University of Mannheim admission at a glance
Applications for a Mannheim Bachelor in the fall semester (HWS) 2027 run 1 June to 15 July / 31 August 2027 (the university's Herbst-/Wintersemester 2027/2028), and the University of Mannheim offers no Bachelor programme taught entirely in English: German at level C1 is required for all Bachelor programmes if you hold neither German citizenship nor a German entrance qualification.
The closing date depends on the programme, according to the page as of October 2026: in the university's table, Betriebswirtschaftslehre, Volkswirtschaftslehre, Psychologie, Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie, Wirtschaftsinformatik, Wirtschaftsmathematik and Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft run 1.6. to 15.7., while Kultur und Wirtschaft: Anglistik/Amerikanistik, Wirtschaftspädagogik and Romanische Sprachen, Literaturen und Medien run 1.6. to 31.8.. Read the closing date of your own programme before you plan anything else.
The key facts by topic
Three rules that catch applicants out
- German C1 proof is needed by the application deadline: the non-EU/EEA page says that the German proof at C1 is required by the application deadline.
- The 15 July Ausschlussfrist: the same page says that applications you withdraw to change uploads must be completed again by 15 July of the current year.
- English proof for selection points in Betriebswirtschaftslehre: Mannheim must hold it by 15 July at the latest for you to receive the points.
Cost: the semester contribution is 194 euros for the Herbst-/Wintersemester 2026/2027 (2026/2027, the latest published). The Betriebswirtschaftslehre programme page also lists 1.500 euros (one thousand five hundred) in fees for non-EU foreigners; the tuition chapter covers it.

University of Mannheim rankings and reputation
The University of Mannheim cites subject rankings on its own rankings page: world rank 105 in the QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026 for Social Sciences and Management, and 2nd and 3rd place in Germany in the Times Higher Education subject rankings 2026 for economics and social sciences.
Every figure in this chapter is a claim the university makes on its own rankings page, according to the page as of October 2026, not a figure taken from the ranking publisher's own tables.
What Mannheim cites, by subject
| Ranking | Edition | Mannheim's claim |
|---|---|---|
| QS World University Rankings by Subject | 2026 | Social Sciences and Management: world rank 105 |
| Times Higher Education Ranking by Subject | 2026 | Economics 2nd and social sciences 3rd in Germany: 2nd and 3rd |
| ShanghaiRanking Global Ranking of Academic Subjects | 2026 | Top places in Germany in politics, psychology, business, finance, management, communication, economics and sociology; no positions stated |
| Financial Times Masters in Management (a Master programme) | 2026 | Mannheim Master in Management: 2nd in Germany, 32nd worldwide |
How to read these lines
The ShanghaiRanking sentence names subjects but gives no positions, the Financial Times line concerns one Master programme, and none of the four lines is an admission rule. For a Bachelor applicant they show where Mannheim places its strength: business, economics and the social sciences.
Reputation and profile
Mannheim states that it is the only state university in Germany with international semester times: lectures begin in September in the Herbst-/Wintersemester and in February in the Frühjahrs-/Sommersemester.
Mannheim acceptance rate and competition for places
The University of Mannheim's admission pages give no admit rate for its Bachelor programmes, and the university says itself that it is very hard to predict your chances because many factors determine how applications are ranked.
Mannheim's admission pages give no application, offer or admit-rate figures for the Bachelor programmes, according to the page as of October 2026. A rate built from outside numbers would say little about your own application.
What Mannheim says about your chances
The university's Chancen page states the problem plainly: chances are very hard to predict, since a large number of factors determine the ranking of the applications.
Where competition shows up in the rules
| Mechanism | What the page states | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Equal applications | Up to three equal applications into the first semester | Admission-restricted Bachelor programmes (non-EU/EEA page) |
| Dialogorientiertes Serviceverfahren (DoSV) | 12 applications in total, at most three at Mannheim | Programmes allocated through the DoSV |
| Entrance examination | Only the Bachelor Wirtschaftsinformatik has an Aufnahmeprüfung | Wirtschaftsinformatik |
| Lottery application | A Losantrag must reach Mannheim by 1 September at the latest | Bachelor programmes; the page names no year |
Check on the page of your own programme whether it is admission-restricted (zulassungsbeschränkt).
