RMIT admission at a glance
RMIT University in Melbourne takes international undergraduate applications for Semester 1 2027 until 3 March 2027, and the programme pages ask for the VCE or an equivalent qualification plus programme prerequisites. English proof for undergraduate entry starts at IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0.
Applications for international students are open all year round, and RMIT warns on its programme pages that applications may close early if all places are filled. Tuition for the three programmes covered here is listed in Australian dollars: AU$45,120 for Computer Science, AU$47,040 for Business and AU$48,960 for Engineering (Honours), each as labelled on the page.

Programmes covered in this report
This report covers three Bachelor programmes that international applicants commonly look at: Computer Science, Business and Engineering (Honours). RMIT does not offer every subject of a broad university, so check that your subject exists before you plan around it.
The Bachelor of Computer Science runs full-time for visa holders, and its course page lists City Campus. The Bachelor of Business has intakes in February, July, October. The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) lets you pick a branch of engineering after the first year, according to the course page.
Medicine and law are not covered here because this report does not hold RMIT's international entry rules for them.
How international applicants apply to RMIT
International applicants can apply directly to RMIT, with support from an approved agent if they wish, or through VTAC (the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre) if they are completing an Australian school-leaving year or an IB in Australia or New Zealand.
Applicants who apply through VTAC are bound to its offer rounds: the December round on 23 December 2026 is for VCE and selected interstate school-leavers only, and the international rounds then run from 12 January 2027 to 16 February 2027.
After the January round 2 offers go out, all international applicants, including VTAC applicants, can apply directly to any RMIT course, although places may be limited. An applicant from abroad with a non-Australian qualification normally applies directly.
Entry requirements: VCE or an equivalent qualification
Each of the three programmes states the same base rule: applicants must have completed the Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE) or an equivalent qualification, and RMIT ranks applicants for competitive courses by merit.
RMIT's programme pages do not set out an IB points score, an A-level grade offer or an Abitur grade for these courses. They state the VCE standard and the prerequisites, and treat other national qualifications as equivalents. If your certificate is not obviously equivalent, ask RMIT's international advisors before you apply.
Prerequisites by programme
- Computer Science: a VCE study score of at least 25 in English other than EAL, or at least 27 in EAL, and at least 20 in General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics, or equivalent studies.
- Business: the same English study score of 25, or 27 in EAL, or equivalent.
- Engineering (Honours): English at 25, or 27 in EAL, and at least 20 in a mathematics subject. Without Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics, you must also complete Introduction to Engineering Mathematics first.
Applicants who already hold higher education study can apply on that record: Computer Science and Engineering ask for at least four graded courses at Australian undergraduate level or an overseas equivalent, and the selection rank comes from your GPA.
IB, A-levels and IGCSE: what RMIT states about English
RMIT states English-language benchmarks for the IB Diploma, Cambridge IGCSE and International A Levels, not a points offer: an IB Diploma needs 4 in English A: Literature at HL or SL, among other options.
| Qualification | English benchmark |
|---|---|
| IB Diploma | 4 in English A: Literature, HL or SL; or 4 in English A: Language and Literature, HL or SL; or 4 in English B at HL; or 5 in English B at SL |
| Cambridge and recognised IGCSE | B / 6 or better in English - Second Language (the page also lists a lower benchmark for First Language) |
| Cambridge and recognised International A Levels | a minimum C grade in an A Level subject taught and examined solely in English, excluding language subjects, Mathematics and Music |
For A Levels, the listed subjects are only considered if no other English language or relevant subjects were taken at A level.
These benchmarks show that your schooling in English satisfies the language rule. They are not a statement of the grades that win a place in a competitive course.
Qualifications from Germany and the Netherlands
For German and Dutch applicants RMIT lists English benchmarks on its Europe page: Abitur with at least 7 points in English or VWO with at least 8 in English.
Germany: Fachhochschulreife with at least grade 3 in English, or Abitur with at least 7 points in English, or a DAAD language test with a minimum of B in all sections, completed within 5 years before the programme starts.
Netherlands: VWO with at least 8 in English or HAVO with a minimum grade of 8, both completed within 5 years before the programme starts. The page also allows English proficiency to be shown by a tertiary programme taught mainly in English.
Applicants from Italy, France, Poland, Romania, Spain, Greece, Turkey, Brazil, Indonesia, Vietnam, Japan and other countries should check RMIT's recognised qualifications pages for their region or ask an advisor, because those pages are separate from the two countries above.
