Wageningen University admission at a glance
To start a bachelor at Wageningen University & Research from abroad, you apply in Studielink and then upload your documents in the Osiris application portal; non-EU/non-EFTA nationals have a Studielink deadline of 15 April and an Osiris deadline of 1 May, EU/EFTA nationals 15 June and 1 July. For the 2027-2028 academic year the tuition page lists € 2,771 for European students and € 18.840 (the page writes the thousands with a point) for non-EU students.
Wageningen University's route has two steps. Every applicant applies in Studielink for the bachelor's programme of their choice. Applicants without a Dutch pre-university (VWO) diploma then complete their registration in the Wageningen University application portal (Osiris), where the diploma and the subjects are assessed. The deadlines are dates the apply page gives without a year, so they repeat each cycle.
The real bar at Wageningen University is a diploma level, not a grade offer; only some country rows of the 2027 intake list add a minimum score. The international prior education page says the level of your secondary school diploma should at least be equal to the Dutch pre-university VWO level, and that besides the entry level requirements also subject requirements are applicable. Wageningen publishes the required subjects for each English-taught bachelor separately, so the same diploma can be enough for one programme and short of a subject for another.
Rules that catch international applicants out
- The non-EU/non-EFTA Studielink deadline of 15 April comes earlier than the EU/EFTA deadline of 15 June.
- Wageningen does not arrange an entry visa on predicted grades or expected graduation dates; this applies to non-EU/non-EFTA students only.
- Non-EU/non-EFTA nationals must send the certified documents named in the personal result letter by 1 July.
- The personal result letter tells you whether you meet the subject requirements or have to pass additional pre-university (VWO) exams first.
Which intake the rules belong to
Wageningen University names the 2027 intake for its diploma rules: the international prior education page links a "Diploma Equivalency List (September 2027 intake)", and the PDF is titled "Diploma Eligibility List Wageningen University 2027 intake". The tuition page gives the fee for the 2027-2028 academic year. The application deadlines carry no year: they are the dates the apply page gives each cycle.

Wageningen University rankings, history and reputation
Wageningen University & Research reports on its own rankings page that it is positioned 67th worldwide in the THE World University Rankings and 153rd in the QS World University Rankings, and 1st globally in the QS subject ranking for Agriculture & Forestry. These are Wageningen's own statements, and the rankings page does not name the edition of each table.
Wageningen University & Research leads with its subjects rather than its overall position. On the same rankings page Wageningen states that it is 2nd globally in QS Environmental Sciences, and in the ARWU subject tables 2nd in Agricultural Sciences, 3rd in Ecology and 6th in Food Science & Technology.
| Ranking | Position as reported by Wageningen |
|---|---|
| THE World University Rankings | 67th worldwide |
| QS World University Rankings | 153rd worldwide |
In the Dutch Keuzegids, Wageningen says it took second place in the Keuzegids 2026 after being ranked 1st on this list for 20 years, and that 11 of its 20 bachelor programmes were awarded 'Top Programme' status in 2026. Wageningen also states that UI GreenMetric has placed its campus first worldwide for 10 consecutive years.
History of Wageningen University
Wageningen University's history page dates the start to 1876, when the state took over the local council's Agricultural College in Wageningen. Its status as an institute of higher education was legally ratified on 9 March 1918, when it became the National Agricultural College. In 1986 it became the Agricultural University. The merger with the DLO Research Institutes began in 1997, and in 1998 the Agricultural University officially became Wageningen University.
Students and awards
Wageningen University & Research's bachelor landing page says there are 14.000 students and 120 nationalities at the university. It gives no date for the student count.
Wageningen's awards page names John van der Oost among its Spinoza Prize winners in 2018, for discovering how the CRISPR-Cas system contributes to the bacterial defence against viruses.
Wageningen University acceptance rate, selection and cohort sizes
Wageningen University & Research does not publish an acceptance rate, application numbers or offers for its bachelors, for international applicants or for any other group. What its programme pages show instead are first-year counts on six English-taught programmes, from 163 in Animal Sciences to 19 in Data Science for Global Challenges.
Wageningen's Dutch programme pages for two bachelors state that places are not capped: for Biologie the number of places is unlimited and there is "geen numerus fixus" (no numerus fixus), and for Food Technology you can apply directly, with "geen numerus fixus". These two statements belong to Biologie and Food Technology only; they are not a rule Wageningen states for every bachelor, and neither page names a year.
First-year cohorts of the English-taught bachelors
Each English-taught programme page shows a "Number of first-years" figure taken from Studiekeuze123, the Dutch study-choice database; the pages do not say which year the count belongs to. The figures show how small some cohorts are.
The Tourism (joint degree) page shows a different figure in that slot: 18 contact hours, so Wageningen gives no first-year count for that programme.
Is admission guaranteed with a listed diploma?
No. The Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake states that "(Conditional) admission is not guaranteed when your diploma is listed" and that every application will be assessed on an individual basis. The same PDF adds that it only outlines the entry-level requirements, and that additional subject and language requirements also apply. A diploma on the list gets you to the assessment; the subjects and English decide the result.
How Wageningen University evaluates bachelor applicants: VWO level, subjects, language
Wageningen University & Research admits a bachelor applicant whose secondary school diploma is at least equal to the Dutch pre-university VWO level, checked against its Diploma Equivalency List for the September 2027 intake, and then adds subject and language requirements per programme. Every application is assessed on an individual basis, and an applicant with several diplomas is assessed on only one of them, chosen by the Admissions Office.
The VWO benchmark is the core of every Wageningen decision. The apply page puts it as a rule: the general level of your previous education must be at least equal to the level of the Dutch Pre-University (VWO) diploma. The Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake translates that level into foreign diplomas, but it only outlines the entry-level requirements; additional subject and language requirements also apply.
What the evaluation in Osiris needs
Wageningen University asks for little to begin with. To start the evaluation of your credentials it only requires a recent list of marks, and it will contact you if it needs additional information. The personal result letter then tells you whether you meet the subject requirements or have to pass additional pre-university (VWO) exams to meet them. Wageningen advises applying early for that reason: if you can be admitted, it informs you about the additional requirements you still have to meet.
