University of Southampton admission at a glance for autumn 2027
A Southampton undergraduate degree is applied for through UCAS, and the university sets each offer as the grades of an A-level course: your qualification must be equivalent to the A level requirements of your chosen course. For Computer Science the entry-requirements section for the academic year 2027-2028 asks for AAB including mathematics, and an international student pays £33,000 a year for it.
Southampton is one of the universities where the answer depends on the course, not on a single university-wide score. This report follows four courses that carry the admissions-relevant text for economics, computer science, law and medicine, and the country pages the university publishes for Italy, France, Poland, Germany, Spain, Greece and Romania. Everything below is taken from the university's own pages, according to the page as of October 2026, unless a sentence names the academic year it applies to.
The table sets the four courses next to each other before the detail. Read the offer column as the lowest grades the university will make an offer on for that course, and the IB column as the Diploma equivalent of the same gate.
The pages that follow cover the application route, the way a foreign certificate is converted, each course offer, the IB, seven country pages, the foundation route, English, tests and fees.
Five facts for an applicant from abroad
- Route: every first-year full-time undergraduate applicant applies through UCAS.
- Grades: the country pages convert your certificate into the A-level grades of the course, for example grades between 12 (Assez Bien) and 15 (Très Bien) for the French Baccalauréat.
- English: overall 6.5 with 6.0 in each skill in IELTS for Computer Science; Law asks 6.5 in every skill.
- Tests: LNAT is not required for Law, while Medicine BM6 uses the UCAT.
- Medicine BM6: international applicants are NOT eligible.
What the pages do not give you
The course pages state typical offers and entry conditions, not an acceptance rate, an average of admitted students or a cut-off score. An offer line is a gate. Meeting it makes you eligible for an offer; it does not tell you how competitive the year was, and the university decides each application on the whole file, including the personal statement and reference that the entry-requirements page lists.
Who this report is for
The reader is an applicant outside the UK who holds a school-leaving certificate from one of the seven countries with a Southampton country page, or an IB Diploma, or A-levels, and who wants to know which grade the certificate must reach, which English proof to bring and what the first year costs. It does not replace the course page, which is the only place the exact offer for your course is printed.
| Course | Typical offer | IB Diploma | Tuition, EU and international |
|---|---|---|---|
| Computer Science BSc | AAB | 34 points | £33,000 |
| Economics BSc | AAB | 34 points | £28,300 |
| Law LLB | AAA | 36 points | £28,400 |
| Medicine BM6 | BBB | 30 points | not available |
How to apply to Southampton from abroad and which dates the university publishes
You apply in one place: any student applying for the first year of a full-time undergraduate course must apply through UCAS. The university does not need your English test or final results first, because you can apply if you have not yet completed your qualifications or met our English language requirements.
The step-by-step guide on the university site runs from choosing a course to accommodation and visa. For dates, it sends you on: its UCAS guidance covers key dates and deadlines, so the closing date of your course is the one to confirm there before you register. Among the four courses here, only Medicine BM6 states a closing date, covered in the tests chapter.
The steps the university lists
- Choose a course in the course finder and read its entry-requirements section; for non-UK qualifications use the country information pages.
- Check the fee category: the lower UK (home) fee and the higher International (overseas) fee, where the Admissions Team will decide your fee status.
- Apply through UCAS; a conditional offer is possible because we could still make you a conditional offer, if applicable.
- Offer holders are invited to visits: Offer Holder Visit Days usually take place from January to April.
- Apply for the student visa: you can apply for a visa when you receive an unconditional offer.
Education agents
The university notes that many applicants choose to use the services of an education agent and publishes a list of University-approved agents next to the British Council guide. The application itself still goes through UCAS.
What to have ready before you start
- The course page open, so you know the typical offer and the subjects the course names.
- The country page of your certificate, so you know which of your grades is read as which A-level grade.
- A plan for English: a test date, or the school qualification that counts.
- A first answer on your fee status, which the university decides after you apply.