How Mannheim selects Bachelor students: Auswahlverfahren and Auswahlsatzung
Selection at Mannheim runs programme by programme: in Betriebswirtschaftslehre, for example, English proof earns selection points only if it arrives by 15 July. You can file up to three equal applications into the first semester of admission-restricted Bachelor programmes, and a lottery application must reach the university by 1 September at the latest.
The criteria differ by programme, so what you read for one programme does not carry over to another: the table below shows how the English proof counts in three programmes, according to the page as of October 2026. Read the selection rules (Auswahlsatzung) of your own programme before you apply.
Elements the pages name
| Programme | What the page links to selection |
|---|---|
| Betriebswirtschaftslehre | English proof gives selection points only if it arrives by 15 July; school route needs an English average of at least 11 points |
| Current English Linguistics and Literary Studies; Kultur und Wirtschaft: Anglistik | School route needs an English average of at least 10 points |
| Wirtschaftsinformatik | Entrance examination (Aufnahmeprüfung); English proof is an access requirement due by 15 July |
How many applications you can file
The non-EU/EEA page allows up to three equal applications into the first semester of admission-restricted Bachelor programmes. Through the Dialogorientiertes Serviceverfahren (DoSV) the page allows 12 applications in total, at most three at Mannheim. Only applications that are complete, documented and on time take part: only complete online applications with the required proofs that arrive on time enter the allocation.
After the main round
A lottery (Losverfahren) has its own application: a Losantrag for Bachelor programmes must reach Mannheim by 1 September at the latest.
Three application routes: German, EU/EEA and non-EU applicants
Mannheim does not use uni-assist: the university states that it does not cooperate with uni-assist and that all international applicants apply directly to Mannheim. If you come from outside the EU and the EEA and hold no German university entrance qualification, you apply online for your programme and upload your documents in the Bewerbungsportal.
The university keeps separate pages for German applicants, for EU/EEA citizens and for non-EU/EEA citizens. The non-EU/EEA page is written for international applicants from outside the EU and the EEA without a German entrance qualification. The statements below are according to the page as of October 2026.
| Route | What the page states |
|---|---|
| Non-EU/EEA citizens without a German entrance qualification | Apply online for the programme of your choice and upload the documents in the Bewerbungsportal |
| EU/EEA citizens (international applicants) | No uni-assist: all international applicants apply directly to the University of Mannheim |
| Programmes allocated through the DoSV | 12 applications in total through the DoSV, at most three at Mannheim |
No uni-assist
The non-EU/EEA page repeats the point: Mannheim does not cooperate with uni-assist, and all international applicants apply directly. You send your application to Mannheim itself, not to an external evaluation service.
The DoSV and how many applications you may file
Some programmes are allocated through the Dialogorientiertes Serviceverfahren (DoSV) of hochschulstart. The page allows 12 applications at the universities taking part, at most three of them at Mannheim. For admission-restricted Bachelor programmes the non-EU/EEA page allows up to three equal applications into the first semester.
Documents
Documents are uploaded in the Bewerbungsportal, and only complete online applications with the required proofs that arrive on time take part in the allocation. Check the list of documents for your certificate and programme before the closing date.
Mannheim requirements for IB, A-levels and other foreign school-leaving certificates
For the IB Diploma, Mannheim states that the diploma is recognised as a university entrance qualification if subjects, levels and grading meet the rules; your grade then counts inside the ranking of the programme you choose, where a large number of factors determine the ranking of the applications.
According to the page as of October 2026, the university's page "Hochschulzugangsberechtigung - Internationale Studieninteressierte" sets the rules on whether your certificate counts as an entrance qualification (HZB). If it does not, read the Studienkolleg chapter that follows.