Incomplete curricula and diplomas not on the list
The Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake applies only to diplomas obtained after following the full curriculum. Diplomas obtained without the complete curriculum, for example after only one year of the Australian curriculum, are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. A diploma that is not listed does not automatically mean you cannot be admitted: the PDF and the international prior education page both advise you to apply so that Wageningen can assess your credentials.
Other routes: HBO and Colloquium Doctum
Wageningen University also admits applicants through a Dutch HBO propaedeutic year or HBO diploma. The HBO page lists, per bachelor's programme, the courses at pre-university level that must be completed in addition to the HBO propaedeutic. If you think courses in your HBO year should exempt you from a VWO pre-university certificate, Wageningen asks you to contact the Bachelor's Admissions Committee.
For applicants without the required diploma, Wageningen's Dutch page describes the Colloquium Doctum, an admission examination for applicants aged 21+ without the required diploma. At Wageningen it consists of passing at least 3 VWO partial certificates and meeting the English language requirement, plus the Dutch language requirement for a Dutch-taught BSc. The entry requirements themselves are set by Dutch law, the Wet op het Hoger Onderwijs en Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (WHW).
Admission tests at Wageningen: SAT, ACT, interviews and VWO subject exams
Wageningen University & Research does not name the SAT, the ACT or an interview among the requirements for its bachelors; its own admission examination, the Colloquium Doctum, is for applicants aged 21+ without the required diploma. The exams that matter are Dutch VWO subject exams: if your diploma lacks a required subject, you make it up with a VWO partial certificate, and Wageningen only accepts certificates with a score of at least 5.5 out of 10.
For US applicants the test that counts is the AP, not the SAT: the Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake asks for a United States High School Diploma plus 4 academic AP College Board exams. Wageningen's published rule for US applicants names APs, not the SAT or the ACT.
Exams that replace a missing subject
| Provider | What it offers | Language |
|---|---|---|
| CCVX | Entrance exams in Mathematics A and B, Physics, Chemistry and Biology | Not stated |
| Boswell-Bèta | Additional courses and VWO exams in Mathematics A, B and C, Physics, Chemistry and Biology | Not stated |
| VWO State exam | Central exam plus college exam; registration only between half October and 31 December | Dutch only |
| VAVO (adult education) | Separate VWO certificates at VAVO schools throughout the Netherlands | Dutch |
Wageningen University sets one score bar for all of these: it only accepts VWO certificates with at least 5.5 out of 10, and you have to register for the exams yourself. Applicants who do not hold a Dutch diploma upload and submit their VWO certificates through the Osiris application portal. The VWO State exam can only be taken in Dutch, and VAVO teaches in Dutch.
AP exams for US applicants
- You need 4 academic AP College Board exams on top of the United States High School Diploma (2027 intake list).
- All APs must be taken at the official College Board with a score of 3, 4 or 5.
- AP Studio Art, AP Capstone, AP Research and AP Seminar are named as examples of APs that are not accepted.
- Overlapping subjects, such as AP Calculus AB and BC or AP Physics 1 and 2, count as one AP exam.
- For a Turkish Lise Diploması that includes AP College Board exams, the list says the case is assessed case by case.
The Colloquium Doctum entrance examination
The Colloquium Doctum is Wageningen's admission examination for applicants aged 21+ before 1 September who do not hold the required diploma. At Wageningen it consists of passing at least 3 VWO partial certificates and meeting the English language requirement, plus the Dutch requirement for a Dutch-taught BSc. The Dutch page lists the certificates per programme: Animal Sciences needs Wiskunde A/B, Biologie and Scheikunde, while Tourism (joint degree) needs Wiskunde A/B/C plus 2 other accepted VWO partial certificates. Only one mathematics subject counts towards the accepted list.
Wageningen admissions step by step: Studielink, Osiris and the deadlines
You apply to a Wageningen University & Research bachelor in Studielink and, without a Dutch VWO diploma, finish in the Osiris application portal. The deadlines are dates the apply page gives each year, without naming a year: non-EU/non-EFTA nationals apply in Studielink by 15 April and submit in Osiris by 1 May; EU/EFTA nationals by 15 June and 1 July.
Wageningen University's process has four steps. You apply via Studielink for the bachelor of your choice. If you will not obtain a Dutch VWO diploma, you then receive an email with a link to the Osiris application portal, where you complete your registration and submit your application; without that submission Wageningen cannot start the evaluation. To start, Wageningen only requires a recent list of marks. After the evaluation you receive a personal result letter saying whether you have been (conditionally) admitted and on which conditions.
Deadlines for non-EU/non-EFTA nationals
For non-EU/non-EFTA nationals, Wageningen also starts the visa or residence permit application once documents and fees are in. The after-admission page draws the consequence for your diploma: your graduation date can therefore not be after July 15th.
Deadlines for EU/EFTA and Dutch nationals
| Step | EU/EFTA nationals | Dutch nationals |
|---|---|---|
| Studielink | 15 June | With a Dutch VWO diploma obtained after 2009: 1 August. Without a VWO diploma: 15 June |
| Osiris | 1 July | With VWO: not applicable. Without VWO: 1 July |
| Payment | 15 August | Without VWO: 15 August |
| Certified documents | 31 August on the apply page; final August 27th on the after-admission page | Without VWO: 31 August |
The two Wageningen pages disagree on the EU/EFTA document deadline. The apply page gives 31 August for EU/EFTA nationals. The after-your-application page asks for admission documents as soon as possible and before August 15th, with a final deadline of August 27th, and asks you to contact Wageningen if your graduation date falls between August 27th and August 31st. Plan for the earlier date. For payment, EU and EFTA nationals see a new task in their Studielink to-do list from May 1 onwards.
Documents you must send
- Certified documents as listed in your personal result letter: a certified copy is a hard copy with an original stamp or seal and signature of the issuing institution. A photocopy of a certified copy is not accepted.
- A certified English translation from your school or a sworn translator if your school documents are not in Dutch, English, French or German.
- A certified statement of graduation is accepted if you have graduated but do not yet have the official diploma; Wageningen will still ask to see the original diploma later.
- Submit application documents as soon as possible: the apply page says there is no need to wait until you have graduated, and waiting does not increase your chances of admission.
