University of Bristol admission at a glance
Undergraduate applications to Bristol go through UCAS, and for 2027 entry the university lists 01 September 2026 as its first UCAS date; the medicine, dentistry and veterinary science deadline was 15 October 2026.
This guide covers four programmes international applicants ask about most: BSc Economics, BSc Computer Science, LLB Law and MB ChB Medicine. The typical A-level offer is A*AA for Economics, Computer Science and Law, and AAA for Medicine. English is assessed per course through language "profiles": for example, Computer Science asks for IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in all skills.
Bristol states that competition for places is very strong, and that entry requirements shown on course pages are indicative only.
How to apply to Bristol from abroad
You apply through UCAS: Bristol says you can apply for undergraduate courses through the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS), and the UCAS institution code is BRISL B78.
Bristol states that it accepts a wide range of international qualifications. Each country page tells you how your national school-leaving certificate is read, and the course page gives the typical offer in A-levels and the IB Diploma.
You do not need a GMAT: the university says no Graduate Management Admission Test is needed for any application.
Bristol UCAS deadlines for 2027 entry
For 2027 entry, Bristol lists 15 October 2026 as the deadline for medicine, dentistry and veterinary science, so the medicine, dentistry and veterinary science deadline has already passed.
For Medicine specifically, the course page repeats that the closing date for Medicine UCAS applications is 15 October, and UCAS advises that no more than four choices from a possible five are used for Medicine.
Bristol adds that it may accept applications to some courses after the equal-consideration date, and you should contact the university to check.
Typical offers: A-levels, IB and SQA
The standard A-level offer is A*AA for Economics, Computer Science and Law and AAA for Medicine; the IB Diploma offer is 38 points with 18 at Higher Level for Economics, Computer Science and Law and 36 points with 18 at Higher Level for Medicine.
These are the grades Bristol says it usually requests; an offer may differ slightly from the typical offer. They are a gate, not the level of admitted students.
BSc Economics: offer, maths and English
BSc Economics asks for A*AA including Mathematics at A-level and the IB Diploma offer is 38 points overall with 18 at Higher Level, including Mathematics with 6 at Higher Level or 7 at Standard Level (Analysis and Approaches).
Bristol states that BSc Economics is for students with a suitable A-level Mathematics qualification, or an accepted equivalent. Applicants without that background are pointed to the BA Economics instead.
The contextual offer is A-level AAB including Mathematics and the IB contextual offer is 34 points overall with 17 at Higher Level.
English: IELTS 6.5 overall with 7.0 in reading and listening, and no score below 6.0.
BSc Computer Science: offer and Mathematics
BSc Computer Science asks for A*AA including A* in Mathematics, and the IB Diploma offer is 38 points overall with 18 at Higher Level, including 7 at Higher Level in Mathematics.
The contextual A-level offer is AAB including A in Mathematics and the IB contextual offer is 34 points overall with 17 at Higher Level, including 6 at Higher Level in Mathematics.
English: IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in all skills.
LLB Law: offer and the LNAT
LLB Law asks for A*AA, the IB Diploma offer is 38 points overall with 18 at Higher Level, and applicants are required to take the LNAT.
Bristol states that it cannot offer you a place until you have taken the test, unless the test is unavailable in your country of residence.
English: IELTS 7.0 overall with 7.0 in writing and 6.5 in all other skills. For Law, no specific GCSE subjects are required.
MB ChB Medicine: offer, UCAT and interview
MB ChB Medicine asks for AAA including Chemistry and either Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics, the IB Diploma offer is 36 points overall with 18 at Higher Level, including 6, 6 at Higher Level in Chemistry and one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics, and the UCAT is required.
The contextual offers are A-level ABB including A in Chemistry and B in one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics and, in the IB, 32 points overall with 16 at Higher Level, including 6 at Higher Level in Chemistry and 5 at Higher Level in one of Biology, Physics or Mathematics.
The combined UCAT score from all subtests, with the exception of Situational Judgement, is used to select applicants for interview. For 2026 entry, the final threshold to be invited to interview was 2240 for Home applicants and 2270 for Overseas applicants, and Bristol notes that there is no cut-off score for the UCAT.
The UCAT must be taken in the same calendar year as the UCAS application. Also: work experience is not a requirement but is encouraged, and a GCSE profile applies: advanced numeracy (7 or A in GCSE Mathematics or equivalent) and standard literacy (4 or C in GCSE English or equivalent).
English: IELTS 7.5 overall with 7.0 in all skills.