IB Diploma
The page ties recognition of the IB Diploma to subjects, levels and grading: if they meet the regulations, the IB Diploma is recognised as an entrance qualification. The page also links an agreement for the IB programme dated 15.06.2023, valid from the 2025 examination as background. Check your own subject, level and grade combination against the rules on that page before you rely on it.
Foreign certificates that also appear as German proof
| Certificate | What the page states | Counts for |
|---|---|---|
| IB Diploma | Recognised as an entrance qualification if subjects, levels and grading meet the rules | Entrance qualification (HZB) |
| German as Language A in the IB Diploma | Minimum grade 6; the PDF adds subject to committee approval | German C1 proof |
| Polish Matura exam in German | May be recognised at general lyceums with a bilingual stream with German as second language of instruction | German C1 proof |
| US Advanced Placement exam in German | May be recognised | German C1 proof |
How your grade counts
Your grade counts inside the ranking of the programme you choose, and the university says that a large number of factors determine the ranking of the applications. Read the selection rules of your own programme before you estimate where you stand.
Studienkolleg and Feststellungsprüfung for Mannheim
If you need a place in a Studienkolleg, you still start with Mannheim: the non-EU/EEA page says you apply first for your chosen Mannheim programme and need German at C1 proven by the application deadline.
The Studienkolleg is a preparation course that ends with the Feststellungsprüfung, an examination that shows your certificate and preparation are equal to a German entrance qualification.
Who needs it
A Studienkolleg is for applicants whose foreign certificate does not count as a German entrance qualification on its own. Whether yours does is decided under the entrance-qualification rules described in the previous chapter.
The order of steps
German before the Studienkolleg
The German proof is not postponed until the course: the German proof at C1 level is required by the application deadline. The accepted certificates and exemptions are listed in the German-requirements chapter.
Other Studienkollegs
If you plan a Studienkolleg elsewhere, ask Mannheim's admissions office before you enrol whether its Feststellungsprüfung counts for your programme.
German language requirements for Mannheim Bachelor programmes (C1)
Mannheim asks for German at level C1 in all its Bachelor and teacher-education programmes if you hold neither German citizenship nor a German university entrance qualification: proof of German at level C1 is required for all bachelor's and teacher education programs, and for non-EU/EEA applicants the German proof at C1 is required by the application deadline.
For a German-taught programme the page words the level as C1, with the Goethe-Zertifikat C2 in brackets. The statements in this chapter are according to the page as of October 2026. Because Mannheim offers no Bachelor programme taught entirely in English, there is no English-only way around the requirement.
Accepted certificates
| Certificate | What the page states |
|---|---|
| TestDaF | At least 4 points in every part |
| DSH | Overall grade at least 2 (DSH 2) |
| telc | telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule |
| Goethe-Zertifikat | Goethe-Zertifikat C2 |
| Österreichisches Sprachdiplom (ÖSD) | ÖSD C1 or better |
| IB Diploma | German as Language A with minimum grade 6; the PDF adds subject to committee approval |
Certificates that may count
Some school certificates may be recognised as German proof: the Polish Matura exam in German at general lyceums with a bilingual stream, the US Advanced Placement exam in German, and leaving certificates from the German-speaking Community of Belgium, from Luxembourg and from schools teaching in German in South Tyrol. The word is "may": the university decides, so ask before you rely on one.
Who is exempt
You need no German certificate if you hold a German-language entrance qualification from a state or region with German as official language, taught in German. Applicants on the non-EU/EEA route book the exam early enough to hold the result by the application deadline.
English and other language requirements for Mannheim Bachelor programmes
Mannheim sets English requirements programme by programme: Betriebswirtschaftslehre asks for TOEFL iBT of at least 100 or IELTS Academic of at least 7.0, Current English Linguistics and Literary Studies (CELLS) and Kultur und Wirtschaft: Anglistik for TOEFL iBT of at least 72, and Wirtschaftsinformatik for TOEFL iBT of at least 79.