No visa on predicted grades
For non-EU/non-EFTA students Wageningen University starts the visa or residence permit application only after it has received your admission documents and you have paid the tuition fees. It does not arrange an entry visa based on predicted grades or expected graduation dates, and the apply page acknowledges that some students therefore cannot start in September of the current year and have to wait an additional year. If your final results come late, that rule decides your start date, not the application deadline.
Wageningen University English language requirements
For an English-taught bachelor at Wageningen University & Research you need IELTS Academic 6.0 with 6.0 for speaking, TOEFL iBT 80 with 20 for speaking, or an equivalent test, unless your diploma exempts you. Only English proficiency is required for the English-taught bachelors; the Dutch-taught bachelors need both Dutch and English.
Wageningen University's language page sets the default: in most cases you prove your English with a language test, unless you qualify for an exemption. The minimum scores below are the ones the page lists for bachelors; it names no cycle, so they are the standing rule.
| Test | Overall minimum | Speaking minimum |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS Academic | 6.0 | 6.0 |
| TOEFL iBT | 80 or 4.5 | 20 or 4.0 |
| Pearson PTE Academic | 61 | 56 |
| LanguageCert Academic | 65 | 70 |
| Cambridge B2 First | Score between 169-190 | Not listed |
| Cambridge C1 Advanced | Score between 169-210 | Not listed |
| Cambridge C2 Proficiency | Score between 180-230 | Not listed |
The TOEFL iBT row carries two scales: an overall score of 80 with 20 for speaking, or an overall score of 4.5 with 4.0 for speaking. Wageningen does not accept every version of each test. IELTS online (home edition) and IELTS One Skill Retake results are not accepted, nor are TOEFL Home Edition and MyBest scores, nor the online LanguageCert Academic Test. IELTS, TOEFL and Pearson PTE results must be taken no longer than 24 months before the day of your application.
Exempt by country of your diploma
Applicants who obtained their secondary school diploma in Australia, Ireland, Canada (except for schools in Quebec), New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States usually do not need to submit an English language test, according to Wageningen's language page. The page says "usually", not always.
Diplomas that can replace a test
Wageningen University also lists national diplomas that may replace a test if you took English as an exam subject and achieved a good score in it. The list includes the German Abitur, the Austrian Reifezeugnis, the Belgian Diploma van Secundair Onderwijs (Algemeen Secundair Onderwijs), the Hungarian Gimnaziumi Érettségi Bizonyítvány, the Slovak Vysvedčenie o Maturitnej Skúške from a Gymnázium, the Romanian Diploma de Bacalaureat obtained after 2005, the Luxembourg Diplôme de fin d'études secondaires, and the school-leaving diplomas of Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway and Sweden. The Polish secondary school diploma is not on this list.
- European Baccalaureate: English Language 1 or English Language 2.
- IB: a complete IB DP diploma with English as the sole language of instruction (except one other language course).
- IB subject scores: English A literature or English A language and literature at SL/HL at least grade 5, English B HL at least grade 6, or English B SL at least grade 7.
- Dutch diplomas: a VWO diploma with Engelse taal en literatuur; a havo diploma with Engelse taal en literatuur grade 7, or grade 6 with an HBO-P taught in English.
Dutch-taught bachelors at Wageningen and the Dutch language requirement
Alongside its English-taught programmes, Wageningen University & Research teaches the bachelors in the table below in Dutch, each a full-time 3 years programme, and for these you must prove both Dutch and English: an NT2-II diploma, a VWO certificate in Nederlandse Taal en Literatuur or a CNavT certificate, or a diploma with Dutch as an exam subject. The Dutch requirement applies only to the Dutch-taught bachelors.
Wageningen University's English programme pages for the Dutch-taught bachelors are short and send you to the Dutch site. The Biologie page says "Please note that this is a Dutch-taught programme. For more information, visit the Dutch website", and the Economie en Beleid page says the programme is fully taught in Dutch. Data Science for Global Challenges sits between the two groups: its page lists it as 3 Years, taught in English & Dutch.
| Programme | Format on the English page |
|---|---|
| Agrotechnologie | Fulltime 3 years, Dutch |
| Bedrijfs- en Consumentenwetenschappen | Fulltime 3 years, Dutch |
| Biologie | Dutch-taught programme |
| Biotechnologie | Fulltime 3 years, Dutch |
| Bos- en Natuurbeheer | Fulltime 3 years, Dutch |
| Economie en Beleid | Fully taught in Dutch |
| Internationale Ontwikkelingsstudies | Fulltime 3 years, Dutch |
| Landschapsarchitectuur en Ruimtelijke Planning | Fulltime 3 years, Dutch |
| Moleculaire Levenswetenschappen | Fulltime 3 years, Dutch |
| Plantenwetenschappen | Fulltime 3 years, Dutch |
| Voeding en Gezondheid | Full-time 3 years, Dutch |
Accepted proof of Dutch
Wageningen University's language page accepts these as proof of Dutch for a Dutch-taught bachelor: an MBO4 (Dutch taught), HAVO or VWO diploma; an NT2-II diploma; a VWO certificate 'Nederlandse Taal en Literatuur', for example via VAVO adult education or the Staatsexamen; or a CNavT certificate 'Educatief Startbekwaam' or 'Educatief Professioneel'.
International diplomas count too. In most cases you meet the Dutch requirement with a secondary school diploma equivalent to the Dutch VWO diploma on which Dutch was an exam subject. The page names the Belgian Algemeen Secundair Onderwijs with Nederlands, the VWO diploma of Suriname, the VWO diploma of Curaçao, Sint-Maarten and the BES Islands with Nederlandse Taal en Literatuur, and a complete IB DP diploma with Dutch A literature or Dutch A language and literature at SL/HL, at least grade 5.
English is required as well
A Dutch-taught bachelor at Wageningen does not drop the English requirement: the language page says you need to demonstrate both Dutch and English language proficiency. The same holds on the Colloquium Doctum route, where a Dutch-taught BSc adds the Dutch requirement to the English one.
For students who want to learn Dutch once enrolled, Wageningen's language centre runs Social Dutch courses of 15 classes of 1.5 hours each, two classes a week.