School-leaving certificates from Europe
Bristol publishes country pages that give an "equivalent to AAA in A-levels" for several European certificates: 15 overall for the French Baccalauréat Général, 92 for the Italian Esame di Stato, 8 for the Spanish Bachillerato, 8 for the Dutch VWO, 1.5 for the German Abitur and 8.5 for the Romanian Baccalaureat.
| Country | Qualification | Bristol's AAA equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| France | Baccalauréat Général | overall 15 |
| Italy | Esame di Stato | overall 92 |
| Spain | Bachillerato | overall 8 |
| Netherlands | VWO | overall average 8 |
| Germany | Abitur | overall 1.5 |
| Greece | Apolytirion | overall 19.2 without additional A-levels |
| Romania | Baccalaureat | overall 8.5 |
| Poland | Matura | 75th percentile prediction, or 80th percentile across three advanced subjects |
France: the Baccalauréat Technologique is not accepted; the OIB equivalent is overall 14. Subject scores: 13 to 17/20, taken as Specialisms in the final year.
Italy: some programmes may require 8, 9 or 10/10 in individual subjects, or 13, 14 or 15/15 for mathematics in the seconda prova scritta. Spain: an A* requirement needs a 10 in that Bachillerato subject, an A needs 9 and a B needs 8. Germany: the minimum is an overall average of 2.0 and most programmes need about 1.7 or better, and for an A* equivalent 14/15 is required, for an A 13/15 and for a B 12/15 in Leistungskurse.
Netherlands: 8.5 for A*, 8 for A and 7.5 for B in subjects required at Advanced Level. Romania: an overall score between 7 and 9.5 depending on the programme, with named subjects between 6 and 9.
Certificates from Turkey, the USA, Brazil, Japan, Vietnam and the Middle East
For several countries Bristol points applicants to the IB Diploma or A-levels, while Turkey and the USA have their own routes: for the USA Bristol considers a high school diploma with a GPA of 3.2 minimum (3.4 for competitive courses) and three additional qualifications.
- USA: SAT (evidence-based reading and writing section only) with a minimum of 650
- USA: ACT with a minimum score of 28
- USA: AP Tests with a score of at least 4 (more commonly 5)
- USA: any course asking for maths must have AP Calculus BC at grade 5
Turkey: Anadolu Lisesi and Fen Lisesi diplomas with 74% to 90% average over grade 11 and 12 are considered for direct entry; Ön-Lisans Diplomasi with a GPA of 3.1 to 3.5.
Brazil: the national curriculum can be considered with three APs or three IB HL subjects; also the first year of a Brazilian university degree can be considered for first-year entry. Japan: the IB Diploma or British A-levels; the first year of a Japanese university degree.
Vietnam: the IB Diploma, French Baccalaureate or British A-levels; the first year of a Vietnamese university degree. Indonesia: IB Diploma or A-levels for direct admission. Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Algeria: IB Diploma or A-levels for direct admission. Algeria also lists the French Baccalaureate with good grades.
Saudi Arabia: IB Diploma or A-levels for direct admission. Several of these pages also say that an appropriate foundation or bridging programme can lead to entry.
English language requirements
Each course names a language "profile". If English is not your first language, the alternative to IELTS is a GCSE English Language grade: GCSE English Language grade C or 4 for Economics and Computer Science, and GCSE English Language grade B or 6 for Law and Medicine.
| Programme | IELTS | GCSE English alternative |
|---|---|---|
| BSc Economics | 6.5 overall, 7.0 in reading and listening, no score below 6.0 | GCSE English Language grade C or 4 |
| BSc Computer Science | 6.5 overall, 6.0 in all skills | GCSE English Language grade C or 4 |
| LLB Law | 7.0 overall, 7.0 in writing, 6.5 in all other skills | GCSE English Language grade B or 6 |
| MB ChB Medicine | 7.5 overall, 7.0 in all skills | GCSE English Language grade B or 6 |
Nationals of the listed English-speaking countries are generally exempt from further proof of English. Each page also names the profile, so check the profile page for the TOEFL, PTE and other tests Bristol accepts at that level.
Admissions tests and interviews
Two of the four programmes need a test: the LNAT for LLB Law and the UCAT for MB ChB Medicine.
Economics and Computer Science list no admissions test on their 2027 course pages. For Medicine, the UCAT score selects applicants for interview.
Bristol notes that it cannot offer a Law place until you have taken the LNAT, unless the test is unavailable in your country of residence.
Tuition fees for international students
International tuition for 2027 entry is £29,300 for BSc Economics, £26,500 for LLB Law, £34,700 for BSc Computer Science and £47,600 for MB ChB Medicine, in the first year.
Home fees are £10,050 for the first year on each of these courses, and the fees page confirms £10,050 for 2027/28.
Fees are subject to annual review and are liable to rise each year.
Fee increases and placement years
For a year away from Bristol (the latest published figures): international students pay 50% of the total fee on full-year study and work abroad placements and 25% on whole-year industrial placements.
How competitive is a Bristol offer?
Bristol says competition for places is very strong, and achieving a specified qualification does not guarantee an offer, so meeting the typical offer is a gate, not a guarantee.
The university publishes no acceptance rate on the pages used here. Its 2026 entry figure for Medicine is the UCAT interview threshold: 2240 for Home applicants and 2270 for Overseas applicants.