None of these must be finished before you apply, because the university lets you apply and receive a conditional offer first. They matter because a conditional offer names the grades and the English band you still have to reach, and your plan should be built backwards from them.
How Southampton sets entry requirements for a foreign certificate
Southampton does not publish one national score per country. You need to achieve a grade in your qualification that is equivalent to the A level requirements of your chosen course, and the country page tells you which grade of your certificate matches which A-level grade.
Accepted qualifications are broad: the entry-requirements page lists A levels, BTECs, Scottish Highers, T Levels and International and European Baccalaureate, many European and international qualifications. A certificate that is not on a course page can be queried with the Admissions team before you apply.
Typical offers are gates, not the level of admitted students
The grades below are the offers each course states for the academic year 2027-2028. They are the minimum the university will make an offer on, not a description of the students who actually enrol, and several courses make a lower offer to some applicants through contextual admissions.
Contextual offers
The Admissions team looks at the information in your application and determines whether we can make you a reduced offer. You do not send extra documents for this. The course pages repeat that applicants flagged in this way receive an offer lower than the typical one.
Courses that add a selector
For some courses an academic selector reads the application and decides whether you attend an interview or selection event before an offer.
If your certificate is not listed
If you hold a qualification that the course pages do not list, the entry-requirements page tells you to write to the Admissions team at admissions@southampton.ac.uk. Do this before you pay for a test or choose a course, because the answer decides which conversion table applies to you.
Resits
The same page says resits are accepted for all subjects except Medicine, where the Medicine course pages hold their own selection policy. For an international applicant this is mostly background, since the BM6 course is closed to non-UK students.
Southampton A-level offers for Computer Science, Economics, Law and Medicine
For entry in the academic year 2027-2028 the A-level offers are AAB including mathematics (minimum grade A) for Computer Science, AAB including Mathematics for Economics and AAA for Law; international applicants convert their certificate to these grades using the country tables in this report.
| Course | A-level offer | Subject condition |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science BSc | AAB | mathematics, minimum grade A |
| Economics BSc | AAB | Mathematics |
| Law LLB | AAA | none stated in the offer line |
| Medicine BM6 | BBB or above | Biology and one additional science, see the Medicine rule below |
GCSE English and mathematics
All three non-medical courses ask for GCSE-level English. Computer Science and Law write it as GCSE English language (or GCSE English) and mathematics at minimum grade 4/C; Economics asks GCSE English language (or GCSE English) at minimum grade 4/C. The university accepts equivalents, which is why the English page converts national certificates (see the English chapters).
No mathematics at advanced level
Computer Science states the alternative itself: applicants who have not studied mathematics at A-level can apply for the Engineering/Physics/Mathematics Foundation Year. The foundation chapter explains how each country page treats that year.
Medicine BM6 subjects
The BM6 page requires applicants must offer BBB or above, we do not accept grade or tariff equivalents to BBB. This course is also open to Home students only, as the tests chapter shows.
How the three courses compare
Computer Science and Economics share the headline offer, AAB, and both ask for mathematics inside it. Law is one grade higher at AAA and, unlike the other two, names no subject in the offer line. A student with strong mathematics and a slightly lower overall profile therefore reads the Computer Science and Economics rows, while a student with a very high overall grade and no mathematics at advanced level reads the Law row or the foundation route.
Each course page also prints offers for other UK qualifications (BTEC, Scottish and Welsh qualifications, T Levels, the Irish Leaving Certificate). They are not repeated here because a student from abroad is normally read through the country page or the IB.
IB Diploma requirements at Southampton by course
The IB Diploma is accepted on every course page: Computer Science asks Pass, with 34 points overall, with 17 points required at Higher Level including 6 at Higher Level in Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches) or 7 at Higher Level in Mathematics (Applications and Interpretation), and Law asks Pass, with 36 points overall with 18 points at Higher Level.
| Course | Total points | Higher Level condition |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science BSc | 34 points | 17 at Higher Level, including 6 or 7 in Higher Level mathematics |
| Economics BSc | 34 points | 17 at Higher Level, including 5 from Higher Level Mathematics |
| Law LLB | 36 points | 18 points at Higher Level |
| Medicine BM6 | 30 points | 15 at Higher Level, with 5 in HL Biology |
The range the country pages quote
The country pages describe the IB range for undergraduate entry as an IB score of between 30 and 38 points depending on the course, and the European Baccalaureate as between 74% and 85%, or higher. The course figures above sit inside that range.