Entry requirements at Wageningen: IB, A-levels, US diploma, Abitur and EB
Wageningen University & Research publishes no grade offers: its Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake asks UK applicants for (I)GCSEs in at least 3 academic subjects plus A-levels in at least 3 academic subjects at grades A*-C (6 different subjects in total), IB applicants for the full IB DP Diploma, and US applicants for an accredited or public high school diploma plus at least 4 AP exams graded 3, 4 or 5. These are entry gates, not the level of admitted students, and the subjects per programme come on top.
The list states the minimum diploma for each country, not a target grade. Wageningen does not publish an A-level grade offer such as AAA or an IB point score; the IB row asks for the IB DP Diploma itself, with the subject requirements in appendix 2. Below the entry level, the programme's required subjects decide whether you are admitted outright or must first take extra VWO exams.
| Diploma | What the 2027 intake list requires |
|---|---|
| UK A-levels (incl. International A-levels) | (I)GCSE in at least 3 academic subjects with grades A*-C or 9-4, plus (I)GCE A-level in at least 3 academic subjects with grades A*-C; 6 different subjects in total |
| International Baccalaureate | IB DP Diploma; subject requirements in appendix 2 |
| European Baccalaureate | European Baccalaureate Certificate |
| US high school diploma | Accredited or public US high school, plus at least 4 AP exams graded 3, 4 or 5 |
| German Abitur | Zeugnis der Allgemeinen Hochschulreife; subject requirements in appendix 1 |
| French Baccalauréat | Diplôme de Baccalauréat Général or Diplôme du Baccalauréat Français International |
US high school diploma
For US applicants Wageningen University accepts a high school diploma from a public high school in the US or from one accredited by Cognia, MSA-CESS, NEASC or WASC. On top of the diploma the list asks for at least 4 AP exams graded 3, 4 or 5 by the College Board. Associate Degrees are assessed case by case. The list does not name the SAT or the ACT.
- Every AP must be taken at the official College Board with a score of 3, 4 or 5.
- AP Studio Art, AP Capstone, AP Research and AP Seminar are examples of APs that are not accepted.
- Overlapping APs, such as AP Calculus AB and BC or AP Physics 1 and 2, count as one AP exam.
Abitur, Baccalauréat and other EU diplomas
For European school-leaving certificates the 2027 intake list names the diploma, and in a few cases a minimum. Austria needs a Reifeprüfungszeugnis from an Allgemeinbildende Höhere Schule. Italy needs the Diploma di Superamento dell'Esame di Stato from a Liceo Classico, Scientifico, Linguistico or Scienze Umane. The Spanish row carries minimum scores: a Título de Bachiller plus an EVAU/EBAU/PAU with a 'nota de la fase general' of at least 4 and a 'nota de acceso a la universidad' of at least 5. Other countries are covered in the next chapter.
Rules that apply to the whole list
- (Conditional) admission is not guaranteed when your diploma is listed, and every application is assessed individually.
- The country listed is the country where the diploma was issued, not your nationality.
- The list only covers the entry level; subject and language requirements also apply.
- With several diplomas you are assessed on one, chosen by the Admissions Office.
- Diplomas without the complete curriculum are judged case by case; an unlisted diploma does not automatically mean you cannot be admitted.
- Wageningen cannot judge your eligibility from an email; the formal evaluation starts once it receives an application.
- The content is not legally binding and no rights can be derived from it; the PDF is Version 2027 - 2.
Applying to Wageningen from your country: the Diploma Eligibility List
Wageningen University & Research sets the entry level for each country in its Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake: many European rows name only the academic school-leaving diploma, some add a minimum such as a CAO score of 350 in Ireland or an ATAR of 86.00 in Australia, and for countries such as Turkey, Mexico, Ghana or Nigeria a local school diploma is only enough after at least one year of university study.
The country in the list is the country where your diploma was issued, not your nationality. The rows below are entry levels only: the subject and language requirements of your programme apply on top, and a listed diploma does not guarantee (conditional) admission.
Poland and Central and Eastern Europe
The Polish row of the 2027 intake list asks for the Świadectwo Ukończenia Liceum Ogólnokształcącego plus the Świadectwo Dojrzałości "from the Okręgowa"; no minimum score is printed in that row. Wageningen asks Czech applicants for the maturita certificate obtained at a Gymnázium, Slovak applicants for the maturita certificate obtained at a Gymnázium, Hungarian applicants for the Érettségi bizonyítvány after a Gimnázium (general/academic curriculum), Slovenian applicants for the Certificate of General Matura, and Croatian applicants for the Svjedodžba o državnoj maturi from a Gimnazija, with a Strukovna Gimnazija assessed case by case. Romania needs the Diplomă de Bacalaureat in the Theoretical Branch, Bulgaria the academic stream (profilirana gimnaziya).
| Country | Diploma and minimum |
|---|---|
| Lithuania | Brandos Atestatas from a Gimnazija or Licejus, average of at least 50 over three State Matura exams, none below 36 |
| Latvia | At least 3 subjects at Advanced Level and an average of at least 60% over Centralized State Exams |
| Estonia | Gümnaasiumi Löputunnistus plus State Examination Certificate with a GPA of at least 40 in the compulsory exam subjects |
| Portugal | Cursos Científico-Humanístico with a GPA of at least 15 plus ENES scores of at least 120 in three academic national exams |
| Greece | Apolytirio Genikou Lykeiou with a GPA of at least 15 in year C |
| Ireland | Leaving Certificate with a CAO score of at least 350 over 6 academic subjects |
| China | GPA of at least 85% in grade 12 plus a Gaokao average of at least 100 and at least 100 in Gaokao Mathematics |
| India (CBSE / CISCE) | CBSE positional grade A1, A2 or B1 in 5 subjects, or CISCE GPA of at least 75% in 5 subjects |
| Brazil | GPA of at least 8.0/10 in the final year plus an ENEM average of at least 600 |
| Australia | ATAR of at least 86.00 out of 99.95 |
| Vietnam | Graduation exam GPA of at least 8.0, English excluded |
| Japan | GPA over the last 3 years of at least 4 out of 5 |
Western, Southern and Northern Europe
For most of Western Europe the 2027 intake list names a diploma and no score. Belgium needs the Algemeen Secundair Onderwijs diploma obtained before 2025 or the Onderwijskwalificatie Niveau 4 - Doorstroomfinaliteit obtained from 2025 onwards, or the French-speaking CESS (enseignement secondaire Général). Switzerland accepts only federally recognized Maturität certificates. Denmark needs the STX, Finland the Lukion Päättötodistus plus the Matriculation Examination Certificate, Norway the Studiespecialisering profile, and Sweden the Ekonomiprogrammet, Humanistiska programmet or Naturvetenskapsprogrammet. Luxembourg needs Enseignement Secondaire Classique, with Générales assessed case by case. Italy, Spain, Austria, Germany and France are in the previous chapter.
