Newcastle University admission at a glance for international applicants

Newcastle University takes undergraduate applications for September 2027 entry through UCAS, most courses reach their equal consideration date on 13 January 2027, and ABB at A level is typically the minimum for an undergraduate course.

Newcastle is a university in the centre of a regional capital in North East England, and it admits international applicants through the same single route as British students. The university says it has students from around 130 countries, and it states that your qualification can still be assessed if your country is not on its country selector: this does not mean that we do not accept your qualifications. The main official pages are the Newcastle entry requirements page, the Newcastle English language page and the step-by-step guide for international students.

Three numbers decide most of the planning. The first is the grade: AAB for Business Management and Computer Science, AAA for Medicine and Surgery, with the IB equivalents of 34 points and 36 points. The second is English: IELTS 6.5 overall in most cases. The third is money: the international first-year fee for Business Management is £25,750, for Computer Science £31,500 and for Medicine and Surgery £48,600.

Typical grades are an entry gate, not a prediction of who is admitted. The chapters below cover what the gate looks like for each qualification, how English is proven, which dates matter, what the fees are and which scholarships exist.

How Newcastle assesses an undergraduate application

Newcastle reads the whole application: Admissions tutors take into account your whole application, not only the exam grades, and a typical grade does not guarantee an offer.

According to the application decisions page, tutors weigh your predicted and/or achieved grades, the personal statement, the school or college reference, evidence of relevant skills and any special circumstances. The page adds a warning that is worth reading twice: don't assume that you'll receive an offer just because you have or are predicted the grades listed as typical entry requirements.

Offers are not expressed in points. The university states that its tutors do not use the UCAS Tariff points system for conditional offers, so a points total that looks equivalent on paper does not by itself meet an offer. For a school-leaver the practical consequence is that the grade pattern in the offer, for example the A level grades or the IB total, is what you have to deliver.

Contextual offers

Newcastle also looks at the circumstances of the applicant. A contextual offer can be up to three grades lower than the typical entry requirements. Eligibility is checked from data on the UCAS form, so there is no separate application for it.

Entry requirements at Newcastle: which qualifications count

Newcastle accepts a wide range of qualifications, and its list of examples starts with A and AS levels and the International Baccalaureate; anything not listed is assessed individually.

The Newcastle entry requirements page says the university will consider all qualifications that are of a suitable academic level. The examples it names are A and AS levels including International A levels, Scottish qualifications, the International Baccalaureate, the Irish Leaving Certificate, access qualifications, BTEC qualifications and Cambridge Pre-U. For everything else the position is stated plainly: We will consider qualifications that are not listed on an individual basis.

For applicants from abroad the page gives one orientation figure: ABB at A level is typically the minimum required for an undergraduate course, and each degree can set something different. It also tells you where to find the equivalent for your country: the degree pages carry a section for qualifications from outside the UK with a country selector. Some degrees have extra requirements such as work experience or a portfolio, and others require specific subjects at a certain level.

Grades for national certificates are shown through the country selector on each degree page. A Polish, Italian, French, Romanian, Greek, Spanish, German or Dutch certificate is therefore read through the country selector on the page of the degree you want, and the country and region page is the entry point if you want to check whether your country is listed.

How the A level offer is built

Typical offers are written as three grades. The A level page says Newcastle will specify typical entry levels in terms of three grades and does not normally ask for more than three single-award A levels or equivalent. In most cases, we make conditional offers on achievement at the end of Year 13 or the final year at college. A fourth A level is taken into account, but the page says: If you have not taken four A Levels, however, you will not be disadvantaged. Some degrees treat General Studies and Critical Thinking differently: Some exclude General Studies and Critical Thinking from conditional offers.

A level and IB offers by programme

For 2027 entry the three programmes on this page ask for AAB (Business Management, Computer Science) or AAA (Medicine and Surgery) at A level, or 34 points and 36 points in the International Baccalaureate.

Each degree page opens with a box of 2027 entry information. The figures below come from those boxes, and each page states that The entrance requirements and offers below apply to 2027 entry. The IB figure is a total of points; subject and higher-level conditions for the IB sit behind the qualification selector on the degree page, so read them there before you plan your subjects.

Computer Science BSc HonoursAAB34 pointsG400
Medicine and Surgery MB BSAAA36 pointsA100

Grades for individual national certificates and the specific school subjects each programme wants sit behind the selectors on the degree pages, so they are not repeated here. The A and AS levels page adds that some degrees have varying attitudes to General Studies and Critical Thinking, so check the degree page before assuming a subject counts.