IB English
IB candidates can also meet the English requirement without a test: the English page accepts IB English A courses at Standard Level or Higher Level Grade 4.
Comparing the IB with the A-level offer
The IB figure is a pair of conditions: a total and a Higher Level part. Computer Science and Economics both ask 34 points in total with 17 at Higher Level, while Law raises both numbers to 36 points overall with 18 points at Higher Level. Mathematics sits in both: Computer Science names 6 at Higher Level in Mathematics (Analysis and Approaches) or 7 at Higher Level in Mathematics (Applications and Interpretation), and Economics names 5 points from Higher Level Mathematics.
Applicants who did not take the required subjects at Higher Level are pointed to the foundation year on the Computer Science page.
Southampton entry requirements for the Italian Diploma di Esame di Stato
The Italy page says you need a Diploma di Esame di Stato with grades between 80 to 95, the minimum depending on the course. The same diploma is the base for the foundation year, which asks a minimum overall grade of 84.
Read the table against the course: Computer Science and Economics ask AAB, which the page converts to AAB: 88, and Law asks AAA, which is AAA: 92. The university states the table as the overall equivalency for the diploma, according to the page as of October 2026.
Alternatives to the diploma
An Italian student can also meet the offer with UK A levels with grades from BBB to A*AA, or an International Baccalaureate (IB) score of between 30 and 38 points. You must also meet any listed subject requirements on the course page.
A worked example
A student aiming for Computer Science or Economics, which ask AAB, looks up the AAB row and finds AAB: 88. A student aiming for Law, which asks AAA, finds AAA: 92. A diploma that only reaches BBB: 80 sits below the offer of all three non-medical courses in this report, which is why the university tells you to find the page of your own course for the exact requirement.
What to do next
Check your final diploma mark against the table, then open the page of your course and find the grade it names. If the mark is close to the line, ask the Admissions team before you rely on rounding, because the table prints single figures and not ranges. English for Italian applicants is shown by an accepted test or another listed qualification, for example IB English, because the school-qualification table on the English page does not list Italian certificates.
Southampton entry requirements for the French Baccalauréat
The France page asks for a French Baccalauréat with grades between 12 (Assez Bien) and 15 (Très Bien), typically, or avec Option Internationale, with grades between 11 and 15; the exact minimum depends on the course.
| A-level grade | Equivalent on the country page |
|---|---|
| A*AA | A*AA: 16 |
| AAA | AAA: 15 |
| AAB | AAB: 14 |
| ABB | ABB: 13 |
| BBB | BBB: 12 |
| BBC | BBC: 12 |
| BCC | BCC: 11 |
| CCC | CCC: 11 |
Individual subjects are converted separately: A*: 16, A: 15, B: 14, C: 14. A Baccalauréat Technologique is considered on a case-by-case basis.
Foundation year
Without the specialty subjects for direct entry the foundation year asks a minimum overall score of 13 or higher in the French Baccalauréat, plus proficiency in maths, or 12 or higher with a completed Baccalauréat Français International or Option Internationale.
A worked example
Computer Science and Economics, which ask AAB, correspond to AAB: 14 overall, and Law, which asks AAA, to AAA: 15. A Baccalauréat graded BBB: 12 matches the BBB row and therefore falls short of all three non-medical courses.
What to do next
French applicants have two ways to show English without a test, both on the English page: the Baccalauréat Français International English paper at grade 11 and, for the European Baccalaureate, a 7.5 where English is compulsory or a full option. A standard Baccalauréat does not appear in that table, so a holder of it shows English by an accepted test or another listed qualification, for example IB English.