Outside Europe and countries that need university study first
For several countries a school diploma alone does not reach the Wageningen entry level. The list asks for at least one year of an academic local bachelor programme on top of the diploma for Turkey (GPA of at least 80% or 3 out of 4), Mexico and Argentina (80%), Colombia (3.7/5.0), Ghana, Kenya and Nigeria (3 out of 4) and Saudi Arabia, and at least two years for Pakistan. Singapore applicants need GCE A-levels with three H2 and one H1 content-based subjects plus General Paper or Knowledge and Inquiry, all graded A-C; Kazakhstan needs the UNT with at least 80% or an NIS grade 12 certificate. Canadian rows apply only after at least 2 years of the provincial curriculum, and Quebec needs the DEC Préuniversitaire.
Qualifications the list does not accept
- Indian State board diplomas; the NIOS Migration Cum Transfer Certificate is assessed case by case.
- Polytechnic diplomas from Singapore.
- Higher National Diplomas (named in the Ghana row).
- Swiss cantonal maturity certificates that are not recognized at the federal level.
Required subjects per Wageningen bachelor and how to make up a missing subject
Every English-taught bachelor at Wageningen University & Research requires mathematics, and all but Tourism add one or two sciences: Animal Sciences and Marine Sciences need Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology, Earth System Sciences and Environmental Sciences need Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, and Tourism needs Mathematics only. If your diploma lacks a subject, you make it up with a VWO partial certificate scored at least 5.5 out of 10.
Wageningen University lists the mandatory subjects per programme on its international prior education page, and the Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake translates them into IB, Abitur and AP terms. Whether a subject has to be taken at a specific level, or as an additional exam, depends on your secondary school diploma.
| Programme | Mandatory subjects | IB (2027 intake) | AP (2027 intake) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Sciences | Mathematics + Chemistry + Biology | Will be published from 1 November | AP Calculus AB or BC + AP Chemistry + AP Biology + one academic AP of your choice |
| Data Science for Global Challenges | Mathematics + Biology or Chemistry or Physics | Mathematics A&I (HL) or A&A (SL/HL) + Chemistry, Biology or Physics (SL/HL) | AP Calculus AB or BC + AP Chemistry, AP Biology, AP Physics 1 & 2 or AP Physics C Mechanics + two academic APs of your choice |
| Earth System Sciences | Mathematics + Physics + Chemistry | Mathematics A&I (HL) or A&A (SL/HL) + Chemistry + Physics, one of the two on HL | AP Calculus AB or BC + AP Chemistry + AP Physics 1 & 2 or C Mechanics + one academic AP of your choice |
| Environmental Sciences | Mathematics + Physics + Chemistry | Mathematics A&I (HL) or A&A (SL/HL) + Chemistry + Physics, one of the two on HL | AP Calculus AB or BC + AP Chemistry + AP Physics 1 & 2 or C Mechanics + one academic AP of your choice |
| Food Technology | Mathematics + Chemistry + Biology or Physics | Mathematics A&I (HL) or A&A (SL/HL) + Chemistry + Biology or Physics, one of the three on HL | AP Calculus AB or BC + AP Chemistry + AP Biology, AP Physics 1 & 2 or C Mechanics + one academic AP of your choice |
| International Land and Water Management | Mathematics + Physics | Mathematics A&I (HL) or A&A (SL/HL) + Physics (SL/HL) | AP Calculus AB or BC + AP Physics 1 & 2 or C Mechanics + two academic APs of your choice |
| Marine Sciences | Mathematics + Chemistry + Biology | Mathematics A&I (HL) or A&A (SL/HL) + Chemistry + Biology, one of the two on HL | AP Calculus AB or BC + AP Chemistry + AP Biology + one academic AP of your choice |
| Tourism (joint degree) | Mathematics | Mathematics A&I (SL/HL) or A&A (SL/HL) | AP Calculus AB or BC + three academic APs of your choice |
In the IB rows, Mathematics A&I is Mathematics Applications & Interpretation and A&A is Mathematics Analysis & Approaches. For every programme except Tourism, A&I is accepted only at HL while A&A is accepted at SL or HL. The IB requirements for Animal Sciences are not yet in the 2027 intake list: the PDF says they will be published from 1 November. Until then, the published requirement for Animal Sciences is the general one: Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology.
Abitur subjects
For the German Abitur, the 2027 intake list requires the programme's subjects to be followed up to and including the last year. Animal Sciences, Food Technology and Marine Sciences also require at least one of those subjects on LK/eA level. Tourism needs only Mathematics followed to the last year. For the Dutch-taught Agrotechnologie, the Abitur row says the requirements will be published from 1 November.
Dutch VWO profiles
Applicants with a Dutch VWO diploma obtained after 2009 check their profile in Wageningen's VWO table. Some profiles are admissible as they are, others need extra subjects, and the table lists those subjects per programme and profile. For Data Science for Global Challenges, one profile in the table is marked "Not admissible". If you obtained your VWO diploma before 2010, Wageningen asks you to contact the Bachelor Admission Committee.
How to make up a missing subject
If your previous education does not yet meet the subject requirements, Wageningen University asks you to show sufficient prior knowledge of the missing subjects by obtaining one or more VWO partial certificates. Wageningen only accepts certificates with at least 5.5 out of 10, and you register for these exams yourself, through CCVX, Boswell-Bèta, the VWO State exam or VAVO (see the admission tests chapter). Your personal result letter tells you which subjects are missing.
English-taught bachelor programmes at Wageningen University
Wageningen University & Research teaches 8 English bachelor's programmes, each full-time over 3 years: Animal Sciences, Data Science for Global Challenges (taught in English & Dutch), Earth System Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Food Technology, International Land and Water Management, Marine Sciences, and Tourism, a joint degree with Breda University of Applied Sciences. The other bachelors are taught in Dutch.
