday or Sunday, 8.30 to 16.15 |
| LiU test sites | Linköping, Norrköping, Mjölby and Motala, or another town in Sweden |
| Registration | Via hogskoleprov.nu, fee 550 kr |
| Validity | Results usable for five years; your best result counts |
Linköping University arranges the högskoleprov in Linköping, Norrköping, Mjölby and Motala, and the page adds that you can also sit the test in another town in Sweden. Every test site named is in Sweden, so taking the högskoleprov means being in Sweden on the test day. Registration is through hogskoleprov.nu and the fee is 550 kr.
Linköping University's högskoleprov page (as of October 2026) says a result can be used for five years, and the best result from the last five years always counts. The Linköping University page gives no test dates for 2027 and links to studera.nu for dates and registration periods.
Interviews and letters of intent
Linköping University does not publish an interview, a letter of intent or a portfolio as part of the selection for Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine. The programme page for autumn 2027 names only Grades 67%, Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test 33% as the selection basis.
How to apply to LiU for autumn 2027: universityadmissions.se, 15 January, 1 February
You apply to Linköping University's English-taught bachelor at universityadmissions.se in the first admissions round: on Linköping University's degree-studies page, applications opened on 16 October 2026, close on 15 January 2027, and the documentation and application fee deadline is 1 February 2027. Bachelor's results follow on 8 April and the autumn semester starts in August 2027.
Linköping University does not run its own bachelor's application. The degree-studies page sends you to University Admissions for step-by-step instructions on how to apply, and the how-to-apply page says that to apply for the bachelor's programme you should visit universityadmissions.se. University Admissions states that all deadlines are midnight CET at the end of the day on the date given.
The Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine page shows the same window in its Autumn 2027 block: Application period: 16 Oct - 15 Jan, application code LIU-51300. The University Admissions autumn-dates page names no cycle, so its dates (round opened 16 October 2026, deadline 15 January 2027, fee and documents by 1 February, bachelor's results 8 April) are the page as of October 2026.
The second admissions round and who it is for
University Admissions describes the second admissions round as the regular admissions round for students living in Sweden. All Swedish-taught programmes are open in that round, but many programmes taught in English are no longer available. For the second round, the University Admissions autumn-dates page as of October 2026 lists: round opens 15 March 2027, application deadline 15 April, fee and fee-exemption proof by 23 April, documents by 21 June, results on 9 July, last day to reply on 16 July and second results on 22 July.
- Non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens: University Admissions says they should not apply to the second round, because there is not enough time to obtain a residence permit.
- EU/EEA and Swiss citizens: you can apply for courses and programmes in the second round, where selection is in July and your final school grades should be available.
- Programme check: University Admissions says that in the second round many courses and programmes taught in English are no longer available. Confirm on universityadmissions.se that Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine is open in the second round before you plan on it.
If you finish school in spring 2027
This rule matters most if you finish school in spring 2027. University Admissions suggests that if you are in your final year, you don't apply for admission to the first round for autumn semester: selection is in April, and without final grades you have no grade point average to compete with. University Admissions also encourages all international students to apply to the first round; the two pieces of advice meet only if your school results are already final.
- IB Diploma in May 2027: University Admissions says do not apply to the first admissions round. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens can apply for courses and programmes in the second round, where selection is in July; for that round the University Admissions IB page says your IB coordinator should make your results available to University Admissions by 5 July through IB's Results Service, with recipient code "UHR". Non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens should not apply to the second round, so the last bullet below is their route.
- IB Diploma awarded in November 2026: the University Admissions IB page lists Autumn semester 2027 (first admissions round) for these applicants: your IB coordinator should make your results available to University Admissions through IB's Results Service, recipient code "UHR", no later than 1 February.
- If neither round fits: University Admissions notes that all students can wait and apply to the first round for a spring semester start, or to next year's first round for the autumn semester.