These are the figures on the university's language page for Bachelor programmes, according to the page as of October 2026; the English rule differs by programme. Because no Bachelor programme is taught entirely in English, German at C1 still applies even where the programme page lists English and German as the language of instruction, as for Betriebswirtschaftslehre.
| Proof | Betriebswirtschaftslehre | CELLS and Kultur und Wirtschaft: Anglistik | Wirtschaftsinformatik |
|---|---|---|---|
| TOEFL iBT (test date score) | 100 | 72 (CELLS); 72 (Anglistik) | 79; CBT 213; PBT 550 |
| IELTS Academic | 7.0 | 6.0 (CELLS); 6.0 (Anglistik) | 6.0 |
| telc | telc Niveau C1 | B2 (CELLS); B2 (Anglistik) | B2 |
| Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) | Level C | Accepted, no level stated (CELLS) | Level C1 |
| Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE) | Level C | Accepted, no level stated (CELLS) | Not listed on the language page |
Validity and sending results
For Betriebswirtschaftslehre, test results must not be older than two years. The page also lists the Language Certificate of the Studium Generale of the University of Mannheim at C1 throughout as proof for that programme. For TOEFL, test date scores count and MyBest scores are not considered; to send a TOEFL iBT result directly, use the institution code 0254. Some tests may be taken at home and are accepted.
School grades as proof
A school route exists on the same page: English taken throughout upper school with an average in the entrance qualification of at least 11 points for Betriebswirtschaftslehre, at least 10 points for CELLS and Kultur und Wirtschaft: Anglistik, and at least 7 points for Wirtschaftsinformatik. For Betriebswirtschaftslehre only the English grades of the four upper-school half-years count, and the points may not be rounded up. Check on the page whether your own school certificate qualifies for this route; otherwise plan a test.
When the proof is due
- Betriebswirtschaftslehre: for selection points, the proof must reach Mannheim by 15 July at the latest.
- Wirtschaftsinformatik: the English proof is an access requirement, part of the entrance examination, due by 15 July.
Mannheim admissions tests: entrance examination, aptitude and orientation tests
Currently only the Bachelor Wirtschaftsinformatik has an entrance examination (Aufnahmeprüfung). For Psychologie the page refers to the current aptitude test BaPsy, and no orientation test is needed for the application. Language proofs belong to the English and German chapters.
The statements in this chapter are according to the page as of October 2026. Selection runs programme by programme, so check the rules of your own programme for any test it names.
| Test | What the page states | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Entrance examination (Aufnahmeprüfung) | Currently only for the Bachelor Wirtschaftsinformatik | Wirtschaftsinformatik |
| Aptitude test BaPsy of the German Society for Psychology | STAV-Psych was last offered in 2022, can still be considered and was replaced by BaPsy | Psychology |
| Orientation test | No orientation test is needed for the application | Non-EU/EEA page |
Wirtschaftsinformatik: the entrance examination
Wirtschaftsinformatik is the only programme with an Aufnahmeprüfung. Its English proof is an access requirement and is part of the examination: the English proof must be available by 15 July at the latest. The language levels are in the English chapter.
Psychology: aptitude test
For Psychologie, the STAV-Psych was replaced by the current aptitude test BaPsy of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Psychologie. If you took the older test, the STAV-Psych was last offered in 2022 but can still be considered in the application.
Orientation test
The page says no orientation test is needed for the application; you need one only once you hold an offer and want to accept the place.
Mannheim application step by step for the fall semester (HWS) 2027
The Bachelor application window for the fall semester (HWS) 2027, which the university calls the Herbst-/Wintersemester 2027/2028, runs 1 June to 15 July / 31 August 2027, and the date that closes your application depends on the programme. Lectures begin on 6.9.2027.
The window is the same for applicants with an older Abitur (the page adds that it applies also to applicants with an older Abitur). The statements in this chapter are from the university's deadline page and the non-EU/EEA application page, according to the page as of October 2026. The non-EU/EEA page adds that the German proof at C1 is required by the application deadline.
| Programme | Application window |

For a programme not in this table, use the university's deadline table for the same semester.