Wageningen University's study abroad and exchange page says Wageningen offers 20 bachelor's programmes. The Dutch-taught bachelors are covered in their own chapter.
| Programme | Format | Mandatory subjects | First-years (Studiekeuze123) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Animal Sciences | English-taught | Mathematics + Chemistry + Biology | 163 |
| Data Science for Global Challenges | Full-time 3 Years, English & Dutch | Mathematics + Biology or Chemistry or Physics | 19 |
| Earth System Sciences | Full-time 3 years, English | Mathematics + Physics + Chemistry | No count shown |
| Environmental Sciences | Full-time 3 Years, English | Mathematics + Physics + Chemistry | 72 |
| Food Technology | Full-time 3 Years, English | Mathematics + Chemistry + Biology or Physics | 103 |
| International Land and Water Management | Full-time 3 Years, English | Mathematics + Physics | 30 |
| Marine Sciences | Fulltime 3 Years, English | Mathematics + Chemistry + Biology | 123 |
| Tourism (joint degree) | Full-time 3 years, English, Breda & Wageningen | Mathematics | Not shown; 18 contact hours |
Two naming details matter when you apply. Earth System Sciences is the former Bachelor's in Soil, Water, Atmosphere, and its page asks you to select Earth System Sciences in Studielink. Wageningen's page for Dutch VWO holders lists Animal Sciences, Environmental Sciences, Food Technology, International Land and Water Management, Marine Sciences and Tourism (joint degree) as taught in English but leaves out Earth System Sciences, which its own programme page lists as English.
What the programmes cover
The programme pages describe the content year by year rather than as credit tables. In Animal Sciences, the first year covers all subjects in animal sciences, the biology of domesticated animals, and chemistry, mathematics and statistics, and ends with an internship. Wageningen states plainly that Animal Sciences does not focus on veterinary medicine, veterinary skills, practical animal care or breeding techniques. In Food Technology, the final year is built around free electives, which you can use to deepen food technology or branch out, even at other universities or abroad. The Animal Sciences page claims that Wageningen offers more personalised guidance than many other universities; that is Wageningen's own description.
Tourism, the joint degree with BUas
Tourism is offered jointly by Breda University of Applied Sciences (BUas) and Wageningen University & Research, and is studied in Breda and Wageningen. Wageningen's page says graduates receive a joint academic degree from both institutions. Among the English-taught bachelors, it is the one whose only mandatory subject is Mathematics.
Minors, honours and study abroad
- Minors: Wageningen's minors page for 2026-2027 describes bachelor's minors as a cluster of courses of 24 ECTS, scheduled in half a year, in the first or second semester. Thematic minors are multidisciplinary; programme minors are part of Wageningen's majors and might give you admission to a master's programme.
- Study abroad: the Animal Sciences and Food Technology pages say you can also take courses at other universities, even abroad.
Career prospects: what Wageningen graduates do next
Wageningen University & Research does not publish employment rates or salaries for its bachelor graduates. What its programme pages describe instead are connecting master's programmes and the sectors graduates work in, and Student Career Services supports students and recent graduates until one year after graduation.
A Wageningen bachelor is presented as the first half of a longer path. The Food Technology page says many students pursue a master's degree after completing their bachelor's, and the Animal Sciences page notes that a master's at another university or abroad is often also possible, because the Wageningen bachelor's degree is recognised worldwide. Both are Wageningen's own descriptions.
| Programme | What the programme page says |
|---|---|
| Animal Sciences | Animal scientists find work at companies, research institutes, the public sector or non-profit organisations. Master's programmes named as a good fit: Animal Sciences, Aquaculture and Marine Resource Management, Bioinformatics, Development and Rural Innovation, Resilient Farming and Food Systems |
| Marine Sciences | Marine scientists find work all over the world |
| Food Technology | Many students pursue a master's degree after completing their bachelor's programme |
| Tourism (joint degree) | You can also pursue another master's programme at Breda University of Applied Sciences |
Student Career Services
Wageningen's Student Career Services supports students and recent graduates, until one year after graduation, in their orientation on the labour market and the move from study to career. The service runs the free WUR Career Platform, where you find a thesis, an internship or a job, and offers personal career coaching to reflect on your strengths and plan your next step.
Graduate outcomes
Wageningen University publishes no employment rate, starting salary or graduate survey for its bachelors. The programme pages name sectors and connecting masters instead. If outcomes weigh in your choice, look at the connected master's programmes as well, since the Food Technology page says many students pursue a master's degree after their bachelor's.
Tuition fees and cost of living at Wageningen: statutory vs institutional fee
For the 2027-2028 academic year, Wageningen University & Research's tuition fees page gives € 2,771 for European students (the statutory fee) and € 18.840 for non-EU students (the institutional fee, written with a thousands point on the page). For 2026-2027 the tuition page lists € 2,694 for European students and the fee summary lists € 18,300 for non-EU students.
Which fee you pay depends first on your nationality. Wageningen counts students with a nationality from NL/EEA/SME countries and Ukraine as European students; students with any other nationality are non-EU students, with the exception of students from Ukraine. The statutory fee is set by the Dutch government and applies to students who meet both the nationality and the degree requirement; the institutional fee for non-European students is set by Wageningen's Executive Board.
| Academic year | European students (statutory) | Non-EU students (institutional) |
|---|---|---|
| 2026-2027 | € 2,694 | € 18,300 |
| 2027-2028 | € 2,771 | € 18.840 |
The degree requirement is the catch for students who already studied in the Netherlands. According to Wageningen's fee summary for 2026-2027, you meet it if, at the start of your enrolment, you do not hold a bachelor's or master's degree obtained after September 1, 1991 at a Dutch institute of higher education. The same summary lists Institutional Tuition Fee 2 at € 14600 for students who fulfil the nationality requirement but not the degree requirement. Contract students pay €353 per European Credit, or €145 as Wageningen alumni.
