Western University admission at a glance
Full-time applicants apply through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre (OUAC) and Western recommends applying by January 15 for guaranteed consideration; for the IB, a total of at least 27 is the minimum, and a first year of Computer Science for an international student is listed at $58,166.46 (draft schedule for September 2026, the latest published).
Everything on this page is according to the pages as of October 2026. Western admits by faculty, so the report follows five programs that international applicants often choose: Computer Science, Engineering, Health Sciences, Social Science and Management and Organizational Studies, with the Ivey Business route covered in its own chapter.
Western is the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario. All undergraduate students begin in the Fall semester (September), with no January admission, and one application can list up to three faculties or direct-entry programs. International high school students have two ways to start: direct admission to Western or Western International College.
Applicants outside Ontario high schools are asked for grades and documents through the Western Student Center after they apply, and Engineering adds the Casper test.
How to apply to Western from abroad
International high school students can apply directly to Western or to Western International College, and full-time applicants use the OUAC.
For direct admission, you need the admission requirements published for your curriculum or country. The page sorts requirements by curriculum (G.C.E. A-Level, IB, U.S. high school, AP) and by country, for schools that follow the national curriculum.
Documents and fees
Applicants outside Ontario receive a To Do List in the Western Student Center. every document must be in English, with notarized literal translations where needed, and final transcripts go through World Education Services (WES) Canada.
The application costs $159.00 (CAD) for 3 program choices for the first choices and $51.00 (CAD) per additional choice; non-Ontario high school applicants also pay $125.00 (CAD) as a supplemental evaluation fee.
You can apply before you graduate, using current or predicted results, and a conditional admission may be offered. Western may ask for course descriptions or syllabi to judge your courses.
Western admission requirements by program
Western sets required courses program by program: for the IB, Computer Science needs HL or SL Math and Science, Engineering needs Chemistry, Physics and Math, Health Sciences needs Biology and Math and Management and Organizational Studies needs Math.
The table gives the IB course rule of each program, according to the pages as of October 2026. The national-diploma pages repeat the same programs with subject names instead of IB course names.
| Program | IB courses | National diplomas |
|---|---|---|
| Computer Science | HL or SL Math (Any) and Science (Any) | Math and Science (Any) |
| Engineering | HL or SL Chemistry, HL or SL Physics, and Math Analysis and Approaches or HL Math Applications and Interpretation | Chemistry, Physics and Math |
| Health Sciences | Biology and Math (Any); Chemistry recommended | Biology and Math; Chemistry recommended |
| Management and Organizational Studies | HL or SL Math (Any) | Math |
| Social Science | No required courses; Math (Any) recommended | No required courses; Math (Any) recommended |
Economics modules inside Social Science are stricter: IB Math Applications (HL only) or IB Math Analysis (SL or HL) is needed for all Economics modules, and national-diploma applicants need Calculus and Pre-Calculus Math.
IB requirements for Western
Western asks for a complete IB Diploma including Theory of Knowledge and the Extended Essay, passes in at least six subjects, three at Higher Level and a minimum total grade of 27, with no mark below 4 on any course.
You can apply with predicted results and may receive a conditional offer, and for the best chance of admission you will usually need predicted results in the low to mid 30s. The final grades are sent to Western directly by the IBO Examining Board.
IB averages of admitted students
The minimum is a gate, not the level of admitted students: Western lists the averages that admitted students typically had, and usually 35 or more is needed for scholarships and the most competitive applications.
| Program | Typical IB average |
|---|---|
| Engineering | 33 - 35 |
| Computer Science | 30 - 32 |
| Health Sciences | 35 - 38 |
| Management and Organizational Studies | 30 - 33 |
| Social Science | 28 - 32 |
| Medical Sciences | 35 - 37 |
A-level requirements for Western
Western asks for a minimum average of B in 3 distinct A-Levels (or 4 distinct AS-Levels) and a C in 5 GCSE, IGCSE or Ordinary Level subjects, or equivalent.
Applicants complete the GCE A Level Predicted Results Form. For program courses, AS- or A-Level courses both count.
A published minimum is a gate: for the best chance of admission Western says you will usually need predicted results of at least BBB, and at least AAA for scholarships.
With at least a B in your A Level exams you may be able to receive transfer credit.
American system, SAT, ACT and AP
For U.S. high schools and accredited international schools, Western lists at least 4.0 full senior academic courses on the transcript and a minimum SAT of 1190 or a minimum ACT of 24.
The same page also says SAT and ACT scores are optional for fall 2027 admission, and it will not affect your application if you cannot or choose not to submit them. Western's institution codes are SAT 0984 and ACT 4837.
Program courses must be AP or senior level.
AP exams
Admission rests on your school record: AP courses taken at your high school count toward the admissions average, but Western cannot admit you on AP exams only. With at least a 4 on your AP exams you may receive transfer credit, up to two full credits.
