What are AP Exams and Why Should High School Students Know About Them?

If you’re planning to study in the UK, Ireland, or the USA, sooner or later you’ll come across the abbreviation AP (Advanced Placement). This is an American examination program administered by the College Board (the same organization that manages the SAT), but unlike the SAT, AP is not a single test, but rather a set of exams in specific subjects at a first-year university level.

Why is this important if you’re applying from abroad? Because universities like King’s College London, University of Edinburgh, or Trinity College Dublin require AP exams in addition to an SAT score. The SAT alone isn’t enough; you need to demonstrate subject-specific knowledge, and AP is the only widely accepted pathway besides A-Levels and the IB Diploma.

How AP Exams Work: Format and Scoring

Each AP exam is a separate subject with its own format, curriculum, and question style. You don’t take “one AP” - you take, for example, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, AP English Literature.

A typical exam lasts 2-3 hours and consists of two sections:

Section I: Multiple-choice questions. Usually 40-80 questions, graded automatically. Incorrect answers are not penalized (no negative points since the 2011 reform).

Section II: Free-response questions. Essays, problem-solving, data analysis depending on the subject. Graded by examiners (teachers and professors) during a central scoring session in June.

The final score is 1-5, where:

ScoreMeaningUniversity Equivalent
5Extremely well qualifiedA/A* at A-Levels
4Well qualifiedB at A-Levels
3QualifiedC at A-Levels
2Possibly qualifiedBelow threshold
1No recommendationNot passed

European universities typically require a 4 or 5. Oxford and Cambridge expect only a 5.

Which AP Subjects to Choose?

This depends on your chosen field of study and the universities you’re applying to. Here are the subjects most frequently required and recognized by European universities:

For Engineering and Science Programs

AP SubjectDifficulty (subjective)% of Students with Score 5 (2024)Notes
AP Calculus BCHigh~24%Most frequently required for technical fields. Covers Calculus AB material + additional topics.
AP Physics C: MechanicsHigh~25%Calculus-based. Preferred by engineering universities.
AP Physics C: E&MVery High~23%Electricity and Magnetism. Together with Mechanics, forms a complete set.
AP ChemistryHigh~14%Solid foundation for chemistry, chemical engineering, medicine.
AP Computer Science AMedium~25%Java-based. Good for CS, but not always sufficient - universities often prefer Calculus.

For Business and Economics Programs

AP SubjectDifficulty% of Students with Score 5 (2024)Notes
AP Calculus ABMedium-High~22%Sufficient for most business programs.
AP StatisticsMedium~16%Good supplementary subject, but rarely accepted independently.
AP MacroeconomicsMedium~19%Directly related to economics programs.
AP MicroeconomicsMedium~22%As above. The Macro+Micro pair is impressive.

For Humanities and Social Sciences Programs

AP SubjectDifficulty% of Students with Score 5 (2024)Notes
AP English LiteratureHigh~8%Lowest percentage of 5s, but highly valued. Analysis of literary texts.
AP English LanguageMedium-High~10%Rhetoric and argumentation. Easier than Literature.
AP European HistoryMedium-High~12%Excellent for European applications - shows interest in the continent.
AP World HistoryMedium~13%Broader perspective, but less valued than European History.
AP PsychologyMedium~18%Relatively easy, but not always accepted as an “academic” subject.

How Many AP Exams Do You Need? European University Requirements

This is a crucial question. The answer depends on the university:

UniversityRequired APsMinimum ScoreAdditional Requirements
Oxford University3-5 APs (depends on program)5 on allSAT 1450+, personal statement, interview, admission test
Cambridge University3-5 APs5 on allSAT ~1500+ (approximate, Cambridge does not provide an official cutoff), personal statement, interview, admission test
King’s College London3-5 APs4-5SAT 1350-1500, personal statement
University of Edinburgh3 APs4-5SAT ~1200-1350, personal statement
University of Bristol2-3 APs4-5SAT ~1200-1350, depends on program
Cardiff University2-3 APs4-5SAT 1250+, subject-specific requirements
University of St Andrews3 APs5SAT ~1400
Trinity College Dublin3-4 APs4-5SAT ~1300, CAO system
University College DublinDoes not require AP-SAT alone is sufficient (1000-1400)

It’s worth noting the pattern: the higher the university’s ranking, the more APs and higher scores are expected. Oxford/Cambridge represent the absolute maximum (5 on everything, no exceptions).