Southampton entry requirements for the Polish Matura
The Poland page asks for Swiadectwo Dorjzalosci or Matura, with 3 extended level subjects in the 7th, 8th or 9th Stanine, so the Extended Level subjects, not the Basic Level ones, carry the weight.
The page states the conversion according to the page as of October 2026: a course that asks AAB needs 2 with a score in the 8th stanine and 1 in the 7th stanine, and AAA needs 3 in the 8th stanine or higher.
The practical reading is that three Extended Level subjects are needed, since every row of the table is written for three of them, and the stanine of each subject decides the row.
Foundation year
Without advanced maths and physics: Polish Matura with 3 Extended Level subjects including 1 subject with a score in the 8th stanine and 2 subjects in the 7th stanine.
What to do next
Polish applicants sit the Matura at Extended Level in the subjects the course names, so choose those subjects with the course page open. English is shown by an accepted test or another listed qualification, for example IB English, because the school-qualification table on the English page does not list the Matura.
Southampton entry requirements for the German Abitur
The Germany page asks for Abitur with an overall grade between 2.2 and 1.4, and at least 12 or 13 out of 15 in advanced level (Leistungskurse) subjects or subjects relevant to the undergraduate course.
| A-level grade | Equivalent on the country page |
|---|---|
| A*AA | A*AA: 1.6 or lower |
| AAA | AAA: 1.8 or lower |
| AAB | AAB: 2.0 or lower |
| ABB | ABB: 2.1 or lower |
| BBB | BBB: 2.3 or lower |
| BBC | BBC: 2.5 or lower |
| BCC | BCC: 2.6 or lower |
Subjects are converted two ways: A*: 14 out of 15 in the Leistungskurse, or 1.5 in the Abitur; A: 13 out of 15, or 1.8; B: 12 out of 15, or 2.3; C: 11 out of 15, or 2.8. The page prints BCC twice, at 2.6 or lower and at BCC: 2.8 or lower.
A worked example
For AAB (Computer Science, Economics) the overall Abitur grade must be AAB: 2.0 or lower, and for AAA (Law) AAA: 1.8 or lower. A lower number is a better German grade, which is the opposite of the A-level direction.
What to do next
German applicants can reach the English requirement through school: Abitur - English (or 2/6 in English Language as a Leistungkurs) Grade 11 counts. For those who took it, that removes the cost of a test.
Southampton entry requirements for the Spanish Bachillerato
The Spain page asks for a Titulo de Bachillerato, with a minimum overall grade of 7.5 to 8.5, depending on the course.
| A-level grade | Equivalent on the country page |
|---|---|
| A*AA | A*AA: 8.5 |
| AAA | AAA: 8.5 |
| AAB | AAB: 8.0 |
| ABB | ABB: 8.0 |
| BBB | BBB: 7.5 |
| BBC | BBC: 7.0 |
| BCC | BCC: 7.0 |
| CCC | CCC: 6.5 |
Individual subjects: A*: 9.0, A: 9.0, B: 8.0, C: 7.0. The IB and European Baccalaureate alternatives on the Spain page are an IB score from 30 to 38 points, or a European Baccalaureate score of between 74% and 85%.
What to do next
The Spanish table gives decimal marks, so read each course against its own row rather than against the headline range. English is shown by an accepted test or another listed qualification, for example IB English, since the English page does not list a Spanish school certificate.
Southampton entry requirements for the Greek Apolytirion and Pan-Hellenics
The Greece page accepts the Apolytirion (Secondary School Leaving Certificate), with the minimum set by the course, and for engineering and physical sciences degrees you must also have achieved the required Pan-Hellenic subject grades.
| A-level grade | Equivalent on the country page |
|---|---|
| A*AA | A*AA: 19.2 |
| AAA | AAA: 19 |
| AAB | AAB: 18.7 |
| ABB | ABB: 18.3 |
| BBB | BBB: 18 |
| BBC | BBC: 17.7 |
| BCC | BCC: 17.3 |
| CCC | CCC: 17 |
Subject grades convert as A*: 20, A: 19, B: 18, C: 17. The Pan-Hellenic equivalents are A: 17.5, B: 15.