Applicants who fall short of a typical offer have a few routes: a contextual offer, which can be up to three grades lower, or a pathway course (see the chapter on pathways below).

Business Management BA Honours at Newcastle for international students

Business Management BA Honours (UCAS code N200) is a 3 years full-time degree with a typical offer of AAB at A level or 34 points in the IB, and the international first-year fee is £25,750.

The next start date is September 2027. The home fee for the same year is £10,050, which is what UK-fee students pay and is shown for comparison only. The degree page describes a course that combines contemporary business practice with research, with modules in the global business environment, management and organisation, digital business and marketing in the first stage, and a choice of specialist modules later.

The page lists a work placement opportunity and a study abroad option. Because fees drop in such a year, it matters for budgeting: you will receive a significant fee reduction for that year on programmes where you can spend a year on a work placement or studying abroad. The page does not state the size of the reduction, so ask the university before planning on a specific number.

Business Management is not on the list of programmes that require an interview. The decisions page names Business Accounting and Finance (Assessment Centre typically in March) as the business programme with an assessment centre, which is a different degree. Source: Business Management BA Honours page.

Computer Science BSc Honours at Newcastle for international students

Computer Science BSc Honours (UCAS code G400) runs for 3 years full time, asks for AAB or 34 points in the IB, and costs £31,500 in the first year for international fee payers.

The degree page describes Java and Python programming, problem solving, hardware and software architecture, databases and the mathematics needed for computing. Mathematics requirements by qualification are shown through the selector on the degree page, so read the level for your certificate there before you choose school subjects.

The page lists a work placement opportunity and a study abroad option, and shows an internship and graduate-destination section with employers such as Siemens, Rolls Royce, the Bank of England, IBM and Accenture. Treat that list as examples of where graduates have worked, not as placement guarantees.

The decisions page names the programmes that need an interview, and Computer Science is not among them. The Computer Science BSc Honours page is the source for the figures in this chapter.

Medicine and Surgery MB BS at Newcastle for international students

Medicine and Surgery MB BS (UCAS code A100) is a 5 years course with a typical offer of AAA or 36 points in the IB, a required UCAT, an interview, and an international first-year fee of £48,600; the 2027 entry application deadline for Medicine and Dentistry, 15 October 2026, has already passed.

The selection process is described in three steps: academic screen, interview and offers. Interviews for Medicine and Surgery are listed for December - January, and the page points to a 2027 admissions policy for the details. Applicants with earlier degrees face an extra condition: applicants who earned an undergraduate degree more than five years ago have to demonstrate continued engagement with ongoing education.

UCAT and age rule

The test is not optional. All applicants applying to study the 5 year A100 programme or the 4 year A101 Medicine programme are required to take the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT). The UCAT threshold is not fixed: it may differ in each admissions cycle because it depends on the scores of the applicants in the current cycle. Newcastle publishes a UCAT thresholds document for previous years on the degree page. The age policy for the A100 programme says students must turn 18 by the end of their first semester.

The deadline logic matters for anyone reading this in autumn 2026. The UCAS date for Medicine and Dentistry for 2027 entry was 15 October 2026, at 18:00 UK time, so that window is closed for September 2027 entry. International graduates should also read the Foundation Programme rule before choosing the course: you are normally required to return to your home country to complete further speciality training after the Foundation Programme. English language at Newcastle: IELTS requirement for undergraduate courses

For most undergraduate courses Newcastle asks for an overall score of IELTS 6.5 with at least IELTS 5.5 in each of the four skills, and individual course pages can ask for more.

The Newcastle English language page says that If English is not your first language you will need to provide a recognised English language test or qualification. The headline figure is the IELTS one, and the page repeats it for visa applicants: IELTS for UKVI (Academic)/IELTS (Academic) overall score of 6.5 with at least IELTS 5.5 in each sub-skill. Writing, reading, speaking and listening are the four skills.

The overall figure is a default, and courses can raise it: Individual undergraduate course pages list if you need an overall IELTS score or sub-scores higher than this. The Newcastle entry requirements page also says that English requirements are listed as part of the entry requirements for each degree. Read the English line on the degree page before booking an exam.

Some practical details from the same page: IELTS One Skill Retakes are accepted from 2025 entry onwards, and test results are normally valid only if you have taken the test within three years of the start of your course and verifiable on the official website.