Conversely, universities in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, and Scandinavia generally do not require APs; the SAT alone is sufficient.

AP vs. a National School-Leaving Exam: Does One Replace the Other?

Short answer: no. AP and your national school-leaving exam (for example, the Polish Matura) are two different systems that function in parallel during the application process.

A national school-leaving certificate is recognized by many European universities (especially in the Netherlands, Germany, Italy) as equivalent to national qualifications. However, British and Irish universities often treat such certificates at a lower level than A-Levels, hence the requirement to supplement with SAT + AP.

In practice, it looks like this:

A candidate with a school-leaving certificate + SAT + AP applies on the same terms as an American with SAT + AP. The university primarily looks at the SAT score and AP scores.

A candidate with a school-leaving certificate without SAT/AP will not be considered by most UK universities, unless they have an IB Diploma or A-Levels taken at another school.

How to Prepare for AP?

This is the biggest challenge for students outside the US, as AP is not part of most national curricula and there is no infrastructure for AP courses in most schools.

Option 1: Self-study

Many students take AP exams through self-study (you learn independently from textbooks and online materials, then register for the exam at an authorized center).

Pros: flexibility, low cost, ability to prepare at your own pace.

Cons: requires enormous self-discipline, lack of teacher support, risk of poorly chosen materials.

Best self-study materials:

ResourceCostNotes
Khan Academy (khanacademy.org)FreeOfficial College Board partner. Great for Calculus, Physics, Chemistry.
AP Classroom (College Board)Free after registrationOfficial exercises, but requires a school code.
Princeton Review AP Prep Books~25-40 USD/bookSolid textbooks with practice tests.
Barron’s AP Prep~25-40 USD/bookTraditionally harder than the actual exam - good training.
Fiveable.meFree/PremiumLive reviews, notes, community.

Option 2: Online Courses

Organizations such as Johns Hopkins CTY, Stanford OHS, or Coursera offer online AP courses. Prices range from 500 to 3000 USD per course, but the quality is high.

Option 3: Tutoring or Mentoring

Individual preparation with a tutor who is familiar with the AP format. College Council offers exam preparation with experienced mentors.

Where to Take AP Exams?

This is an often overlooked but critical aspect. AP exams can only be taken at authorized exam centers, which are mainly international, IB, or AP schools. Outside the US, the number of centers in any given country is often limited.

To find a center near you, use College Board’s AP Exam Coordinators directory on collegeboard.org, which lists authorized schools worldwide.

Registration takes place through the school (AP coordinator), usually by November of the year preceding the exam. If you are not a student of that school, you must contact the coordinator and ask if they accept external candidates. Most schools allow this for an additional fee.

Important dates:

WhenWhat
September - OctoberDecide which AP subjects you will take. Begin preparations.
NovemberDeadline for AP exam registration (through the school). Late registration possible until March for an additional fee of ~40 USD.
January - AprilIntensive study. Practice tests every 2 weeks.
First - second half of MayAP exam session. Each subject has one specific date - cannot be rescheduled.
JulyResults available online. Automatically sent to designated universities.

AP and the Application Timeline: When to Do What?

A key problem: AP exams are in May, but UK (UCAS) applications close in January. How to reconcile this?

The answer: you apply with predicted grades. On UCAS, you indicate that you plan to take, for example, AP Calculus BC, AP Physics C, and AP Chemistry, and your teacher/mentor confirms your predicted grades (e.g., 5, 5, 4).

The university issues a conditional offer (they provisionally accept you, provided you achieve the declared scores on your AP exams in May). If you pass according to the prediction, the offer becomes unconditional. If not, the university may withdraw the offer or (sometimes) lower the conditions.

Practical timeline for someone planning to study in the UK from Fall 2027:

WhenAction
Summer 2025Decide on APs. Choose 3-5 subjects. Register at an exam center.
September 2025Begin preparing for SAT and AP simultaneously. Take the SAT in December 2025 or March 2026.
November 2025Register for AP exams (May 2026 session).
January 2026Submit UCAS applications. Enter predicted AP grades.
May 2026Take AP exams.
July 2026Receive AP results. University confirms offer.
September 2027Begin studies.