How the application works
On universityadmissions.se you choose Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine with the international round code LIU-51300 and rank your choices. You then upload your school documents. For Polish documents, University Admissions asks you to submit your documents in the original language and to add an official translation. The entry requirements chapter lists the documents for each diploma.
LiU English language requirements: English 6, IELTS and TOEFL
Every Linköping University bachelor's applicant must show English at the level of the Swedish upper secondary course English B/ English 6; with a test, Linköping University's own page asks for IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or a TOEFL iBT total of 90 with 20 in the written test. University Admissions, which assesses the application, states TOEFL minimums on the new 1-6 scale for results from 21 January 2026.
Linköping University's bachelor's requirements page (as of October 2026) asks for English corresponding to English B/ English 6, and University Admissions describes the bachelor's rule the same way: the general entry requirement for English is English 6/English Level 2. Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine asks for English 6 too, so the English bar for Linköping University's English-taught bachelor is the general one. You can meet English 6 with a test or, for many countries, with your upper secondary studies.
| Test | Linköping University page | University Admissions page |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.5 overall, no section below 5.5 | Accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS Online, IELTS UKVI (Academic) and IELTS One Skill Retake (Academic) |
| TOEFL iBT, results from 21 January 2026 | Not stated (old scale only) | Total 4.5 (scale 1-6), no section below 4 |
| TOEFL iBT, results up to 20 January 2026 | Total 90, written test 20 (scale 0-30) | Total 90, written test 20 |
| PTE Academic | Not listed | 62 (writing 61) |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | Not listed | Minimum overall 180 |
The two TOEFL rules differ. Linköping University's requirements page gives only the old-scale rule: TOEFL internet-based score of 20 (scale 0-30) in written test with a total score of 90. University Admissions splits by test date: the old-scale rule is for test results 20 January 2026 and earlier, and for test results 21 January 2026 and later the English 6 minimum is a total of 4.5 on the 1-6 scale with no section below 4.
Meeting English 6 with your school studies
University Admissions says there are many countries from which you can meet the English 6/English Level 2 requirement with upper secondary studies. The country pages (as of October 2026) state the rule for each school system:
- Poland: English at the advanced level (poziom rozszerzony) in the written Matura, with a minimum grade of 30% and a graduation year of 2005 or later.
- United States (diplomas 2024 and later): English 6 corresponds to High School (4 years) of English.
- United Kingdom: you must submit GCSE or GCE English; BTEC level 2 does not meet the requirement.
- Germany, Abitur: the University Admissions Germany page says you can meet the requirement with Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife or Zeugnis der Fachgebundenen Hochschulreife with either 4 English semesters from Qualifikationsphase (if primary foreign language), or Leistungskurs/Abiturprüfung in English.
- Germany, Fachhochschulreife: with Zeugnis der Fachhochschulreife you must have studied an additional English course or a course in English at the advanced level (Niveaustufe B2).
- University credits: 60 ECTS credits from one of the countries University Admissions lists also meet the requirement, if the courses were taught in English.
Tests that do not count and how scores are checked
- IELTS: University Admissions accepts IELTS Academic, IELTS Online, IELTS UKVI (Academic) and IELTS One Skill Retake (Academic), and does not accept IELTS General Training or IELTS Indicator.
- TOEFL: University Admissions accepts the TOEFL iBT, TOEFL iBT Home Edition and TOEFL iBT Paper Edition, and not TOEFL ITP, TOEFL iBT MyBest, Institutional TOEFL, TOEFL Essentials or the revised paper-delivered test of 2017-2021.
- Cambridge: University Admissions says a First Certificate in English does not meet the criteria, regardless of the result.
University Admissions checks scores itself. For IELTS, University Admissions verifies the test score online using the TRF number on your results; for TOEFL, a score that cannot be verified is not accepted, and the TOEFL test can be verified for up to 2 years after the test date. Book your test early enough that the result is online before the 1 February 2027 documentation deadline.