English language requirements for undergraduate entry
RMIT lists IELTS Academic 6.5 with no band below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE Academic 58 and Cambridge C1 Advanced 176 as the general undergraduate guide, and individual courses can ask for more.
| Test | Overall | Sections |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS (Academic) | 6.5 | no band less than 6.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 79 | minimum 13 Reading, 12 Listening, 18 Speaking, 21 Writing |
| PTE (Academic) | 58 | no communication band less than 50 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | 176 | no less than 169 in any component |
RMIT only accepts the following English language proficiency tests for admission: IELTS (Academic), TOEFL iBT, PTE (Academic) and Cambridge B2 First, C1 Advanced and C2 Proficiency, with OET for selected health programmes. Always compare with the course page, since minimum scores may differ between courses.
English test rules: validity, formats and the 2027 route
The test must have been completed within two years of your RMIT course start date.
- RMIT does not accept results from at-home or online tests for international students.
- IELTS (General) is not accepted.
- TOEFL iBT tests taken on or after 21 January 2026 must be the TOEFL iBT Australia test, and results on the 1-6 scale are not accepted.
- For the 2027 intake, applicants can meet the minimum English requirements through an approved English language proficiency test at the required scores.
Bachelor of Computer Science: international entry
The Bachelor of Computer Science asks for a VCE English score of 25 (27 in EAL) and a mathematics score of 20, or equivalent studies, with AU$45,120 tuition for 2027.
The page shows an entry score of ATAR 75.10 for the Semester 1 2027 application, and RMIT says entry to this course is competitive. A study score of 25 in any Information Technology, Mathematics or Science subject equals 2 aggregate points per study, with an overall maximum of 8 points for applicants with recent secondary education.
Applicants with a selection task or credit assessment should submit by 24 February. If International Admissions asks for an interview, it must take place by 28 January and the offer be accepted by 1 February, per the Semester 1 2027 page.
Bachelor of Business: international entry
The Bachelor of Business lists a 2027 Guaranteed ATAR of 70.00 and AU$47,040 annual tuition, with intakes in February, July, October.
The same base rule applies as for the other programmes: VCE or an equivalent qualification with an English study score of 25, or 27 in EAL. RMIT adds that eligible applicants are ranked and selected in order of merit.
A Semester 3 intake was open for 2026: the page gave an application deadline of 14 October 2026, which has passed.
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): international entry
The Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) states a 2027 Guaranteed ATAR of 75.00 and prerequisites of English at 25, or 27 in EAL and mathematics at 20.
If you receive an ATAR equal to or above the guarantee and meet the course prerequisites, RMIT guarantees an offer in the course. Applicants without Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics complete Introduction to Engineering Mathematics before Engineering Mathematics.
Entry is competitive, and higher education applicants need at least four graded courses at undergraduate level. The tuition figure is AU$48,960 (2027 total) as labelled on the page; the page does not say whether that is per year, so confirm with RMIT before budgeting.
Application deadlines and intakes for 2027
Semester 1 2027 closes on 3 March 2027 with acceptance by 5 March 2027, while Semester 2 deadlines are still marked TBC.
Applicants who need a student visa are recommended to apply and accept offers at least 4-8 weeks before the programme starts, so the practical deadline is earlier than the formal one.
Selection scores: what the ATAR figures mean
RMIT publishes ATAR figures per programme: 75.10 for Computer Science, 70.00 for Business and 75.00 for Engineering (Honours).
| Programme | 2027 figure | 2026 figure |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science | ATAR 75.10 | not shown |
| Business | Guaranteed ATAR 70.00 | ATAR 67.00 |
| Engineering (Honours) | Guaranteed ATAR 75.00 | ATAR 73.00 |
The ATAR is the Australian ranking used for local school-leaving students. RMIT assigns other applicants a selection rank comparable to an ATAR, and an official guaranteed ATAR is a gate for an automatic offer, not the level of students typically admitted.
Tuition for international students
International tuition for 2027 is listed at AU$45,120 a year for Computer Science, AU$47,040 a year for Business and AU$48,960 for Engineering (Honours), labelled as a 2027 total.
Living costs, health cover and student services fees are separate from tuition; check RMIT's fees pages for the current amounts before you plan a budget.
Student visa basics
International student visa holders can only study full-time, and RMIT recommends applying and accepting an offer at least 4-8 weeks before the start date.
RMIT's page tells applicants to plan visa processing time into the application. Visa rules are set by the Australian government; check the official visa pages for the current requirements.
Next steps for an applicant from abroad
Start with the programme's own page, because prerequisites, English minimums and deadlines differ by course.
- Check the course page for the English prerequisite and any mathematics prerequisite.
- Book an English test that meets IELTS 6.5 or the equivalent and falls within two years of the start date.
- Apply directly, or through VTAC if your qualification qualifies, and aim for well before 3 March 2027.
- Ask RMIT's international advisors if your qualification is not obviously equivalent to the VCE.