The estimated cost of a three-year bachelor
Wageningen's study-expenses page adds a table of estimated costs. Its figures for 2027/2028 are labelled "estimate" and differ from the tuition fees page: €2,775 instead of € 2,771 for EU/EFTA students, and €18,800 instead of € 18.840 for non-EU/EFTA students. The same study-expenses page says the definite amount of the 2027-2028 tuition fees will be determined in the end of 2026. Use the tuition fees page for the fee and the table for the overall budget.
| Item | Student EU/EFTA | Student non-EU/EFTA |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition fee 2026/2027 | €2,694 | €18,300 |
| Tuition fee 2027/2028 (estimate) | €2,775 | €18,800 |
| Living expenses | €41,400 | €41,400 |
| Health insurance | €2,250 | €3,402 |
| Residence permit | n/a | €254 |
How and when you pay
European students can pay in five equal instalments. The schedule on the tuition page is the 2026-2027 one: the first debit was on 25 September 2026, and the next ones fall on 25 November 2026 and on 26 January, 25 March and 25 May 2027. The after-your-application page mentions an administration fee of €24 for paying in instalments, in its section for Dutch nationals.
Non-EU and non-EFTA students pay up front. Every admitted prospective non-EU/non-EFTA student receives an invoice after being (conditionally) admitted; the after-admission page puts the first-year invoice, which includes tuition fees, living allowance, health insurance and residence permit costs, at approximately €35,000. The study-expenses page describes a deposit of twelve months living allowance in advance. The invoice is due by 1 July.
Wageningen scholarships and funding for bachelor students
Wageningen University & Research does not publish a scholarship for international bachelor students: its scholarship page is written for master's applicants, such as the NL Scholarship of €5,000 and the WU Excellence Scholarship. For bachelors, the savings come from fee rules: students with Ukrainian nationality count as European students, and a discount applies in the 37th, 38th and 39th month of a bachelor registration.
The master's focus is explicit on Wageningen's scholarship page. The NL Scholarship is meant for talented international students from selected countries outside the EEA who wish to pursue a master's degree in the Netherlands, and the WU Excellence Scholarship, a tuition fee waiver, is tied to a complete master's application. The same page lists external funders by home country; for Indonesia it names LPDP (MSc) and BIM (BSc), and it notes that UN agencies, the European Union, the World Bank, regional development banks and private foundations fund study abroad.
| Rule or award | Who it is for | What it gives |
|---|---|---|
| NL Scholarship | Master's applicants from selected non-EEA countries | €5,000 per award, up to €15,000 |
| WU Excellence Scholarship | Master's applicants | A tuition fee waiver |
| European fee for Ukrainians | Students with Ukrainian nationality | Counted as European students, whose fee is € 2,771 in 2027-2028 |
| Fee discount | Bachelor students | A discount applies in the 37th, 38th and 39th month of their registration |
| Grant letter | Non-EU/non-EFTA nationals | A scholarship grant letter accepted by Wageningen can be submitted by 1 July instead of paying the full invoice |
Dutch student finance (DUO)
Wageningen's after-your-application page says that after submitting your enrolment request in Studielink you can apply for student finance with DUO, the Dutch student finance agency. Wageningen publishes no further eligibility detail for DUO; its fee summary for 2026-2027 refers to the groups in article 2.2 of the Study Financing Act 2000 (WSF 2000) when it describes the nationality requirement.
For a non-EU applicant, the practical consequence is that the full first-year invoice of approximately €35,000 must be covered by your own funds or by an external scholarship whose grant letter Wageningen accepts. Wageningen publishes no bachelor award that reduces that invoice.
Housing at Wageningen University
At Wageningen University & Research you look for a room through the national housing platform ROOM.nl, and in July/August and January/February you can receive priority when responding to housing offers on Roommatch.nl if your home address is over 130 km from the campus, you are unconditionally admitted and you have paid your tuition fees. Wageningen publishes no rent amounts; its study-expenses table budgets €41,400 in living expenses, as an estimate.
Wageningen University is candid about the market. Its after-your-application page says that finding a room in or near Wageningen can sometimes be challenging, that it is not always easy to find a student room in Wageningen or the surrounding area, and that the earlier you start looking, the better your chances.
How to get a room through ROOM.nl
The priority rule ties housing to the admission calendar. You must be unconditionally admitted and have paid your tuition fees, so the tuition payment comes before the housing priority. Wageningen sets the priority windows in July/August and January/February.
Other options, rent benefit and scams
- Private rooms: Wageningen advises looking in the surrounding villages, such as Bennekom, Ede, Renkum, Heelsum and Rhenen.
- Hospi Housing: no registration fee; you only pay a one-time fee if you find a room.
- Rent benefit: in some cases the Dutch government pays rent benefit, according to the housing page.
- Scams: one warning sign Wageningen names is a landlord who does not let you, or someone else, view the room or flat before you have to transfer money.
Wageningen's housing help for a new bachelor student is priority on Roommatch.nl under the conditions above, plus advice for the private market.
Student life at Wageningen University and in Wageningen
Student life at Wageningen University & Research starts with the Annual Introduction Days in August, run by and for students of Wageningen and Aeres University of Applied Sciences, followed by W'Meet U days for international students. Wageningen counts 120 nationalities among its students and describes a green campus and town where most students get around by bike.
The first weeks are organised for you. During the AID, the Introduction Days, you get to know Wageningen University & Research, your fellow students, student organisations and the city. For international students, Wageningen's arrival page adds the W'Meet U days, held in August after the AID and again in February.
Associations and sports
With its 800 members, Franciscus is one of the largest student associations in Wageningen. For sport, Sport Centre de Bongerd offers a wide range of facilities, from working out and badminton to basketball, (beach) volleyball, boxing and diving, and Wageningen University says it is happy to work with top-level athletes to balance their studies with their sport.
When study or life gets difficult, Wageningen's support and wellbeing page lists who can support, guide or advise you, starting with your study adviser.
Campus and town
Wageningen describes itself as a truly green city, and its campus as green, spacious and modern. Most students get around by bike. The weekly Wageningen Market takes place every Wednesday and Saturday at De Markt and is, in Wageningen's words, a popular tradition in the city.
Residence permit, arrival and registration in the Netherlands
If you are a non-EU/non-EFTA student, Wageningen University & Research applies for your residence permit for study, and you cannot start the procedure yourself: its Student Immigration Office begins once your tuition fees are paid and your documents are approved, sends the application to the IND around the end of May for a September start, and the process may take 4-6 weeks. Wageningen's cost table lists the residence permit at €254.