Swedish-taught bachelors at LiU: the Swedish requirement and TISUS
Linköping University's bachelor's requirements page (as of October 2026) says that undergraduate studies conducted in Swedish require skills in Swedish, both written and oral, at the level of a pass grade in Swedish upper secondary education; applicants who have not studied in Swedish upper secondary education normally document it with TISUS, Test in Swedish for University Studies. The English-taught bachelor, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine, carries an Exemption from Swedish.
Linköping University's bachelor's requirements page states that students applying for courses/programmes taught in English are exempted from the Swedish requirement. All other Linköping University undergraduate programmes, including the Medical Programme, are taught in Swedish, so the Swedish requirement decides whether those programmes are open to you at all.
Who does not need to prove Swedish
- English-taught programmes: applicants to Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine are exempted from the requirement of skills in Swedish.
- Nordic mother tongues: students with Swedish, Danish, Norwegian, Icelandic or Faeroese as their mother tongue do not have to verify knowledge of Swedish if their final upper secondary school certificate documents the mother tongue.
Tisus: the Swedish test for university studies
For students who did not study in Swedish upper secondary education, Linköping University's requirements page says Swedish is normally documented by the nationwide Swedish test TISUS, Test in Swedish for University Studies.
| Sitting | Test days | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Autumn 2026 | 20-21 October 2026 | Opened 3 August; deadline 11 September (passed) |
The application deadline for the autumn 2026 Tisus, 11 September, has passed, and the test days are 20-21 October 2026. Time any later Tisus sitting against the admissions round you apply in: the first-round deadline is 15 January 2027.
The Qualifying Course in Swedish
The degree-studies page says that for students who want to be able to study at university in Swedish, there is a Swedish qualifying course available at Linköping University.
Completing both semesters of the Qualifying Course in Swedish means you fulfill the general requirements in Swedish and Civics for university studies in Sweden. The EU/EEA course page still carries a note that the course would not be given during the spring semester 2023, so ask Linköping University which intakes run before you plan around the course.
Entry requirements at LiU by diploma: IB, A-levels, US diploma, Polish matura
To enter a Linköping University bachelor's programme you need completed upper secondary education (post-16) that gives access to universities in your home country, English 6, and Mathematics 1 if your final grades are from after 31 December 2009; Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine adds Engelska 6, Kemi 2, Biologi 2 and Matematik 4 for autumn 2027. University Admissions publishes no overall minimum grade or points total for the IB Diploma, A-levels, the US diploma or the Polish matura; only individual courses carry a pass grade.
Linköping University's bachelor's requirements page (as of October 2026) says that for Bachelor's level studies you must have successfully completed your upper secondary education (post-16) that gives access to universities in your home country. University Admissions (as of October 2026) sets out the same general requirements: you must have successfully completed your upper secondary (high school) education (post-16), and be able to demonstrate proficiency in English. For applicants whose final school grades came after 31 December 2009, there is an extra requirement equal to the Swedish courses Mathematics 1a, 1b or 1c. Linköping University's own requirements page confirms that additional entry requirement for mathematics.
| Diploma | What meets the general requirements | Published minimum grade |
|---|---|---|
| IB Diploma | An International Baccalaureate Diploma that lists subjects taken; a Non-regular IB Diploma is also accepted | No overall minimum published; for IB diplomas 2021 and later, IB courses used for the specific requirements need a minimum grade of 4, and grade 3 can be accepted at Higher Level in Biology, Chemistry and Physics |
| Poland | Secondary School Certificate: Świadectwo Dojrzałości and Świadectwo Ukończenia, from 2005 and later | None published |
| United States | High School Graduation Diploma + Official transcript for all years (9-12 or 10-12) | None published; AP courses need a grade of at least 3 |
| United Kingdom | At least two GCE A level plus GCSE/IGCSE/O level subjects, at least five different subjects in total | None published; listed GCSE courses need 4 or C, GCE A/AS courses E |
The grades in the last column are pass grades for a listed course, not a selection threshold. Meeting the requirements makes you eligible; University Admissions then ranks you by merit rating against applicants in your selection group, as the selection chapter explains.