Foundation years
The engineering, maths and physics foundation year asks an overall grade of at least 18 out of 20 in the Apolytirion, with 15 or more in maths and physics for Pan-Hellenics; the OnCampus foundation programmes ask an overall grade of at least 17 out of 20.
What to do next
A Greek applicant for an engineering or physical sciences degree needs two things the others do not: the Apolytirion mark and the Pan-Hellenic subject marks. Collect both results before choosing between the direct route and the foundation year. English is shown by an accepted test or another listed qualification, for example IB English.
Southampton entry requirements for the Romanian Diploma de Bacalaureat
The Romania page asks for a Diploma de Bacalaureat with a minimum overall grade of 8 or 9 and a grade between 8 and 10 in subjects relevant to the chosen undergraduate course.
| A-level grade | Equivalent on the country page |
|---|---|
| A*AA / AAA | A*AA: a grade of 9 overall, and a grade 9 in the required subjects |
| AAB / ABB | AAB: a grade of 8.5 overall, and a grade between 8-9 in the required subjects |
| BBB | BBB: a grade of 8 overall, and a grade 8 in the required subjects |
That is the whole conversion the page prints, according to the page as of October 2026. For the foundation year the page asks an overall grade of 8.5.
What to do next
The Romanian conversion couples an overall mark with a mark in the required subjects, so a high average alone does not meet a row. Read the subject line of the course page first, then check both columns of the table. English is shown by an accepted test or another listed qualification, for example IB English.
Southampton foundation years for applicants who miss maths or physics
Southampton has a one-year route in front of the degree: the Foundation year for engineering, maths or physics prepares you to take up one of 19 undergraduate degrees in engineering, maths or physics. Each country page sets its own entry grade for it.
| Certificate | Foundation-year entry |
|---|---|
| Italian Diploma | minimum overall grade of 84 |
| French Baccalauréat | overall score of 13 or higher |
| Polish Matura | 1 subject in the 8th stanine and 2 in the 7th |
| Greek Apolytirion | 18 out of 20 overall |
| Romanian Bacalaureat | overall grade of 8.5 |
The Computer Science page points here for applicants who have not studied mathematics at A-level. For business, humanities, science and other degrees the country pages name the OnCampus foundation programmes run by the university's partner; they include English language study and secure a place on the chosen degree on completion. The Germany and Spain pages list the same two routes without an entry grade.
Choosing between direct entry and the foundation year
Direct entry needs the course offer on your certificate; the foundation year has its own stated entry grade and adds a year before the three-year degree. For most readers of this report the practical question is mathematics: if the course page names it and your school did not teach it at advanced level, the foundation year is the route the university itself points to.
English requirement at Southampton: IELTS scores for each course
Computer Science and Economics ask IELTS overall 6.5, with 6.0 in reading, writing, speaking and listening, and Law asks 6.5 overall and 6.5 in each of the four skills.
Who needs no test
Applicants from a majority English-speaking country do not need to provide evidence of their English language proficiency, but still need the academic standard, which the page puts at GCSE English Language at grade 4 or C (or equivalent).
How old a result may be
A test must be taken in person at an approved centre unless it is listed as online, and awarded within 2 years of your course start date. Other proofs are valid for three years, see the next chapter.
Falling short
If your English is below the level, you may book a pre-sessional English language course in the summer before the first semester. You can also apply first: you can apply if you have not yet met our English language requirements.
Planning the English proof
Work backwards from the validity rule. A test must be no more than two years old at your course start, so a test taken too early may not count for an autumn start. A school qualification is valid within 3 years of the course start date. If the proof is missing when you apply, the conditional offer is where it is set.