The dates in order
How the online application works
You apply online for your programme and upload your documents in the Bewerbungsportal. Only complete online applications with the required proofs that arrive on time take part in the allocation. Check every upload before the closing date.
After admission and fees
For enrolment after an offer, one rule is fixed: paying the semester contribution is required for enrolment and re-registration.
What to study at Mannheim: Bachelor programmes
The University of Mannheim states that it offers 35 different Bachelor programmes in five faculties; Betriebswirtschaftslehre and most programmes in the table below run 6 semesters (3 years), and the programme pages name German, English or both as the language of instruction. No Bachelor programme is taught entirely in English, so German at C1 is needed for all Bachelor programmes.
The overview below is according to the page as of October 2026 for each programme. The language column shows the order in which the page lists the languages. The English-and-German programmes are not English-only degrees: German at C1 is needed for all Bachelor programmes, as the university's page for prospective students says.
The programmes at a glance
Business Administration (Betriebswirtschaftslehre)
The Bachelor of Science in Betriebswirtschaftslehre runs 6 semesters (3 years). The faculty cites over 200 partner universities worldwide. Admission has one specific you must plan around: English proof earns selection points only if it reaches Mannheim by 15 July at the latest. The levels per test are in the English chapter.
Economics, business informatics and mathematics
Volkswirtschaftslehre, Wirtschaftsinformatik and Wirtschaftsmathematik each lead to a Bachelor of Science in 6 semesters (3 years). Wirtschaftsinformatik is the only programme with an entrance examination: currently only the Bachelor Wirtschaftsinformatik has an Aufnahmeprüfung. Wirtschaftsmathematik is listed with German as its language of instruction.
Social sciences, psychology, law and humanities
Politikwissenschaft, Soziologie and Medien- und Kommunikationswissenschaft lead to a Bachelor of Arts. Psychologie is a Bachelor of Science taught in German, and the aptitude test is described in the tests chapter. The combined programme Unternehmensjurist/in leads to an LL.B. and the first state examination (Staatsexamen) over 6 + 4 semesters (3 + 2 years) and is taught in German. Current English Linguistics and Literary Studies (CELLS) and Wirtschaft und Anglistik/Amerikanistik list English first among their languages, and each language rule is in the English chapter. Romanische Sprachen, Literaturen und Medien takes 8 semesters (4 years).
Exchange semesters and semester times
The exchange page cites 450 partner universities on five continents and exchange without tuition fees. Mannheim states that it is the only state university in Germany with international semester times, with lectures starting in September and February.
Career prospects: what Mannheim graduates do next
The University of Mannheim states two rules on working in Germany: during studies, international students with a §16b residence permit may work up to 140 full days or 280 half days per calendar year, and after graduation you can apply for a residence permit to search for a job for up to 18 months.
Both rules come from the university's page on visas and residence permits for international full-time students, according to the page as of October 2026. They describe legal limits, not where Mannheim graduates work or what they earn.
| Situation | What the page states |
|---|---|
| During studies, with a residence permit | Under §16b: up to 140 full days or 280 half days of work per calendar year |
| After graduation | Residence permit to search for a job for up to 18 months |
Graduate outcomes
For employment rates or starting salaries, ask the programme or the university's career service for the latest graduate survey of your programme before you apply.
Career support
After your degree, the job-search residence permit above is a legal route for staying in Germany to look for work.
Tuition and fees at Mannheim: the fee for non-EU students and the semester contribution
The Betriebswirtschaftslehre programme page lists 1.500 euros (one thousand five hundred) in fees for non-EU foreigners next to a semester contribution of 194 euros for the Herbst-/Wintersemester 2026/2027 (2026/2027, the latest published).