IB Diploma
University Admissions accepts the IB Diploma for the general requirements, and notes that how you meet the general, specific and English requirements can vary a bit depending on when you received your IB diploma. IB students finishing in May 2027 also face the round rule in the how-to-apply chapter.
Specific requirements for Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine
The Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine page for autumn 2027 (international admissions round) asks for General entry requirements for undergraduate studies and English, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics at the levels Engelska 6 or Engelska nivå 2, Kemi 2 or Kemi nivå 2, Biologi 2 or Biologi nivå 2 and Matematik 4 or Matematik fortsättning nivå 2 of Swedish upper secondary school. The University Admissions bachelor's requirements page (as of October 2026) explains that these specific requirements are outlined in the individual course and programme descriptions found on universities' websites.
- US, Matematik 4 (University Admissions US page as of October 2026, diplomas 2024 and later): AP Calculus AB, or AP Calculus BC, or Calculus and Pre-calculus.
- US, Kemi 2: AP Chemistry together with Biology and Chemistry from earlier years.
- US, Biologi 2: AP Biology. The US table only applies to applications for Autumn Semester 2026 and later, which includes autumn 2027.
- UK, Matematik 4 and Kemi 2: for courses completed from 2015 to 2024, the UK page (as of October 2026) maps them to GCE A/AS level Mathematics and GCE A/AS level Chemistry.
Abitur, French baccalauréat and other EU certificates
Linköping University does not publish its own rules for the German Abitur, the French baccalauréat or other EU school-leaving certificates. University Admissions keeps a country page for each school system and states the general principle: if the studies you completed in a previous country grant you general eligibility for university studies there, they most likely will meet the general eligibility requirements in Sweden. The University Admissions Germany page (as of October 2026) lists Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife, Zeugnis der Fachgebundenen Hochschulreife, Zeugnis der Fachhochschulreife and Zeugnis der Reife / Reifezeugnis as meeting the general criteria, and adds that this completed education must qualify you for higher education studies in the country you received it. Its France page says the Diplôme de baccalauréat général/technologique/professionnel + relevé de notes du baccalauréat meets the general requirement. Match your courses to Kemi 2, Biologi 2 and Matematik 4 on the country page for your school system.
Medicine at LiU (Läkarprogrammet) and other Swedish-taught programmes
Linköping University's Medical Programme (Läkarprogrammet, 360 credits) is taught in Swedish: the latest published intake, autumn 2026, lists Education language Swedish and selection on Grades 67%, Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test 33%. The programme page lists only Autumn 2026 and Spring 2027 intakes, with no autumn 2027 block yet.
Because the Medical Programme is taught in Swedish, you need the Swedish requirement described in the Swedish requirement chapter on top of the subject requirements. The Medical Programme page shows no international admissions round block, unlike Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine. Linköping University's Swedish admission page says that most courses and programmes are applied for via antagning.se, the Swedish application site.
| Item | Programme page |
|---|---|
| Credits | 360 credits |
| Language | Swedish (application code LIU-50313) |
| Degree | Degree of Master of Science in Medicine |

| Selection | Grades 67%, Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test 33% |
| Tuition (outside EU, EEA, Switzerland) | SEK 1,278,000 |
The tuition figure of SEK 1,278,000 on the Medical Programme page has no per-year label, and the page says it applies only to students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. The figure belongs to the autumn 2026 block; Linköping University has not yet published a block for autumn 2027.
Which Medical Programme intakes are published
The English Medical Programme page lists Autumn 2026 Spring 2027 as its intakes. The Swedish page shows the spring 2027 intake as VT 2027 and says it will not open for late application. For an applicant aiming at autumn 2027, the autumn 2026 rules above are the latest published version, not a confirmed 2027 rule.