Other English tests Newcastle accepts: TOEFL, Duolingo, PTE and Cambridge

Newcastle accepts TOEFL iBT at 4.5 on the new scale, Duolingo at 125 overall, PTE Academic and Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency at 176, each with sub-score minimums.

The English page lists the tests below as the ones accepted for applicants who need a student visa. The requirements are typical figures, and a course page can set different ones. Always check the line on the page of your degree.

PTE Academic is given as a conversion: the page lists IELTS 6.5: 70, IELTS 6.0: 65 and IELTS 7.0: 76. The Special Home Edition of TOEFL iBT follows the same scores from 21 January 2026 as the standard test. The page also accepts other English qualifications of limited relevance to most readers, among them the Business English Certificate Higher and Trinity College London Integrated Skills in English, with sub-skill minimums.

The TOEFL change matters if you already hold a score: the page sets one scale for results from 21 January 2026 and another, stated as a score of 90 with skill minimums, for earlier results. The English language page lists both.

English through school qualifications: IB, A level, Abitur, French Baccalaureate and VWO

Newcastle accepts some school qualifications as proof of English: an IB English grade, GCSE or A level English at Grade C, and, for applicants who do not need a visa, national grades such as Grade 12 in English in the French Baccalaureate, Grade 11 in the Abitur and Grade 8 in the Dutch VWO.

The IB route needs a specific English course and level. The English page lists International Baccalaureate English A: Literature at Standard level: 4 or Higher level: 4, English A: Literature and Language at Standard level: 5 or Higher level: 4, and English Language B at Standard level: 6 or Higher level: 5. Each is valid only if the test was taken within three years of the start of the course.

National certificates, valid without a visa

The longer list of national certificates sits under a heading for applicants who do not need a visa, so it applies mainly to readers from the EU and EEA who study without a student visa. The page introduces it with tests if you do not need a visa to study with us, and warns that if a student visa is required, an English Language Interview will be required if the test does not contain all four sub skills. For visa applicants the position is stricter: The tests on this page are the only ones we accept if you need a visa.

Countries such as Poland, Italy, Spain, Romania, Greece, Brazil and Indonesia are not in that list; their applicants prove English with a test such as IELTS, or with another route on the page. Other items on the page are the Grade 5 in English in the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE), 75% in English in the Indian 12th Standard Examination, and the iGCSE English Language Score of C/4. All of these are valid only within three years, except GCSE and A level English, which are accepted within five years of the start of your course.

English exemptions and pathway courses at Newcastle

Some applicants do not need an English test: For most programmes you do not need to prove your English ability if you meet one of the criteria on the English page, and those who miss the academic or English level can use the International Study Centre.

There are two exemption groups. The first is a recent degree: you have been awarded a degree or degree level qualification at or above the recognised standard of a UK bachelor's, master's or doctoral degree, and can show that it was taught and assessed in English. The page ties this to a time window: Within the last three years. The second is nationality: you are a national from one of the countries below, among them Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. Canada carries a note that non-Canadian nationals who studied there must show the degree was taught and assessed in English.

Newcastle also offers free lessons in English for Academic Purposes throughout the year to students once they arrive. These are not an alternative to the entry test, but they are a support for the first year.

Pathway courses through the International Study Centre

The international pathway courses page says the courses are designed for international students who want to study in the UK but do not meet the academic requirements or the English language requirements for direct entry. The entry requirements page states the same route in a sentence: you might be able to take a course run by Newcastle University International Study. The page promises that You’re guaranteed a place on an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, if you meet the success requirements.

How to apply to Newcastle as an international student: UCAS step by step

You apply through the UCAS Hub using the Newcastle institution code N21, with up to 5 course choices, a personal statement and a reference.

The Applying through UCAS page states that All applications for undergraduate degrees are made online through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS). The UCAS online application system opens in September for entry the following year, and you can fill it in in stages.

If you apply through an agent, the degree pages state that International students can apply through an agent. Newcastle application deadlines for 2027 entry

For September 2027 entry the Medicine and Dentistry deadline was 15 October 2026, most other courses have an equal consideration date of 13 January 2027, and the final UCAS deadline is 30 June 2027.

The dates below are the ones the step-by-step guide for international students gives for applicants starting in 2027. Newcastle's phrase for January is an equal consideration date, which means applications that arrive by then are treated alike. Late applications are not refused automatically: Applications submitted after this date are automatically entered into Clearing.