Send AP results through the College Board; Western's Institution Code is 0984.
Requirements for national diplomas
Each country page lists the certificate Western asks for, and the country requirements apply if your school is recognized by the Ministry of Education in your country and follows the national curriculum.
Western publishes a page for each country, according to the pages as of October 2026. Every country page also asks for proof of English language proficiency if English is not your first language, and the program courses must be senior level.
| Country | Certificate |
|---|---|
| Italy | Diploma di Maturità (Esame di Stato) |
| France | Baccalauréat Général |
| Poland | Matura |
| Romania | Diploma de Bacalaureat |
| Indonesia | Ijazah SMA |
| Brazil | Certificado de Ensino Médio |
| Spain | Título de Bachillerato with EBAU/EVAU results |

Country details
- Italy. Academic transcripts (Pagelle Scolastiche) from all years of secondary education are sent directly by the school.
- Brazil. The page also lists the ENEM or a Vestibular result.
- Vietnam. the Hoc Ba results for years 10, 11 and 12, the national examination results, and a diploma sent directly by your school, not a notarized copy.
- Türkiye. a Lise Diplomasi academic transcript; the Ministry of National Education must issue the diploma, and notarized copies are not accepted.
- Japan. Your school principal, head or counsellor must certify your diploma.
Admitted students typically have the equivalent of at least a B (3.0) average in the Canadian grading scale. Western calculates your admission average from your curriculum, grading practices and grading scale interpretation.
Engineering admission and Casper
Engineering requires a test: all OUAC applicants complete Casper for the 2026/27 admissions cycle (the latest published).
Casper is an online, open-response situational judgment test of 90-110 minutes, and you can take it only once per admissions cycle. Western's IB page warns that it can take three weeks to receive results and that you cannot receive an offer without them.
No offers are given until your result is received. The last test date for Engineering is March 2, and offers can begin as early as November.
Course rules are in the requirements chapter; typical IB averages are 33 - 35. Western lists the fee for Engineering as $67,384.46 in year 1.
Ivey Business and the AEO route from high school
Ivey is not a first-year program: the Ivey Advanced Entry Opportunity (AEO) gives conditional, pre-admission status to the HBA program to exceptional high school students, and the HBA follows a 2+2 structure.
Academic profile: a low 90% average in your best Grade 12 courses, including English, plus one Grade 12 university-prep math course or provincial equivalent. Leadership counts as much: academics and leadership are weighed equally.
How to apply for the AEO
Apply to Western through the OUAC, then complete the Ivey AEO supplemental application on the Ivey website. the application includes an essay component and a video assessment, and the video interview runs on the Kira Talent platform.
AEO admission is a separate decision from admission to Western. You write two activities in essay format and up to five more in point form. The AEO deadline is January 15.
A second-entry Business year (HBA) is listed at $73,214.07 for an international student.
English language requirements for Western
If English is not your first language, you must provide proof of your proficiency in listening, speaking, writing and reading English; for fall 2027 admission you must write one of the accepted tests before March 2027.
Western does not accept scores for tests written before January 1, 2025. The key dates page gives mid-April as the last date to receive English test results. Nursing is separate: Nursing applicants have different English language requirements.
| Test | Undergraduate admission | English Boost route |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | overall 6.5, 6.0 in each section | overall 5.5 |
| TOEFL iBT, tests on or after January 21, 2026 | overall 4.5; 4.0 in reading, speaking, writing; 4.5 in listening | overall 4.0 |
| TOEFL iBT, older scale | overall 83, 20 in each section | overall 69 |
| PTE Academic | overall 58, 56 in each section | overall 39 |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced or C2 Proficiency | overall 176, 169 in each section | overall 162 |
| CAEL | overall 60, 60 in each section | overall 40 |
| Duolingo English Test | overall 115, 100 for each subscore | overall 100 |
Scores must be sent electronically: for IELTS, paper Test Report Forms are not accepted. The TOEFL code is 0984.
English test exemptions, Boost and EAP
Western can waive the English test if one of three statements is true: four years of secondary school in English, two years of an Ontario college in English or one year of university in English.
All of these must also hold: classes taught in English, academic courses, and no English as a second language courses. A waiver request does not guarantee approval; the exemption conditions do not apply to Nursing.
Outside Ontario, a waiver request needs a letter from your school on letterhead, signed by the principal or counsellor.
English Boost and EAP
If your scores are close, Western may offer the English Boost Program: a nine-week program in the summer before you start. It is offered only if you meet all other admission requirements, with no extra application. Another route is the Fanshawe College English for Academic Purposes program: the requirement is an A in Level 10.
Western deadlines and application steps for 2027 entry
The OUAC opened in late September 2026 and Western recommends applying by January 15 for guaranteed consideration; January 15 is the deadline for equal consideration to full-time undergraduate studies.
Western accepts later applications but cannot guarantee space in its programs. English test results are due by mid-April.
Steps in order