The alternative selection for work experience
The Swedish Läkarprogrammet page describes an alternative selection to 12 of the places based on work experience of at least 2 years half-time after age 19 in medicine and care occupations. Linköping University's page on special selection at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences confirms that 12 study places in selection round 1 go to that group for the Medical Programme, and that the nursing programme uses special selection for 10 percent of its places.
- Requirements: to take part you must meet the programme's entry requirements, have work experience from occupations in medicine and care, and have a valid högskoleprov result.
Problem-based learning in the Medical Programme
Linköping University states that its Medical Programme was the first in Sweden to establish problem-based learning (PBL).
LiU tuition fees, the application fee and scholarships
The Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine page for autumn 2027 states tuition of SEK 607,000 and says it applies only to students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland; citizens of a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland also pay an application fee of SEK 900. Linköping University's own scholarship, the LiU International Scholarship, is aimed at supporting international master's degree students.
Linköping University's fees page sets the rule: if you are a citizen from a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, you pay an application fee to University Admissions and tuition fees to Linköping University.
Who pays and how to prove you are exempt
Exemption is not automatic. Linköping University says that all non-fee-paying applicants need to provide documentation of their citizenship status before they can be assessed as non-fee-paying. On the University Admissions autumn-dates page (as of October 2026), the deadline to document fee-exempt status in the first round is 1 February.
The application fee
The application fee of SEK 900 is paid to universityadmissions.se and covers the processing of your application. University Admissions says students pay one application fee for each semester they apply for: whatever the number of programmes or rounds in that semester, you pay 900 kronor just one time. Payments received after the deadline turn your application status to late, and late applications are only processed at each university's discretion if places are available.
Tuition for Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine
The Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine page for autumn 2027 states SEK 607000 - NB: Applies only to students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland. The page does not say whether the figure is per year or for the whole programme. Linköping University's fees page explains that the tuition fee is based on the number of credits for the programme, not the number of semesters.
- Instalments: payments are made in instalments before each semester begins, and Linköping University accepts one semester's tuition at a time.
- Deadline: the fees page says that with an admission offer at the end of March the deadline is 15 May, and with an offer in July or later you pay within 10 days. Linköping University's degree-studies page gives 8 April as the notification date for bachelor's selection results, and the fees page names no separate bachelor's date, so take the deadline from your offer.
- What it does not cover: course literature, housing and living costs; Linköping University estimates approximately SEK 10,000 a month for those.
Scholarships for bachelor's applicants
The LiU International Scholarship is aimed at supporting international master's degree students with significant academic potential who pay tuition fees, and normally reduces tuition by 50%. Linköping University publishes no equivalent scholarship for its bachelor's programme.
The other route is the Swedish Institute. Linköping University says that for some programmes and nationalities you can apply for a Swedish Institute scholarship, and that not all programmes and not all countries are eligible. If you do receive a Swedish Institute scholarship, you do not need to pay any tuition fees. Linköping University does not publish whether Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine is among the eligible programmes.
Housing, residence permit and insurance for LiU students
Linköping University does not offer accommodation to degree students, so as an Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine student you find housing yourself, with student rents starting at approximately SEK 4,000 per month. If you are from outside the EU/EEA, you also need a residence permit or a visa, and your tuition fee must be paid before you apply for residence permit.
Housing in Linköping runs on queues, and the queue rewards time. Linköping University explains that most Swedish housing companies use online queue systems where you earn one point for each day you are registered, so registering early matters more than any other step.
Finding student housing in Linköping
- Register with housing companies' online queues as early as you can: you earn one point for each day you are registered.
- Rent: student rooms start at approximately SEK 4,000 per month and usually include electricity, heating and internet.
- Budget: Linköping University estimates approximately SEK 10,000 a month for housing, living costs and course literature together.
The residence permit for non-EU students
Linköping University's residence permit page says that students from a non-EU or non-EEA country require a residence permit or a visa to study at LiU, and that your tuition fee must be paid before you apply for residence permit. Processing usually takes two to three months. Linköping University's degree-studies page gives bachelor's selection results on 8 April and the semester start in August 2027. University Admissions advises that non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens should not apply to the second round, because there will not be enough time to apply for and receive the residence permit.