Wageningen University's study-expenses page states the rule: Wageningen has to apply for the residence permit type study for every prospective non-EU and non-EFTA student. Its entry visa page, written in the master's section, adds that the Student Immigration Office (SIO) applies for both the entry visa and the residence permit and that SIO cannot speed up the IND or the Dutch embassy.
Passport and visa rules
- Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after the start of your programme; Wageningen recommends validity until 4 months after your study ends.
- Never enter the Netherlands on a short-term or tourist C-type visa if you plan to stay longer than three months: a tourist visa cannot be changed into a residence permit.
Money, bank account and insurance
Students without a European IBAN bank account have to open a Dutch bank account, which may take a few weeks, so Wageningen advises bringing a credit card or 500 to 700 euros in cash for expenses in the first month. Non-EU students who paid the living allowance deposit need a Dutch bank account so Wageningen can refund the deposit; for other international students it is optional. Wageningen's arrival page says banks may charge a monthly fee from €0 to €4.
Health insurance differs by group. For non-EU/non-EFTA students the Student Service Centre arranges health insurance, including liability. EU/EFTA students apply for an EHIC card and consider which additional insurance they need.
Who is Wageningen University for? Summary
Wageningen University & Research suits you if you have mathematics and the sciences your programme requires, and want a bachelor in animals, food, the environment, water, the sea, data or tourism taught in English: there are 8 English bachelor's programmes, and for 2027-2028 the fee is € 2,771 for European students and € 18.840 for non-EU students. It suits you less if your diploma lacks a required science, or if the programme you want is one of the Dutch-taught ones and you do not speak Dutch.
The bar Wageningen publishes is a diploma check. Your diploma has to reach the Dutch VWO level on the Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake, your subjects have to match the programme, and your English has to meet the test or exemption rules. Even then, (conditional) admission is not guaranteed when your diploma is listed, and every application is assessed individually. Dutch-taught bachelors need both Dutch and English, and Data Science for Global Challenges can be followed in Dutch as well as English.
The English-taught programmes compared
The English-taught programmes differ most in their subjects and size. Tourism (joint degree) requires Mathematics only and International Land and Water Management Mathematics and Physics, while Animal Sciences needs Mathematics, Chemistry and Biology and Environmental Sciences Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. First-year cohorts, as Studiekeuze123 reports them on the programme pages, run from 19 in Data Science for Global Challenges to 123 in Marine Sciences and 163 in Animal Sciences.
Next steps for September 2027 entry
If you apply from outside the EU/EFTA, start early: the Studielink deadline of 15 April is the earliest application deadline, Wageningen does not arrange a visa on predicted grades, and the first-year invoice has to be settled by 1 July before the residence permit procedure can start.
Wageningen: frequently asked questions
What is the Wageningen University acceptance rate?
Wageningen University & Research does not publish an acceptance rate, application numbers or offers for its bachelors. It shows first-year counts on the programme pages instead, from 19 in Data Science for Global Challenges to 163 in Animal Sciences. A listed diploma does not guarantee (conditional) admission: every application is assessed individually.
Does Wageningen University require the SAT or ACT?
No. Wageningen does not name the SAT or the ACT among its bachelor requirements. For US applicants the Diploma Eligibility List asks for a diploma from an accredited or public US high school plus at least 4 AP exams graded 3, 4 or 5.
When is the Wageningen application deadline for September 2027 entry?
Wageningen's apply page gives standing dates that carry no year. Non-EU/non-EFTA nationals apply in Studielink by 15 April and submit their documents in the Osiris application portal by 1 May; EU/EFTA nationals by 15 June and 1 July. Non-EU/non-EFTA nationals must also pay the full first-year invoice or submit a scholarship grant letter accepted by Wageningen by 1 July.

Does Wageningen offer scholarships for international bachelor students?
Wageningen publishes no scholarship of its own for international bachelor students: its scholarship page is written for master's applicants, such as the NL Scholarship of €5,000 and the WU Excellence Scholarship. The same page lists external funders by home country and notes that UN agencies, the European Union, the World Bank and private foundations fund study abroad. Non-EU/non-EFTA nationals with such an award can submit a scholarship grant letter accepted by Wageningen by 1 July instead of paying the full invoice.
What IELTS or TOEFL score do I need for Wageningen?
The English-taught bachelors need IELTS Academic 6.0 overall with 6.0 for speaking, TOEFL iBT 80 with 20 for speaking, Pearson PTE Academic 61 or another listed test. IELTS, TOEFL and PTE results must be taken no longer than 24 months before the day of your application. Applicants with a secondary school diploma from Australia, Ireland, Canada (except Quebec), New Zealand, the United Kingdom or the United States usually do not need a test.
What A-level or IB grades do I need for Wageningen?
Wageningen publishes no grade offer such as AAA and no IB point score. Its Diploma Eligibility List for the 2027 intake asks for A-levels in at least 3 academic subjects at grades A*-C plus (I)GCSEs, 6 different subjects in total, or the full IB DP Diploma. These are entry gates, not the level of admitted students; the subjects your programme requires, such as mathematics and chemistry, come on top.
Do I need to speak Dutch to study at Wageningen?
Not for the English-taught bachelors: Wageningen teaches 8 English bachelor's programmes, and for these only English proficiency is required. The Dutch-taught bachelors, such as Biologie and Economie en Beleid, need proof of both Dutch and English, for example an NT2-II diploma. Data Science for Global Challenges is taught in English & Dutch.
How do I get a student visa and residence permit for Wageningen?
Non-EU/non-EFTA students cannot start the procedure themselves: Wageningen's Student Immigration Office applies for the entry visa and residence permit once your tuition fees are paid and your documents are approved. For a September start it sends the application to the IND around the end of May, and the process may take 4-6 weeks. Wageningen does not arrange an entry visa on predicted grades or expected graduation dates.
How do I find student housing in Wageningen?
You look for a room through the national housing platform ROOM.nl, where you create an account and pay a one-time registration fee. In July/August and January/February you can receive priority when responding to housing offers on Roommatch.nl if your home address is over 130 km from the campus, you are unconditionally admitted and you have paid your tuition fees. Wageningen says finding a room in or near Wageningen can sometimes be challenging and advises starting early and looking in surrounding villages such as Bennekom, Ede and Renkum.