Two more rules affect planning. Newcastle will consider applicants who wish to defer entry by one year, and you should show on your UCAS application how you expect to spend the year. After you apply: tests, interviews, offers and Clearing

Most subjects ask for no interview: Most subject areas don't need applicants to attend an interview, and the programmes that do are named on the decisions page.

On the application decisions page the programmes with interviews include Business Accounting and Finance, Contemporary and Popular Music, Dental Surgery, Dental Therapy, Dietetics, Fine Art, Medicine and Surgery and Pharmacy. For Medicine and Surgery the interview period is December - January, and the course also needs the UCAT (see the Medicine chapter). Business Accounting and Finance uses an assessment centre, typically in March.

Outcomes arrive through UCAS. A conditional offer means you still have to meet requirements, usually exam results. If you applied by 13 January 2027, universities must make offers by 12 May 2027. If no offer arrives, UCAS Extra opens on 25 February 2027. Clearing opens on 02 July 2027; during that time you can apply to Newcastle through Clearing by either applying to the University directly or through UCAS.

Accepting an offer means choosing a firm and an insurance choice in the UCAS Hub. Once you hold an offer, Newcastle invites you to an offer holder experience day, where you can meet current students and staff.

Newcastle tuition fees for international students: 2027 entry

International tuition fees are set per degree, and for 2027 entry the first-year fee is £25,750 for Business Management, £31,500 for Computer Science and £48,600 for Medicine and Surgery.

The tuition fees page says that Tuition fee information for international students is set out on our individual degree pages. Fees are due every year, and they differ by degree: Tuition fees are usually payable for each year of your study. Expect them to move: you should expect the tuition fee to increase in each subsequent academic year, subject to government regulations on fee increases and in line with inflation.

International fee, Year 1 (2027 entry)
Business Management BA Honours£25,750
Computer Science BSc Honours£31,500
Medicine and Surgery MB BS£48,600
Home-fee students pay £10,050 in 2027/28; the figures above are for international fee payers.

Payment is in two parts: 50 per cent of your annual tuition fees in September and the rest in the following January. International fee-paying students who pay in full get a 2% early payment discount. If a sponsor pays, you will need to provide evidence. Some degrees have additional costs that tuition fees do not cover, and a placement or study-abroad year has a reduced fee.

Fee status for EU students

EU students are not automatically on home fees: settled or pre-settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme leads to the Home rate, while EU students without settled or pre-settled status will normally be charged fees at the ‘International’ rate. The Home fee itself is £10,050 in 2027/28, up from £9,790 in 2026/27. Newcastle describes life in the city as cheaper than London: up to 65% cheaper for rents and living costs, according to a QS ranking the university cites.

Newcastle scholarships for international and EU undergraduates

The Vice-Chancellor's International Scholarship for 2027 entry is worth £7,000 per academic year towards tuition, and applicants from many countries, including all EU member states, are eligible.

The scholarship starts in September 2027 and runs for the duration of the course. Candidates must be domiciled in one of the listed countries or regions: the list includes Algeria, Brazil, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Turkey, Vietnam and all EU member states. Saudi Arabia is not on that list. Applicants domiciled in Turkey can only be considered if they are self-funding.

There is no separate form: Eligible candidates will automatically be considered as part of the academic application. The conditions are a place on an eligible course at the city centre campus for 2027/28, international fee status, and a UCAS application by the equal consideration date of January 2027. The page also says that offers made by March 2027 must be accepted as firm or insurance choice by May 2027. Some courses are excluded, listed in a PDF on the scholarship page.

EU-domiciled students have a separate award. The Vice-Chancellor's EU Scholarship for 2026 entry was worth 25% of the international fee, and the eligibility rule was domiciled in an EU member state; the page describes 2026 entry (2026/27, the latest published). Newcastle says Over 1,000 scholarships are available for International and EU students, and an International Family Discount applies to students with a close family member who has graduated from or is now studying at Newcastle University.

Student visa support and arrival at Newcastle

Newcastle runs a visa support team for prospective students, and the page states: Before applying, you should read our information on applying for a student visa.

The visa support page says the Visa Support team offers dedicated visa support to registered and prospective students and replies to enquiries within 2 working days. It explains that most UK visas are now eVisas and that a student on a Student visa must make sure you can access your eVisa before travelling. The English page matters here too: for visa applicants only the tests on that page are accepted.

Arrival is organised around International Welcome Week, in which students also complete their registration. Fees are paid as part of registration, as set out in the fees chapter. The university also publishes living costs, accommodation and additional course costs pages, which should be read together with the fee figures above before a final budget is made.