The residence permit page also says that from 11 June, new rules apply to residence permits for bachelor's or master's studies; the page does not give the year or the content of the new rules, so read the Swedish Migration Agency's current guidance when you apply. Linköping University's how-to-apply page for master's studies also states that students who are not EU citizens must take courses of at least 30 ECTS per semester, which is full-time study, as one requirement for the permit.
Insurance: Kammarkollegiet
All of LiU's students registered in the Student Records System (Ladok) have personal injury insurance from the Legal Financial and Administrative Service Agency (Kammarkollegiet), paid for by Linköping University.
Who is Linköping University for? Summary
Linköping University suits a science-minded applicant who wants a bachelor's in English in biomedicine: it offers one international bachelor programme taught in English, Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine, and the first admissions round for it closes on 15 January 2027. For any other bachelor's programme at Linköping University you need Swedish.
Linköping University fits you if you have Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics at the levels Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine asks for, want a research semester and project work with industry, and are ready to live in Linköping. Linköping University fits less well if you want a choice of English-taught bachelor's subjects, or if you are a non-EU applicant hoping for a university scholarship, because the LiU International Scholarship is for master's students.
Who Linköping University suits, and who it does not
- Suits: EU/EEA and Swiss citizens with strong science grades, since the tuition applies only to students from outside the EU, EEA and Switzerland.
- Suits with planning: non-EU applicants, who must pay tuition as a citizen from a country outside the European Union (EU), European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, and then obtain a residence permit before the August 2027 start.
- Does not suit: applicants who want a Swedish-taught programme without Swedish; those programmes require skills in Swedish, both written and oral.
- Watch the timing: if you are in your final year of school, University Admissions suggests that you don't apply for admission to the first round for autumn semester, which changes your plan.
Next steps for autumn 2027 entry
What to check again before you apply
- Your subjects: match your courses to Kemi 2, Biologi 2 and Matematik 4 on the University Admissions country page for your school system.
- IB rules: University Admissions says how you meet the general, specific and English requirements can vary a bit depending on when you received your IB diploma.
- No promised cut-off: University Admissions says it's impossible to say what merit rating is required, so no grade guarantees a place.
- Your round: confirm which admissions round fits your school-leaving date before 15 January 2027.

What is the Linköping University application deadline for autumn 2027?
Applications opened on 16 October 2026 and close on 15 January 2027; the application fee and supporting documents are due by 1 February 2027. No test is an entry requirement. The Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (högskoleprovet) carries 33% of the selection, but its test sites are in Linköping, Norrköping, Mjölby and Motala, so sitting it means being in Sweden. Linköping University does not list the SAT or the ACT for this programme.
What English test score does Linköping University accept?
You need English at the level of Swedish upper secondary English B/ English 6. Linköping University's page names IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with no section below 5.5, or a TOEFL iBT total of 90 with 20 in the written test. Linköping University does not publish whether Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine is eligible.
Do I need a visa or residence permit to study at Linköping University?
Students from a non-EU or non-EEA country require a residence permit or a visa, and your tuition fee must be paid before you apply for residence permit. Processing usually takes two to three months. Not for Experimental and Industrial Biomedicine: applicants to English-taught programmes are exempted from the requirement of skills in Swedish. Every other Linköping University bachelor's programme requires pass-level Swedish from Swedish upper secondary education, and applicants schooled abroad usually prove it with the Tisus test.
Can I apply in the first round if I finish school in spring 2027?
University Admissions suggests that final-year students don't apply for admission to the first round for autumn semester, because selection is in April, before final grades exist. IB Diploma candidates finishing in May 2027 are told not to apply to the first round. EU/EEA and Swiss citizens can apply for courses and programmes in the second round, where selection is in July; non-EU/EEA/Swiss citizens should not apply to the second round, and all students can wait and apply to a later first round.