The programme page words the line "Gebühren für Nicht-EU-Ausländer*innen", according to the page as of October 2026, and lists it next to the semester contribution. Ask the university's fee office whether it applies to you and for which period it is charged before you budget.
| Item | Amount | Who pays |
|---|---|---|
| Fee for non-EU foreigners | 1.500 euros | Non-EU students, per the programme page |
| Semester contribution | 194 euros (2026/2027, the latest published) | All students |
| Second degree | 650 euros | Students in a second degree, per the programme page |
| Late re-registration | 20 euros | Students who re-register late |
The semester contribution
Paying the contribution is required for enrolment and for re-registration in the next semester.
Living costs
For living costs the university's financing page advises you to plan about 950 to 1.000 euros a month. It breaks this down into rent of about 320 to 600 euros and health insurance of about 140 to 160 euros. The amounts are estimates for Mannheim, according to the page as of October 2026. The health-insurance figure differs on another Mannheim page, which names a lower amount; see the visa chapter.
Mannheim scholarships and financial aid
Mannheim states that about 200 students receive a scholarship every year, and its two calls for the Studienjahr 2026/27 (the latest published) pay 300 euros a month for a Deutschlandstipendium and 150 euros a month for each of three Mannheim-Stipendien.
The university has offered funding since 2007. The calls below belong to the Studienjahr 2026/27, the latest published; do not read these dates or amounts as the terms of your first year. The other statements are according to the page as of October 2026.
| Scholarship | Amount and term |
|---|---|
| Deutschlandstipendium | 300 euros a month, 1.8.2026 to 31.7.2027 |
| Mannheim-Stipendium | Three scholarships, 1.8.2026 to 31.7.2027, 150 euros a month each |
Funding beyond the university
The financing page points international students to two outside sources. Many international students are eligible for BAföG. The DAAD scholarship for more equal opportunities usually covers four months and is currently possible only in the Herbst-/Wintersemester, from August to November. If you arrive from abroad for a first degree, check the eligibility rules of each call before you count on it.
Housing in Mannheim
No accommodation guarantee for first-year international students is stated, according to the page as of October 2026; the Studierendenwerk Mannheim has about 3.000 mostly furnished rooms in 17 halls, and the university's financing page puts rent at about 320 to 600 euros a month.
Because no guarantee is stated, treat a hall room as something you apply for, not something Mannheim assigns, and search as early as you can, before you arrive.
Where students live
The city has about 300.000 inhabitants from over 167 nations and 17 districts that the page describes as well connected to the university by public transport.
Cost
Rent of about 320 to 600 euros a month is the figure inside the university's living-cost estimate of about 950 to 1.000 euros a month.
Student life at the University of Mannheim and in Mannheim
Mannheim runs on international semester times: lectures begin in September in the Herbst-/Wintersemester and in February in the Frühjahrs-/Sommersemester, and the university states that it is the only state university in Germany with international semester times.
For the fall semester (HWS) 2027 this means a September start: lectures from 6.9.2027 to 10.12.2027. The statements are according to the page as of October 2026.
Support and recognition
The university's page for international students mentions a DAAD prize of 1.000 euros for international students as a special distinction.
Visa, residence permit and arrival for Mannheim
Apply for your visa early: Mannheim says to apply as soon as the university confirms receipt of your application documents. Students from the EU and EEA and from a listed set of countries need no visa, and graduates can apply for a job-search residence permit for up to 18 months.
The statements follow the university's page on visa and residence permit, according to the page as of October 2026. No visa is needed by students from the EU and EEA and from, among others, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Israel, Japan, South Korea, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the USA. Check the full list on the page for your passport.
| Step | What the page states |
|---|---|
| Before arrival | Apply for the visa early, once the university confirms receipt of your application |
| With a visa | Apply online for the residence permit 4 to 6 weeks before the visa expires |
| During studies | With a §16b permit: up to 140 full or 280 half days of work per calendar year |
| After graduation | Job-search residence permit for up to 18 months |
Health insurance and financing
The applicant checklist puts German statutory health insurance at about 120 euros a month, the student rate, and student insurance ends at age 30. The financing page names a higher range of about 140 to 160 euros, so budget for the higher figure. Ask the German embassy or consulate how much money you must show for the visa.
