The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) is the admissions test for master’s and doctoral programmes - mainly in the United States, and increasingly in Europe and Asia too. Unlike the SAT or ACT, which are built for high-school students, the GRE measures the skills that graduate study actually demands: reading dense academic prose precisely, reasoning with quantities, and building an argument that holds up.

The test is written and administered by ETS. Since the format was shortened, the GRE exam takes just under two hours, which ended its reputation as an endurance event. Shorter is not easier, though: the same score range is decided over fewer questions, so every mistake counts for more.

What the GRE actually tests

The exam has three parts:

  • Analytical Writing - one “Analyze an Issue” task. You are given a claim and have to build and defend your own position on it.
  • Verbal Reasoning - two sections, three question types: Reading Comprehension, Text Completion (filling gaps in a passage) and Sentence Equivalence (two words that give a sentence the same meaning). It is a test of vocabulary precision and sentence logic, not of grammar rules.
  • Quantitative Reasoning - two sections covering arithmetic, algebra, geometry and data analysis, using Quantitative Comparison items, multiple choice, Numeric Entry and chart interpretation. The mathematical content is roughly secondary-school level; the difficulty comes from how the questions are framed.

The GRE is section-level adaptive. Your performance on the first Verbal section sets the difficulty of the second, and Quant works the same way. That is a tactical fact worth knowing: the first section of each type deserves your sharpest attention.

How the score works

Verbal and Quant are each reported on a 130-170 scale, combining into 260-340. Analytical Writing is reported separately on a 0-6 scale in half-point steps. Departments usually look first at the section that matters for the field - Quant for engineering, economics and the sciences, Verbal for humanities and law-adjacent programmes - and only then at the total.

There is no universal “good score”. The only meaningful benchmark is the programme you are applying to; many departments publish the median scores of admitted applicants. GRE scores stay valid for five years, so you can take the test early and reuse the result.

Who needs the GRE in 2026

After the wave of test-optional policies in 2020-2022, the picture is mixed. Some programmes reinstated the GRE requirement, some kept it optional, and some dropped it permanently. This cannot be guessed - check the admissions page of each specific programme for the intake you are targeting. Two things are worth remembering: under a test-optional policy a strong score still helps you, and many business schools accept the GRE in place of the GMAT.

Take the GRE sample test

The GRE practice test below works like the real thing in miniature: pick a section (Verbal, Quantitative or both) and how long you want to sit, and we scale the number of questions to your time. At the end you get an estimated score on the 260-340 scale, broken down by section.

How to read your result

This is an estimate, not an official score. A short sample cannot reproduce the adaptive machinery of the real exam or the pressure of two unbroken hours. Treat the number as a starting point: what it shows reliably is which section lags behind, and where your accuracy starts to break down as the pace picks up.

If the gap between sections is wide, your study plan writes itself - the weaker half returns more points per hour invested. If both came out level, work on pacing and on the specific question types that keep catching you out.

Questions people actually ask

How long is the GRE?
The shortened GRE General Test runs about 1 hour and 58 minutes. It contains one Analytical Writing task, two Verbal Reasoning sections and two Quantitative Reasoning sections. The old unscored section and the second essay are gone.
How is the GRE scored?
Verbal Reasoning and Quantitative Reasoning are each scored from 130 to 170 in 1-point increments, giving a combined 260-340. Analytical Writing is reported separately on a 0-6 scale in half-point steps and is not part of the combined score.
Is the GRE adaptive?
Yes, but at section level rather than question level. How you perform on the first Verbal section determines the difficulty of the second, and the same applies to Quant. That makes the first section of each type the one that carries the most weight.
How long are GRE scores valid?
GRE scores are valid for five years from the test date. That is longer than most language certificates, so you can sit the GRE well before the rest of your application is ready.
Can you use a calculator on the GRE?
An on-screen calculator is built into the testing platform for the Quantitative sections. You cannot bring your own. The questions are designed to reward reasoning and estimation rather than heavy arithmetic.
