University of Toronto admission at a glance
You apply to the University of Toronto through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre, then finish the file in an applicant portal; for 2027 entry the Engineering and Arts & Science deadline is January 15, with December 1 as the date to have documents in if you applied early.
The first step is the application through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC). The initial application only asks for basic biographical details and your program choices; transcripts and the rest follow in the portal. Each program area is a separate application, and you can apply to up to three different program areas.
Two rules catch applicants from abroad. Every applicant presents a senior-level English course, and the result counts in the admission average, on top of any English test. And calculus is required for most math, science, computer science and commerce programs, so precalculus is not enough.
No SAT or ACT is required: applicants from a U.S.-patterned curriculum may submit scores if they want them considered. Engineering is the exception to the relaxed tone, because applicants to Engineering are required to fully disclose all test scores.
Where you apply at U of T: campuses and faculties
U of T is not one admission pool: you choose a campus and a program area, and each combination has its own deadline table and, for some, its own supplemental application.
Arts & Science is offered at the St. George, Mississauga and Scarborough campuses, and Engineering, Architecture, Kinesiology and Music sit on the St. George campus. U of T lists 700 undergraduate programs across these areas. The page below only follows the programmes most applicants from abroad pick: Engineering, Computer Science and Commerce.
A good first move is to rank your three possible program areas before you read any grade requirement, because each program area counts as a separate application.
University of Toronto acceptance rate and the numbers behind it
U of T does not publish a single admit rate on the pages we checked, but the Engineering faculty publishes its funnel: for fall 2025 about four in ten international applicants (selectivity 0.42) received an offer.
For Engineering overall, 16,360 applications led to 4,500 offers and 1,422 registrations in fall 2025, a selectivity of 0.28. The international line is 4,727 applications, 1,982 offers and 464 registrations.
| Group | What the faculty reports |
|---|---|
| All first-year applicants | 16,360 applications, 4,500 offers, 1,422 registrations |
| International applicants | 4,727 applications, 1,982 offers, 464 registrations |
Grades are the other half of the picture. The mean entering average of Ontario secondary school students admitted to Engineering was 95.7% in fall 2025. That is an Ontario figure and a gate for planning, not a cut-off that applies to other systems, which are read in their own terms.
Across the university, 17,668 new full-time students entered first-entry undergraduate programs in Fall 2025-26, and international students come from 176 countries and territories.
Supplemental applications: Engineering, Computer Science and Commerce
Three of the three programmes covered here ask for more than grades: Engineering, Computer Science and Rotman Commerce each have a supplemental application with its own deadline.
All Engineering programs require the Engineering Supplemental Application (ESA), Computer Science requires a Computer Science Supplemental Application and Rotman Commerce requires its own Rotman Commerce Supplemental Application. For most other program areas, essays, reference letters and personal statements are not required.
| Programme | Deadline |
|---|---|
| Engineering (ESA) | January 15 |
| Computer Science | February 1 |
| Rotman Commerce | February 1 |
Rotman Commerce adds an early target: it recommends completing the supplemental application by December 1, 2026 so the file can be read in earlier rounds. Engineering charges a fee: an Engineering Supplemental Assessment Fee of $69.00 is paid when the application is submitted, and your OUAC ranking of U of T Engineering may be considered in the review.
University of Toronto SAT, ACT and admissions test requirements
U of T asks for no admissions test from most applicants; the SAT and ACT are optional for U.S.-patterned applicants, and Engineering wants every score you have.
Applicants who have written the SAT or ACT and want it considered may submit their scores. If you do, the institution codes are listed: SAT and AP institution code is 0982 and ACT institution code is 5366.
Engineering is stricter on information: applicants to Engineering are required to fully disclose all test scores, and Engineering applicants following the U.S.-patterned curriculum present the ACT or SAT. For AP subjects, scores of at least 4 are needed to be competitive.
University of Toronto admissions step by step for autumn 2027
For autumn 2027 entry the sequence is: apply through OUAC from late September, finish the portal tasks by the document deadline, wait for a decision round between January and May, then handle the study permit.
After you apply, a personalised list of required documents appears in the Join U of T or Engineering Applicant Portal. Most offers are conditional on the previous year's grades and in-term results.
Deadlines by faculty
| Program area | Application | Documents |
|---|---|---|
| Applied Science & Engineering | January 15 | January 15 |
| Rotman Commerce (St. George) | January 15 | February 1 |
| Arts & Science, St. George, other areas | January 15 | February 1 |
| U of T Mississauga | January 15 | February 1 |
| U of T Scarborough | January 15 | February 1 |
University of Toronto English language requirements
If English is not your first language you need an accepted test: IELTS Academic overall 6.5 with no band below 6.0, or the equivalent on TOEFL iBT, PTE, Duolingo or Cambridge, unless an exemption applies.
Applicants whose first language is not English must provide evidence of English facility unless they qualify for an exemption. Two exemptions are listed: four or more years of full-time study in a recognized Canadian school, or four or more years in an English language school in a country where the dominant language is English. The request is made after you apply, through the portal.
| Test | Minimum |
|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | Overall 6.5, no band below 6.0 |
| TOEFL iBT, new scale | Overall 4.5, 4.5 in Writing, 4.0 in Speaking |
| TOEFL iBT, earlier scale | Total 89, 22 in each of Speaking and Writing |
| PTE Academic | Overall 65, no part below 60 |
| Duolingo English Test | Overall 120, 120 in Production |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency | Overall 180, at least 170 in each component |
| CAEL | Overall 70, no part below 60 |
TOEFL scores must be achieved on a single date, and MyBest super-scoring is not used. The IELTS Indicator and the IELTS One Skill Retake are not accepted. Scores must be sent by the testing agency: only official scores sent directly by the testing agency are accepted.