Note: This timeline assumes you take APs one year before starting university. If you plan to start studies in Fall 2026, you must take APs in May 2025, so the decision should be made by Fall 2024 at the latest.

How Much Does It Cost? An AP Budget

Let’s do a specific calculation for a student taking 3 AP exams through self-study:

ItemCost
3 AP exams × ~155 USD~465 USD
3 Princeton Review textbooks~100 USD
Khan Academy0 USD
SAT (for comparison)~68 USD (registration) + 43 USD (international fee) = ~111 USD
Sending scores to universities (4 universities)Free (included in exam fee)
TOTAL~676 USD

If you add tutoring (e.g., 20 lessons at ~37 USD/lesson = ~750 USD), the total budget increases to approximately ~1375-1500 USD. This is a significant amount, but still a fraction of the annual tuition fees at foreign universities.

AP vs. IB: Which is Better?

This is a common question, and there’s no single right answer.

CriterionAPIB Diploma
FormatIndividual exams (you choose how many)Full 2-year program (6 subjects + EE, TOK, CAS)
FlexibilityHigh - take 1, 3, or 7 subjectsLow - you must complete the entire package
Availability outside the USLimited (a few centers per country)Wider (IB schools in most countries)
Cost~155 USD/exam~2,500-7,500 USD/year (IB school)
Recognition in UKFull (SAT + AP = A-Levels equivalent)Full (IB Diploma = direct equivalent)
Recognition in Continental EuropeRarely required (SAT alone is sufficient)Widely recognized
Self-study optionYesNo (requires an IB school)

If you attend a mainstream national high school and do not want to change schools, AP is the only realistic option. IB requires studying at an IB school, which means changing schools (and often high tuition fees).

If you are already in an IB school, you don’t need AP. The IB Diploma is widely accepted.

Common Mistakes Students Make with AP

Based on our experience with our students, here are the most common mistakes we see:

Starting too late. AP requires 6-9 months of preparation. Students who start in February for the May session rarely achieve a 5.

Poor subject selection. Taking AP Psychology and AP Environmental Science when applying for engineering makes no sense. Universities want to see subjects relevant to your chosen field of study.

Ignoring the exam format. AP is not like a typical national school-leaving exam. The free-response section requires a specific style of answer, argumentative, with references to sources, in a highly formalized format. Learning “content” without practicing the format is a recipe for a 3 instead of a 5.

Not registering on time. The deadline is usually November. Late registration (until March) is possible, but costs more. After March, you won’t be able to take the exam that year.

Lack of predicted grades. For UCAS, you need predicted AP grades. If you’re self-studying and no one can issue predicted grades, you have a problem. Solution: a mentor or tutor who knows your progress and can write a reference.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Can I take AP without attending an AP course?

Yes. AP is an exam, not a course. You can prepare independently and register as an external candidate at an authorized center. Many international students take AP through self-study.

How many AP exams should I take?

A minimum of 2-3 for most UK universities (Bristol, Cardiff, Edinburgh). Oxford and Cambridge may require 3-5. Taking more than the university requires doesn’t hurt - it shows ambition.

Do APs count for university credits?

At many universities in the USA, yes (credit transfer). At European universities, usually not. AP is for admission, not for earning course credits.

When is the earliest I can take AP?

Theoretically at any age. In practice, most students take them in the 2nd or 3rd year of high school (equivalent to 11th/12th grade). Some ambitious students take AP Calculus AB in their 1st year, which is possible if they have a sufficient level of mathematics.

Do universities in the Netherlands/Germany/Italy require AP?

No. Continental European universities generally accept the SAT alone (without AP). AP is primarily required by universities in the United Kingdom and Ireland (Trinity College Dublin). Full list of universities accepting SAT: European Universities Accepting SAT - Complete List 2026.

Do AP scores expire?

No. AP scores are valid indefinitely. You can take AP in 2025 and use the results for an application in 2027.

Summary

AP exams are a key component of applications to British and Irish universities alongside the SAT score. Without APs, even with an SAT score of 1500, you won’t get into King’s College London or the University of Edinburgh.

For students outside the US, AP is a logistical challenge (limited number of exam centers, lack of AP courses in mainstream schools), but it is not impossible. Thousands of students worldwide take AP through self-study; if you’re applying from abroad, you should be no exception.

Start by choosing 3 subjects tailored to your field of study, register by November, and give yourself a minimum of 6 months to prepare.