English tests and school qualifications Southampton accepts instead of IELTS
Southampton accepts a wide list of tests, including IELTS Academic, TOEFL iBT, Duolingo English Test, LanguageCert and Pearson PTE Academic, each translated into an English band from A to I; your offer letter names the band.
| Skill | A | B | C | D | E | F | G | H | I |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Overall | 6.0 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| Listening | 5.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| Reading | 5.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
| Writing | 5.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 6.5 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 6.5 |
| Speaking | 5.5 | 5.5 | 6.0 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 6.0 | 6.5 | 7.0 | 7.0 |
For the Duolingo English Test the overall score runs N/A N/A 120 120 120 N/A 130 130 130 across the bands, and the page says the scores must be reached in individual sub-scores.
School qualifications that count
UK qualifications meet the requirement if awarded within three years: your qualification must have been awarded within 3 years of your course start date. For European certificates the table lists Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway and Sweden, plus the European Baccalaureate: a French BFI English at grade 11, a German Abitur English at grade 11, a Dutch VWO English at grade 8, and the European Baccalaureate at 7.5 where English is compulsory or a full option. The table does not list Italian, Polish, Spanish, Greek or Romanian certificates, so applicants from those countries show English by an accepted test or another listed qualification, for example IB English.
IB candidates are covered too, see the IB chapter.
Reading the band table
The band table gives the minimum for each of the four skills and the overall score. Band C, for example, needs 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each skill, which matches the profile the Computer Science page prints. The course page prints the IELTS figures directly, so you do not have to find the band yourself.
Admission tests and interviews at Southampton, and why Medicine BM6 is closed to international students
Southampton sets entrance tests course by course: for some specific degree courses entry can include an admissions test or exam, audition, interview or portfolio, and the course page says which. Of the four courses in this report, Law states LNAT is not required for our programmes.
The entry-requirements page adds that for some subjects you may need to attend an interview or selection event and that you should check the course page. The Computer Science and Economics course pages in this report list no admissions test among their entry requirements.
Medicine BM6
The BM6 widening-participation course is the one that combines UCAT, interview and a restricted applicant pool. It states only Home students are eligible; international applicants and graduate applicants are NOT eligible. Eligible applicants must sit the UCAT test before the 15th October UCAS deadline, then applicants are ranked by UCAT score and the top candidates are invited to a selection day with an interview and a group task. The fee line confirms it: this course is not available to EU and international students.
The standard five-year Medicine course is outside this report, so an international medical applicant should confirm eligibility with the Admissions team before relying on the BM6 rule above.
Mature applicants
The university supports mature students, usually aged 21 or over (23 for Law), who may be invited to an interview with an Admissions Tutor.
What to ask the Admissions team
Three questions are worth sending in writing: whether your course uses a selector, whether an interview or test applies to applicants from your country, and whether your fee status is home or overseas. The enquiries address printed on the course pages answers all three.
Southampton tuition fees for international undergraduates
For the courses in this report the stated annual tuition for EU and international students is £33,000 for Computer Science, £28,300 for Economics and £28,400 for Law, against £10,050 for UK students on the same courses.
| Course | UK students | EU and international students |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science BSc | £10,050 | £33,000 |
| Economics BSc | £10,050 | £28,300 |
| Law LLB | £10,050 | £28,400 |
| Medicine BM6 | £10,050 | not available |
The course pages state the fee under "Fees for a year's study" without a year, so treat the figures as the latest published ones and confirm the 2027-2028 amount when you apply. Which fee you pay is decided by the university: the Admissions Team will decide your fee status based on relevant fees regulations.
Funding for international students
The international funding page lists international scholarships and the International Student Support Fund, a single discretionary payment for unexpected financial difficulty. The university sets out scholarship amounts on its scholarship pages.
Visa
Students who are not British or Irish citizens may need a visa; you can apply for a visa when you receive an unconditional offer.
Reading the fee line
The three non-medical courses sit in two price bands: Economics and Law are priced at £28,300 and £28,400, while Computer Science is priced at £33,000. The UK figure, £10,050, is the same on every page, so the gap is the premium for overseas fee status. The fee lines do not say whether the amount is fixed for the length of the degree, so ask before you budget for three years.
Southampton: frequently asked questions