A school English course does not replace a test: a senior-level English course is required for admission but does not meet the proficiency requirement. If you are otherwise admissible but short of the score, English language transition programs run on all three campuses.
University of Toronto requirements for IB, A-levels and other diplomas
IB, A-levels and the U.S. diploma are read by their own rules; every other national certificate is listed by country with its minimum credential.
International Baccalaureate
The IB Diploma with English HL or SL is the minimum, and consideration is based on predicted or final results, excluding bonus points. For maths, the Applications and Interpretations HL and Analysis and Approaches courses satisfy the Calculus prerequisite for science and business programs. The IB Career-related Programme is not accepted. Engineering adds a floor: a predicted score of at least 30 excluding ToK and EE points, with at least 4 in each prerequisite subject.
A-levels and British-patterned education
The base set is five IGCSE/GCSE/Ordinary Level subjects and three A Level subjects. BTEC, Cambridge Technical and T-Level qualifications do not replace AS or A Level subjects. For Engineering, Advanced Level Mathematics and Advanced Level Physics are needed, and grades of B or higher are recommended while a C or below in a prerequisite is not considered.
U.S. diploma, AP and the French Baccalaureate
U.S.-patterned applicants present a High School Diploma from an accredited school; for calculus, AP Calculus (AB or BC) or one semester of college calculus counts. French Baccalaureate applicants: Spécialité Mathematics in both première and terminale satisfies the Calculus prerequisite, and Engineering needs Physique-Chimie in première and terminale.
| Country | Minimum credential listed |
|---|---|
| Italy | Diploma di Superamento Dell’Esame di Stato |
| France | Baccalauréat Général |
| Poland | Swiadectwo Dojrzalosci / Matura |
| Romania | Diploma de Bacalaureat |
| Germany | Abitur / Allgemeine Hochschulreife |
| Netherlands | VWO Certificate |
| Spain | Título de Bachiller and University Entrance Exam |
| Greece | Apolytirio Geniko Lykeio |
| Brazil | Certificado de Conclusao de Ensino Medio and ENEM / Vestibular |
| Japan | Kotogakko Sotsugyo Shomeisho |
| Vietnam | Bang Tot Nghiep Trung Hoc Pho Thong |
| Indonesia | Ijazah Sekolah Menengah Atas |
| Algeria | Baccalauréat d’Enseignement Secondaire |
| Egypt | General Secondary Education Certificate |
| Saudi Arabia | General Secondary Education Certificate |
This is the minimum credential, a gate and not the level of admitted students. Türkiye is handled through the Engineering page for engineering applicants. Systems not shown here are in the High School Requirements by Country section.
What to study at the University of Toronto: Engineering, Computer Science, Commerce
The three programme groups most international applicants target are Engineering, Computer Science and Commerce, and each has its own prerequisite set and supplemental application.
Engineering needs Mathematics (including Calculus), Physics, Chemistry and English, and prerequisites must have been completed within five years of the start date. Computer Science and Commerce sit in Arts & Science on St. George: Rotman Commerce needs a calculus course such as Calculus 12, AP Calculus or another calculus course from your system.
For all of them, prerequisite courses must be presented at the senior or Grade 12 equivalent level. Other Arts & Science areas, such as the life sciences and economics, follow the general Arts & Science rules above.
Cost of study and living at the University of Toronto
International full-time tuition for the Arts & Science first-year streams, including Commerce and Computer Science, is $66,110 for 2026/27, and Engineering lists $70,060 on its own page.
On top of tuition the Arts & Science schedule lists $2,100.29 in incidental and system access fees and $948.00 for UHIP. International students buy UHIP health insurance every year. The Engineering page lists residence and meal plans from $13,645 to $37,848, and books and supplies from $1,500.
Scholarships for international students at the University of Toronto
The university cannot offer direct financial aid to international students, so scholarships are the only university money on the table, and they are competitive.
All students, including international students, are automatically considered for scholarships through admissions, but they are highly competitive and most do not cover the full cost of tuition. Overall, $55M in admission awards went to 7,100 undergraduate students.
The Pearson International Scholarships reward exceptional academics, creativity, and leadership and are the best known award for applicants from abroad. Plan the budget without any award, and treat one as a bonus.
Canadian study permit and arrival
International students generally need a study permit, and for 2027 entry the university issues a Provincial Attestation Letter once you accept your offer and pay the deposit.
You may be required to submit a Provincial Attestation Letter (PAL), which you receive after you accept the offer and pay the admission deposit. Apply for the permit as soon as the letter is in your portal.
If you want a place in residence, the deadline to apply for residence is March 31.
Who is the University of Toronto for? Summary
Toronto suits applicants who can show strong senior-year marks in the prerequisite subjects, who can pay international tuition without university aid, and who will finish a supplemental application on time.
If you aim at Engineering, check the five-year prerequisite window and plan the supplemental application and its fee. If you aim at Computer Science or Rotman Commerce, plan the February supplemental deadline and a calculus course. Everyone needs the senior English course, and non-native speakers need an accepted test.
Your next step is simple: open the OUAC application in late September, choose up to three program areas, and set a calendar line for the recommended early date and January 15.
