University of Sheffield for international applicants: undergraduate entry in 2027

Applications for September 2027 go through UCAS: Sheffield takes undergraduate applications through UCAS, and the equal-consideration date is 13 January 2027. English proof is IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component or equivalent.

Overseas undergraduate tuition for 2027/28 is between £27,650 and £34,670 a year. Medicine is the exception: £51,380 a year for five years.

The university says that meeting the requirements for your course does not guarantee an offer, and it adds that the entry requirements it publishes are typical offers only.

This page covers five courses that international applicants often choose: Computer Science BSc, Economics BA, Law LLB, Mechanical Engineering BEng and Medicine MBChB. Each exists on the 2027 course pages, and the offers below are the ones printed there.

Sheffield welcomes qualifications at Level 3 or above, and it normally expects three full A Levels or accepted equivalent qualifications.

The offer you receive depends on the course. applicants from underrepresented groups may get a contextual offer one or two grades below the standard A Level requirement, and requirements for some courses may change for late applicants who apply after the January UCAS deadline.

If you do not meet the direct-entry requirement, international students can apply for an International Foundation Year at the University of Sheffield International College.

You apply through UCAS, the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service. There is no separate Sheffield application form for undergraduate courses.

Choose Sheffield as one of your UCAS choices, write your personal statement and submit before the dates in the next chapter. The English test, your qualification and any course-specific test (UCAT for Medicine) are assessed after you apply.

For courses starting in September 2027 the guaranteed equal-consideration date is 13 January 2027, and Medicine and Dentistry closed earlier, on 15 October 2026.

If you are reading this in autumn 2026 and want Medicine for 2027, the window has closed, according to the dates above. For every other course, aim to apply well before 13 January 2027.

Sheffield publishes a table that converts international qualifications into the A Level grades A*AA, AAA, AAB, ABB and BBB, and notes that some courses do not accept every qualification listed.

The table columns are A Level grades. The IB Diploma column reads 38, 36, 34, 33 and 32 points.

US applicants: AP scores of 555, 555, 554, 544 and 444 from three APs plus a pass in the US High School Graduation Diploma with a minimum GPA of 3.0 sit against the same five A Level columns.

Precise requirements vary by course. Check the course page before you decide, and use the table only as the starting point.

Sheffield lists a grade for each A Level column for the main European leaving certificates, so Polish, Italian, French, Spanish and German applicants can see the target for their diploma.

The Polish row asks for the New Matura with three Extended Level subjects at a percentile, not a single average. Italian applicants are listed by overall Esame di Stato percentage.

Each country page repeats one message: applicants with a minimum of three A Levels are considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes. The pages add the English minimum and any local exceptions.

For France, Italy, Poland and Spain the pages also say that IB Diploma holders will be considered for direct admission to undergraduate programmes.

Brazil is different: students completing the local Brazilian high school system need an approved foundation programme, such as the one at the University of Sheffield International College or NCUK, before entry onto an undergraduate degree.

Turkey has its own row in the table: a Grade 12 final-year exam average of 88%, 85%, 80%, 75% or 72% against the five A Level columns, from schools verified on MEB e-Okul.

For Romania and the Netherlands use the equivalence table above.

The standard IB offer is printed course by course and runs from 34 to 38 points for the five courses covered here, with Higher Level subjects named where they matter.

Where two figures appear they come from the same line on the course page: the first is the standard route, the second applies when the page names an Extended Essay or a Higher Level subject.

Standard A Level offers for 2027 entry run from AAB for Economics to A*AA for Mechanical Engineering.

AP applicants use the grid from the equivalence chapter: three APs plus a pass in the US High School Graduation Diploma and a minimum GPA of 3.0.

Undergraduate applicants need IELTS 6.5 with 6.0 in each component or equivalent, and some academic departments may require a higher score.

Sheffield's pages are not fully consistent. The country pages for France and Italy say IELTS 6.0 or equivalent for undergraduate study, and Indonesia and Japan carry a similar wording. Plan on IELTS 6.5 / 6.0 from the English-language page and check your course.

You do not need the score when you apply: most departments can make a conditional offer to applicants who have not yet met the English requirement.

An English test counts only if it was completed no more than two years before the start of your Sheffield course.

• PTE Academic is accepted but PTE Academic Online is not
• TOEFL iBT is accepted but the paper-based test and MyBest scores are not
• IB Standard or Higher Level English A: Language and Literature, grade 4 or above, can serve as proof
• IB Standard Level English B at grade 6 or above can serve as proof
• IB Higher Level English B at grade 5 or above can serve as proof

The exact subscores for TOEFL iBT, PTE Academic and Cambridge differ by course and are set out on the English-language page of the university.

Computer Science BSc (UCAS G402) is a three-year degree with an A Level offer of AAA or AAB with Maths.

Offer on the 2027 course page: AAA, including Maths; AAB, including A in Maths and B in Computer Science. The IB line is 36, with 6 in Higher Level Maths; 34 with Computer Science HL or a Computer Science Extended Essay.

Economics BA (UCAS L100) asks for AAB and has no Maths entry requirement.

Even without a Maths qualification the course asks for GCSE Maths grade 6/B; the first year includes maths training for students without A Level Maths. The IB line is 34; 33, with B in the Extended Essay.

Law LLB (UCAS M100) asks for AAA at A Level and 36 points, or 34 with an A in the extended essay in the IB.

Law is a three-year degree entered through UCAS like the other courses on this page.

Mechanical Engineering BEng (UCAS H302) has the highest standard offer of the five courses: A*AA.

The IB line is 38, with 6 in Higher Level Maths and at least one of Physics, Chemistry or Biology. On the four-qualification route the page lists AAA including Maths and one of Physics, Chemistry or Biology plus an A in AS or a B in A Level Further Maths.

Medicine MBChB (UCAS A100) needs AAA, the UCAT and an interview stage.

Subjects: Chemistry or Biology plus a second science, with a pass in the practical element of any science A Levels taken. Also, A Level Further Maths does not count toward the academic threshold.

The 2027-entry deadline for Medicine was 15 October 2026, so it has passed.

Overseas tuition: £51,380 a year for five years for students starting in 2027/28 (£47,575 in 2026/27).

New full-time overseas undergraduates starting in 2027/28 pay between £27,650 and £34,670 a year, except for Medicine and Dentistry.

The first-year fee is kept: the first-year tuition fee applies in each year of the course if you stay on the same course.

A placement year costs 20% of the full-time rate for students starting in 2027/28, and a year abroad costs 15%.

Sheffield charges fees depending on whether students are classed as home or overseas. Home and overseas students pay different tuition, so check your fee status early.
